  1. Wind River... It is a serious matter@musicandreview768d

Greetings to the biggest movie community of the Hive Blockchain, it's a pleasure to post here again. Today I want to share with you a review of a movie that already has several years of having been released, but from my point of view it will age very well taking into account the subject matter and the realities it tries to make known, in addition, it was filmed quite well and has a scenery and photography that has nothing to envy to the most successful and current films

Wind River is a thriller based on real events released in 2017 that stars Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen, a duo that we recognize perfectly for being part of the cast of the Marvel Universe. It was directed by Taylor Sheridan, a director unknown to me who actually surprised me a lot with a story that few dare to explore cinematically taking into account the bloody reality that is exposed there.

The film takes us to a remote area of Wyoming (USA), snow, cold and low temperatures are the constant even in the summer. In this area live mostly Native Americans who manage to subsist in an extreme environment where there is a lot of work to do, but little fun or recreation. And well, as is common, cold towns tend to be depressing and heavy, there is no doubt that constantly seeing a gray sky can affect our moods and our minds.

So it is that Cory (Jeremy Renner), a skilled hunter in the area is found in the mountains with the body of a young woman with Native American features to which he seems to recognize immediately, he informs the authorities and from there begins an investigation that will soon reveal a very dark part of what it takes to live in a place like that. There is little or nothing the local police can do in situations like these as they do not have the resources to carry out a thorough investigation, so they request the support of the FBI and that is where Jane (Elizabeth Olsen) makes her appearance.

Little by little Jane starts to understand how complicated it is to work in a place like this where people seem to hate white people, besides, she has to deal with the attitude of people who are clearly affected by living in such a difficult place. Everything seems to get out of hand for Jane who bravely faces complex challenges, but she did not count on the fact that Cory, who knows the people and every corner of the mountains very well, is already several steps ahead in the investigation.

    Wind River Trailer #1 (2017)

For the moment I will not tell you more spoilers, but I can assure you that what is progressively revealed teaches us that there is much to be corrected in the world, there are still countries where indigenous natives are not taken seriously or not respected, being these relegated from society and forgotten by the authorities in terms of attention. It is sad to see how human nature somehow tries to take advantage of the weaknesses or vulnerabilities of others when it feels it has some advantage or power.

The film perfectly captures a reality that is difficult to see, that is not broadcast at all and that many do not seem to care about, but these are things that are slowly eating away at a society that is far from being healthy and inclusive.

Wind River is a movie worth seeing, I feel that somehow it takes us away from the fiction to which we are very well accustomed and gives us the reality bath that many of us are missing as a society and as people, it is very well directed and I would say that the performances are faithful to what the director wanted to raise, it is nice to see movie stars when they take their work seriously and implicitly raise their voice against the injustices of the world. I give this movie a score of 8.5/10, I totally recommend it.

  2. Wind River, a bleak but hopeful film@ismaca928d
    [Image](https://www.filmaffinity.com/ve/filmimages.php?movie_id=834864)

From the beginning, a sense of unease and darkness envelops you. The story shows a stark world, where pain abounds.

However, I welcome the fact that through characters like Cory Lambert and Jane Banner there is also light.

Human beings who, despite their weariness and their wounds, decide to fight for what is right.

    [Image](https://www.filmaffinity.com/ve/filmimages.php?movie_id=834864)

I was moved by how their teamwork allows them to gradually uncover the truth behind Natalie's death. With patience and empathy they heal the wounds of the past.

Without a doubt, Taylor Sheridan has succeeded in creating a powerful plot, one that questions violence and pain in forgotten communities. But also about redemption through companionship.

I was left thinking about the importance of embracing the dignity of every human being. And to find in the other, more than an enemy, an ally in the struggle for truth and justice. A film that touches the soul.

    [Image](https://www.filmaffinity.com/ve/filmimages.php?movie_id=834864)

Wind River, a bleak but hopeful film, demands to be seen for the vital conversations it helps to spark around society's most vulnerable.

Sheridan proves himself to be a filmmaker dedicated to authentic representation through stark and poignant storytelling. His is an exciting new Western voice to watch evolve.

  3. "Wind River" (2017) - Movie Review@shortshots1449d

A tragic woeful tale about the pursuit of justice in the unforgiving cold barrens of a Wyoming Indian Reservation.

    Synopsis

A wildlife hunter and rookie FBI agent team-up to solve the mysterious death of a local Indian girl found frozen to death far from home.

    Where'd I watch this?

    Netflix.

    Why'd I watch it?

I find that Elizabeth Olsen is usually in some pretty good stuff.

But if you don't believe me, here's the movie trailer from Youtube.

    What'd I think?

Overall, I liked WIND RIVER. To be fair, it was a bit depressing.

(Also as a WARNING, there's a sexual-assault scene in this movie that was very difficult to watch. As an American, I'm used to my entertainment having a fair bit of blood and explosion but when people do bad stuff to women and children it can leave me feeling rather nauseous.)

    WindRiverDeathSitePoster.jpeg Source

From the opening of Jeremy Renner's Cory Lambert gunning down wolves, picking up his son from his ex-wife, and later discovering the frozen body of a teenage girl in the snow--a girl who used to be friends with his dead daughter--I knew this was going to be one hell of a heavy movie.

