I'm really surprised with these mini-drama series that HBO has been producing about extremely intense real events that allow us to explore crimes and scandals in a detailed way, because each one is made in an impartial way with testimonies and real material that gives us that overwhelming feeling that many times the truth can have more than one version. I say this because a few days ago I saw a documentary that enchanted me and that once again showed me that the truth is able to adopt different positions depending on who applies it and above all who is involved in a crime where it is easier to investigate the obvious than the right.

[Themoviedb](https://www.themoviedb.org/tv/91514-who-killed-garrett-phillips?language=en-US) # Who Killed Garrett Phillips? is a series that allows us to explore in great detail the investigation and subsequent judicial process behind the death of a child in strange circumstances, or rather circumstances that the police and the media distorted and became strange. Throughout the series, we see how a child was killed while alone in his home, a crime without so much evidence and which caused more commotion for the investigative process that came later than for the crime itself. What I mean is that in this series the really shocking thing is not the crime because there is not so much emphasis on it, but on the investigation of a suspect who arose almost spontaneously, with no evidence to really blame him, basically a man who was accused only for how convenient it was for the police and for some people directly involved with the investigation.

The whole plot of the series allows us to see how after the murder of the child while he was at home, an investigation is started that really doesn't lead to anything and is quickly put aside by the police, all to focus on somehow incriminating the ex-boyfriend of the child's mother through an accusation that arises from a "testimony" given by another ex-boyfriend of the child's mother; yes basically the main suspect that the police decide to investigate is a man accused by another man who hates him, I know, it doesn't make sense.

[Decider](https://decider.com/2019/07/23/who-killed-garrett-phillips-hbo-review/) # What is really interesting and overwhelming about this documentary is to see how the police and the local media started a witch hunt to ruin the man who was accused of a crime he didn't commit, a man who besides being accused for the convenience of another man was also African-American, something that makes the story more intense because we see how at every opportunity this man's rights are undermined and violated to make him go through all kinds of humiliations that make him break and make some mistake that allows the police to have something concrete to put him in jail.

The series has no waste, it is built through real and raw testimonies that allow the plot to establish a tense and suspenseful atmosphere where we are waiting to see if this man was really accused or if he really had something to do with the murder of the child. It's wonderful to see how the police corrupt themselves by erroneously conducting a murder investigation, police that decide to take the easy way and target only a circumstantial suspect instead of focusing on the facts and the few pieces of evidence they could collect to try to find the real killer. The series has a lot of dramatic moments that make it an ode to the investigation because the creators not only kept what the police and those involved decided to tell but instead focuses on exposing each theory created by the police in a very detailed and simple way that allows us to see the whole social panorama behind such a horrendous crime.

Without a doubt this is another great success of HBO, the whole series is perfectly developed so that we are interested in knowing the truth and in knowing how everything ended for those involved, all the atmosphere they managed to create through testimonies, recordings and photos is incredible because it transports us to those classic films of suspense and investigation where we never knew what was going to happen. Finally, I highly recommend that you watch this series because in addition to being super entertaining has a very prominent social component

Últimamente me he vuelto adicta a los documentales de investigación y a las series de mini-dramas de HBO, todo por lo bien construidos que están, donde tratan de mostrar los hechos para que nosotros como espectadores podamos tener acceso a diferentes versiones de los eventos. También porque están narradas de una manera cronológicamente perfecta, cruzando caminos fáciles de recorrer por complicadas que sean las historias.

Este mini-documental me atrapó mucho por la gravedad de los hechos que trata, después de todo el asesinato de un niño de 12 años es algo horrendo y más si se intensifica con un alto grado de racismo donde la policía y toda la gente culpa a un hombre sólo por su color de piel.

Para darle un poco de contexto es necesario establecer que el crimen tuvo lugar en una ciudad a las afueras de Nueva York, un pueblo donde la gran mayoría de la población es blanca y donde una de las cosas más relevantes es una universidad. Los creadores del documental hacen un trabajo fantástico entrando de lleno en la trama mostrándonos las suposiciones de cómo ocurrió el crimen. Un crimen que más que elevar la relevancia en el asesinato del niño, aumenta la intensidad en la población cuando se supone casi inmediatamente que el asesino es el ex-novio de la madre del niño, un hombre humilde y común, pero uno de los pocos hombres negros en la ciudad.

Básicamente, la historia se desarrolla como consecuencia del asesinato del niño, pero dejando esa cuestión en segundo plano y centrándose más en la búsqueda de la verdad y la situación del único acusado que es tratado como culpable incluso antes de ser juzgado.

