English Version
Among my favorite films are those based on true events, biographies, and dramas that provoke thought. One such film is Wildflower, a comedy-drama that tells the story of Bea Johnson, the daughter of neurodivergent parents.
Inspired by a true story—and based on a documentary also created by director Matt Smukler—the film follows Bea’s early years, from birth through adolescence, as she finds herself having to take care of both herself and her parents from a very young age.
Although some of their relatives disapproved of the relationship between Bea’s parents due to their intellectual disabilities, the couple built a family, defying all expectations.
Interestingly, the film originated when the director decided to record a video about his niece—who was caring for her neurodivergent parents—to help her apply for a university scholarship.
Beyond being an inspiring story, the drama raises questions about the extent to which one should intervene in the lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities, and highlights what they are truly capable of, despite their challenges.
Ultimately, it also prompts us to question the very concept of "normality" and the established standards for family life, as well as who gets to decide what should—or should not—be tolerated.
