What We Hide

There are movies that shout their tension with explosions or a certain kind of visible horror but this one whispers it through silence, secrets and the heavy weight of loss two young sisters are forced to carry.

What it’s about

Spider (Mckenna Grace) and Jessie (Jojo Regina) are two sisters suddenly orphaned when their mother dies from an overdose. They fear that once the world finds out, they’ll be torn apart by the foster care system which they refer to as ‘baby snatchers’.

So Spider takes on more than any child should. She hides their mother’s death and tries to keep up appearances with school, food, bills, plus dealing with their mother’s drug dealer who shows up demanding answers. All the while, a sheriff who’s a family friend hovers in the wings.

What hit me / What worked

The sisterly bond is powerful. The contrast between Spider (tougher, trying to be in control) and Jessie (younger, holding onto hope and memory) is heartbreaking and very real. I admired how they leaned on each other, protected each other, and messed up together. That felt authentic.

I also love how Spider stays young in some parts. She takes on adult burdens, yes, but the film doesn’t force her to become some hardened gangster type. You see her still as a kid. There’s the flashes of fear, confusion and desire for normal whenever she’s with Jessie, or when she interacts with Cody (a crush / friend). That part gave the movie its emotional weight.

Also, about the emotions and stakes, the tension isn’t non-stop action; it’s quiet, heavy.

You’ll find yourself asking questions like, Will they be discovered? Will they starve? Will their mother’s dealer use her death for leverage? Those threats loom. Even simple scenes (school, trying to talk to friends, hiding their mom’s absence) feel loaded. I found myself rooting for them not just because of what they’re doing, but because I felt how much was on them.

Anyway, some plot beats felt predictable. You can see from early on where certain confrontations will happen. The suspense is there, but often you’re just waiting for the obvious.

Also, the backdrop (drug crisis, foster care, etc.) felt more used as “the problem” than deeply explored. The systemic issues are visible but not always fleshed out. Sometimes the film leans more into emotional scenes than examining why things are the way they are.

Now the question I keep asking myself each time I come across a plot as this is, if orphaned kids dread being ‘thrown’ in foster homes, why do the system keep forcing them there? Thought there was something called freedom and it should include these kids having to live in the homes they grew up in and maybe if the system is generous enough, they could send agents whose duty will be to check in on them every now and then till they’re of age?

As for the setting and atmosphere, they are good, but not always immersive. Some scenes are polished, maybe too polished. The tension would’ve been stronger if more of the setting felt harsher, more of the worn down, less tidy.

All in all, I rooted for Spider and Jessie. I didn’t want them separated against their will and I rooted because the movie doesn’t make them superheroes but it makes them human. Spider makes bad/good choices, often under pressure, often scared. Jessie doesn’t always understand, but she feels. And that blend of fear, love, responsibility and hope, it holds you. The film reminds you that sometimes “doing a perceived wrong thing” comes from trying to protect what matters most.

Overall, this film is not just “another tragedy story.” It finds its power in small moments. The shared meals, their little attempts at pretending things are normal, the burden of silence, the way young people try to keep hope alive even when everything seems to say no. It could’ve pushed harder in tension or creativity, but its heart is in the right place.

PS: If you like emotionally driven dramas about family, especially sibling dynamics under pressure you should watch this. Also, if you don’t need constant action but prefer slow-burn stories that build tension quietly and if you’ve ever grappled with loss, or know someone who has, this will resonate.

But, if you prefer thrillers with big twists, heavy doom, or fully rugged settings, this one might feel a bit lighter than expected.