El crimen del niño representa algo horrendo, pero no se acerca en nada al horrendo trabajo de la policía, que guiada por el falso testimonio y las falsas acusaciones de un policía que estaba relacionado con la madre del niño, pone en el punto de mira de la policía a un hombre negro que nunca debió haber estado involucrado en algo tan serio como el asesinato de un niño.

Un hombre cuyo único pecado fue haber sido el novio de la madre del niño asesinado y que por ello es llevado al centro de un crimen que destruye su vida y lo expone a todo tipo de humillaciones, abusos y críticas guiado por un sentido de racismo y xenofobia policial super latente a lo largo del documental. Un hombre que ve todos sus derechos violados y sometidos al escrutinio público por un sistema policial que lo acusa sin ninguna prueba en su contra, utilizando cientos de suposiciones como punto de partida para juzgarlo e ir tras él.

A lo largo del documental vemos cómo la policía sólo se centra en el hombre negro, olvidando los procesos correspondientes y necesarios para investigar un asesinato. Es increíble ver cómo los agentes de policía llevan a cabo una vergonzosa persecución del acusado, dejándolo sin intimidad y sometiéndolo constantemente a humillaciones como cuando lo desnudan sin necesidad para buscar algún tipo de marca o cicatriz que puedan usar en su contra.

Nunca hay una verdadera búsqueda de la verdad, la policía lleva a cabo una especie de caceria de brujas en la que hace lo imposible para encontrar formas de culpar al acusado, tratando de manipular testimonios y pruebas guiados por suposiciones que carecen de fuerza para culpar al hombre.

Un documental que nos muestra que a veces la verdad va más allá de lo que es correcto y suele basarse en los conceptos que la sociedad ha elaborado a partir de ti.

Recomiendo este mini documental porque nos permitirá ver un proceso de investigación dañado y manchado por un hombre que trata de manipular todo para culpar a Nick Hillary por un asesinato que no cometió.

Lately I have become addicted to HBO's investigative documentaries and mini-drama series, all because of how well constructed they are where they try to show the facts so that we as viewers can have access to different versions of the events. Also because they are narrated in a chronologically perfect way, crossing paths easy to travel no matter how complicated the stories are.

This mini-documentary trapped me a lot by the severity of the events it deals with, after all the murder of a 12-year-old boy is something horrendous and more if it is intensified with a high degree of racism where the police and all the people blame a man just because of his skin color.

To give you some context it is necessary to establish that the crime took place in a town outside of New York, a town where the great majority of the population is white and where one of the most relevant things is a university. The creators of the documentary do a fantastic job entering fully into the plot showing us the assumptions of how the crime happened. A crime that more than raising relevance for the murder of the child raises intensity in the population when it is supposed almost immediately that the killer is the ex-boyfriend of the child's mother, a humble and common man but one of the few black men in town.

Basically the story develops as a consequence of the murder of the child, leaving that issue in the background and focusing more on the search for the truth and the situation of the only accused who is treated as guilty even before being judged.

The crime of the child represents something horrendous, but comes nowhere near the horrendous work done by the police, which guided by the false testimony and the false allegations of a policeman who was related to the child's mother, puts in the police spotlight a black man who should never have been involved in something as serious as murder.

A man whose only sin was to have been the boyfriend of the mother of the murdered child and who because of that is taken to the center of a crime that destroys his life and exposes him to all kinds of humiliations, abuses and criticisms guided by a sense of racism and super latent police xenophobia throughout the documentary. A man who sees all of his rights violated and subjected to public scrutiny by a police system that accuses him without any evidence against him, using hundreds of assumptions as starting points to judge him and go after him.

Throughout the documentary we see how the police only focus on the black man, forgetting the corresponding and necessary processes to investigate a murder. It is incredible to see how police officers carry out a shameful prosecution of the accused man, leaving him without intimacy and constantly subjecting him to humiliations such as when they make him undress without need only to look for some kind of mark or scar they can use against him.

There is never a true search for truth, the police conduct a kind of witch hunt where they do the impossible to find ways to blame the defendant, trying to manipulate testimonies and evidence guided by assumptions that lack strength to blame man.

This is another notable criticism to the US justice system, and the way some people are treated just because of their skin color. A documentary that shows us that sometimes the truth goes beyond what is right and is usually based on the concepts that society has elaborated from you.

I highly recommend this mini documentary because it will let us see an investigative process damaged and stained by a man who tries to manipulate everything to blame Nick Hillary for a murder he didn't commit.
