Looking for entertainment at the movies, just because of the title of a movie, was very misguided on my part. I understand that there are movies that are not what you expect, but this was too low. I really expected a better horror story in this movie based on one of the most famous houses in the United States, where you can cover a lot of things and here, unfortunately it was not done.

Buscar entretenimiento en el cine, solo por el título de una película, fue algo muy errado de mi parte. Entiendo que hayan películas que no son lo que uno espera, pero esto fue demasiado bajo. La verdad esperaba una mejor historia dentro del terror en esta película basada en una de las casas más famosas de Estados Unidos, donde se pueden abarcar muchas cosas y aquí, lamentablemente no se hizo.

Winchester is an Australian-American psychological horror film, released in 2018. It was directed by the Spierig brothers and written by the Spierig brothers along with Tom Vaughan. It was produced by Bullitt Entertainment, Blacklab Entertainment, Diamond Pictures, Imagination Design Works and distributed by Lionsgate, CBS Films. It was made with a budget of $3,500,000 grossing a total of $44,378,040. It starred Helen Mirren, Jason Clarke, Sarah Snook and Angus Sampson. The cinematography was done by Ben Nott, the music by one of the brother directors; Peter Spierig and the special effects were done by Matt Villa.

Plot of the film
The story is centered on Winchester Mansion, specifically during the time it was built. The Winchester Arms Company is concerned about the mental health of Mrs. Sarah Winchester (Helen Mirren), the company's co-owner, who has taken great pains to build an endless house by making it longer and longer because of "spirits" that supposedly compel her to do so. To corroborate the state of Mrs. Winchester's mental health and whether she is still fit to run the company, the company's top executives hire Dr. Eric Price (Jason Clarke), an indebted psychologist who accepts the job and travels to the extraordinary mansion.
There he meets Mrs. Winchester's niece Marian Marriott and her son Henry, who have witnessed the strange happenings inside the impressive house. Soon, Dr. Price is stranded on a thin line between reality and illusion, and must make the right decision to stop the curse that fell on the Winchester family.

The Winchester Mansion actually exists and is a tourist site located in San Jose, California, United States. It was the residence of Sarah Winchester, an intelligent woman and a self-taught architect. She inherited a large fortune in 1881 after the death of her husband, the magnate inventor of the repeating rifle William Wirt Winchester. Mrs. Winchester used her large fortune to build her impressive house, which was endowed with 160 rooms, 40 bedrooms, 467 doors, 6 kitchens, 52 skylights, 2 ballrooms (one unfinished), 47 fireplaces, 17 chimneys, over 10,000 panes of glass, 2 basements, three elevators and gas lamps that lit at the touch of a button. The house, although very large, only had one shower and two mirrors.
Initially the house had only 8 rooms until it was extended into a 7-story structure, but after the earthquake that hit California in 1906, the top three floors were collapsed so they had to remodel the house leaving it with only 4 floors.
According to legend, Sarah Winchester said that she was cursed by all the spirits of people who were killed by the rifles made by her company. Mrs. Winchester, tormented and on the advice of a medium, began the construction of her unfinished house, so that the spirits would be lost among the labyrinthine corridors of the Mansion. Construction ceased with Mrs. Winchester's death on September 5, 1932.
La Mansión Winchester existe en realidad y es un sitio turístico que se encuentra ubicado en San José, California, Estados Unidos. Fue la residencia de Sarah Winchester, una mujer inteligente y una arquitecta autodidacta. Heredó una gran fortuna en 1881 después de la muerte de su marido, el magnate inventor del rifle de repetición William Wirt Winchester. La señora Winchester usó su gran fortuna para construir su impresionante casa, la cual estaba dotada de 160 cuartos, 40 habitaciones, 467 puertas, 6 cocinas, 52 tragaluces, 2 salones de baile (uno sin terminar), 47 hogueras, 17 chimeneas, más de 10.000 paneles de cristal, 2 sótanos, tres ascensores y lámparas de gas que encendían con solo un botón. La casa, a pesar de ser muy grande, solo contaba con una ducha y dos espejos.
Inicialmente la casa solo contaba con 8 habitaciones hasta que fue extendiéndose en una estructura de 7 pisos, pero después del terremoto que azotó a California en 1906, los tres pisos superiores fueron derrumbados por lo que tuvieron que remodelar la casa dejándola solo con solo 4 pisos.
Según la leyenda, Sarah Winchester decía que estaba maldita por todos los espíritus de personas que fueron asesinadas por los rifles hechos por su compañía. La señora Winchester, atormentada y por consejo de una médium, comenzó la construcción de su casa sin terminar, para que los espíritus se perdieran entre los laberínticos pasillos de la Mansión. La construcción dejó de llevarse a cabo con la muerte de la señora Winchester el 5 de septiembre de 1932.
The history and the reason behind the construction of that mansion are quite interesting, in fact, today the house is used as a museum for all those who want to know the place from the inside, however, I can't say the same about the movie. First of all, we have some weak horror scenes that do not come to the end of the movie. The plot is rather predictable, not to mention that its editing seems to be poorly crafted. I can't complain about the performance of the actors, especially one of them (and I'm talking about Helen Mirren) who has a great acting experience and a high caliber of recognition, it was too much to find herself in the cast of this psychological horror bodice-ripper.
The film is rather dull, considering that it is based on one of the most famous urban legends in the United States, it seems that the Spierig brothers' forte is not horror, not to mention their attempts to add a bit of humor to the film, rather clumsy attempts in my opinion. No wonder the film received very bad reviews, rating it below average which is the most acceptable level you can get from a feature film that has been more or less decent.
They could have made the most of it or approached the story in a different way, using the already characteristic elements they possessed, but quite the opposite, all they have left us with is a lazy horror that instead of making an impression on us makes us scoff. I won't be randomly searching for movies on Netflix again, I give it a 3.5/10 rating still slightly annoyed that it wasted my time.
La historia y el motivo que impulsó la construcción de aquella mansión son bastante interesantes, de hecho, hoy en día la casa es usada como museo para todos aquellos que quieran conocer el lugar por dentro, sin embargo, no puedo decir lo mismo de la película. En primer lugar, tenemos unas escenas de terror flojo que no vienen al cabo dentro de la película. La trama es bastante predecible, sin mencionar que su montaje parece estar mal elaborado. No puedo quejarme de la interpretación de los actores, especialmente el de uno de ellos (y me refiero a Helen Mirren) la cual posee una gran experiencia actoral y un reconocimiento de gran calibre, era demasiado para encontrarse dentro del reparto de este bodrio del terror psicológico.
La película es bastante aburrida, tomando en cuenta que está basada en una de las leyendas urbanas más famosas dentro de los Estados Unidos, parece que el fuerte de los hermanos Spierig no es el terror, eso sin mencionar sus intentos de agregar un poco de humor dentro de la película, intentos bastante torpes a mi parecer. No me extrañó que la película haya recibido muy malas críticas, calificándola por debajo del promedio que es el nivel más aceptable que se puede conseguir de un largometraje que haya sido más o menos decente.
Pudieron sacarle provecho o abordar la historia de otra manera, utilizando los elementos ya característicos que poseían, pero todo lo contrario, todo lo que nos han dejado es un terror perezoso que en vez de causarnos impresión nos provoca burla. No volveré a buscar películas por Netflix al azar, le doy una calificación de 3.5/10 aún poco molesto por haberme hecho perder el tiempo.
