Year: 2017 Category: Drama. Director: Valeska Grisebach. Cast: Meinhard Neumann, Reinhardt Wetrek, Waldemar Zang, Detlef Schaich.

    Plot

A group of Germans arrives at an isolated village in Bulgaria to build a hydroelectric plant, but the town still resented by the German invasion in the Second World War and it is almost impossible for them to communicate effectively with the inhabitants due to the difference of languages.

    Opinion

The film basically follows the Meinhard story, a man who is part of a group of workers of German origin working in the construction of a hydroelectric plant in Bulgaria, specifically on the border with Greece. There he begins to develop a relationship with the inhabitants of a small town even though they do not speak the same language. Slowly and incredibly realistic the film shows the evolution of the character and with great precision transports the viewer to the events that the director wishes to narrate.

The performances are fine, the film does not involve famous actors, but the fact that they are unknown faces increases the realism of the film and makes everything much more organic, getting a very polished result that otherwise would have been impossible. In fact, the main character has the same name as the actor, Meinhard, in such a way that everything is quite natural in the film and in the story that is narrated, getting the viewer to have the feeling that what he sees is a almost documentary film.

As far as I'm concerned, the problem with the film is that its development is very slow and heavy, which helps the director to convey what she wants, but for most of the audience is not very entertaining, some moments were very boring, so I paused the movie three times to take a break. Another important factor is also in the language, since it is not a film in English, but luckily the characters have difficulty communicating so reading a bit of subtitles is not bad.

I really do not want to make a negative review of the film because it is very well done, and transmits very well the emotions and ideas of the director, the main problem is that the pace of the film is not for all types of audiences, since the film and the narrated story is very slow and I expected something with faster transitions. However, I am sure that for the indicated viewer the film can be a great movie.

    Score

    7/10

A film technically well done, low budget, but an excellent job of the director and screenwriter Valeska Grisebach, and the actors, however, I would not see it again, the plot develops too slowly and bored me. However, I give it a score of 7 because I feel that the film managed to convey something to me, I feel that the experience that the main character has in the film is in a certain way my experience too.