His character represents personal justice, while Elizabeth Olsen's Jane Banner -- the FBI rookie -- represents societal justice. There is a constant bit about there's not enough cops in the area, too much drugs, how the town isn't exactly thriving and so the youth commit crimes and end up in prison where some of them can get three meals, a bed, and a solid roof over their heads for the first time in their lives. When the tribal police chief calls for federal help in what looks like a murder case, they send one agent, and a rookie at that. She still does a good job but there is that unavoidable feeling that the government doesn't give a shit what happens on Indian reservations.

of9LNpsEYGwNke6SX9lvZUVXV6v.jpeg Source I like Jeremy Renner's character -- Cory Lambert. He's tired and old but not too old and carries a lot of emotional weight on him. This felt like a perfect role for Renner since he comes off as a worn, thick-skinned kind of guy. Not the biggest, tallest dude but something about him just says it'd take more than a few punches to take him down. Screen Shot 2022-07-10 at 6.30.42 PM.png Source

His character, Cory, is an outsider. He married a Native American woman so he's pretty much the only semi-welcome white guy in town. Cory's on good terms with the tribal police chief, on the mend with his ex-wife, loves his kid but in that sad hesitant way people do after they've already lost a child. To be honest, I found his version of being the white savior of an Indian town not as cringey as I expected. Being a wildlife hunter whose job is to take down predators like wolves, bears, and mountain lions to protect people's families, farms, and property makes him something of an old soldier in that town. He basically kills monsters for a living and this film soon finds him and the FBI rookie chasing down a different type of monster -- maybe the worst of all -- man.

    Screen Shot 2022-07-10 at 6.24.22 PM.png Source

Elizabeth Olsen's Jane Banner is a welcome addition to the film. She's not Wyoming, has no experience with Indian reservations, the Wyoming climate. Her superiors send her there on a whim, as a message -- one that says "We don't give a shit about fixing what goes on down here but we'll send someone to write a report for the books." Or maybe that was not their intention at all, perhaps they sent someone fresh-faced hoping she could navigate a hostile new environment with a newcomer's level of nuance and lack of seasoned assumption. cac2708e-b2f5-11e7-95c2-e7a557915c7a_972x_120559.jpeg Source Olsen does a great job of playing frantic but well-intentioned characters. She's not traditionally attractive but definitely not ugly either. Her Jane Banner is more than just a pretty face. She's there to do her job, not take any short cuts, and she's got the guts and know-how to use a gun when she needs to. Maybe I could've used a few more scenes of her getting the call or order to go this remote area of Wyoming, but asking for additional scenes can be asking for more chances to mess up -- and what scenes she has in the movie are all pretty clean-cut and superb.

    120135.jpeg Source

Gil Birmingham plays Martin, the father of the girl that Cory finds frozen to death far off in the snow. He's a great actor but unfortunately he's very underutilized in this movie. I especially liked him in the recent Hulu crime-series, UNDER THE BANNER OF HEAVEN, which followed 90s cops trying to solve a murder in a tight-knit mormon town. His character in this movie is very restrained which makes sense. His oldest child, his son, is a drug-addicted drug dealer, and his daughter who was supposed to be the shining grace of the family was found frozen to the death in the snow.

I don't want to spoil anything but the movie eventually gets very crowded and intense as it progresses.

    24dde5ffa703334dd9e494fe76a9856c.jpeg Source

While it was well-done and informative about the mistreatment and historical conditions of Indians and their remote reservations which the government does their best to apparently ignore, I did wonder if I could've spent my time watching a much-more uplifting movie, that was also well done, instead.

    Final Grade?

Year: 2017 Category: Neo-Western, Murder Mystery. Director: Taylor Sheridan. Cast: Jeremy Renner, Elizabeth Olsen, Julia Jones, Graham Greene, Jon Bernthal, Matthew Del Negro, Kelsey Chow, Gil Birmingham, Ian Bohen, Martin Sensmeier, Hugh Dillon, Eric Lange, Mason D. Davis, James Jordan, Teo Briones, Tara Karsian.

    Plot

A young FBI agent teams up with a local veteran tracker to investigate the murder of a young woman on a Native American reservation.

    Opinion

During a winter season in Wind River Indian Reservation in Wyoming, Cory Lambert, a hunter, takes his son with his grandfather, the husband of his ex-wife, and then begins to track down the predator who attacked his ex-father-in-law's livestock, but on the way he meets the body of Natalie Hanson, an 18-year-old girl. Soon the FBI special agent Jane Banner arrives at the crime scene. While there, Jane notices all the shortcomings of the town's police department, which receives virtually no help from the government, so asks Cory Lambert for help.

Subsequently the autopsy confirms that Natalie Hanson was raped before she died, so everything seems to indicate that it was a murder, however, Jane can not ask for help from the FBI to continue with the investigation, because Natalie died due to a pulmonary hemorrhage caused by rapid inhalation of sub-zero air, exactly as Cory had said before the autopsy. So Jane, Cory and Ben Shoyo, the Tribal Police Chief, decide to follow all the clues to solve the case.

Taylor Sheridan, known by many to act in Sons of Anarchy, but who was writer of Sicario or the magnificent Hell or High Water, and now not only wrote the script of Wind River but also directed the film, and does both very well. The staging and photography of the film is very good, the climate and the hostility of that world is captured perfectly.

The performance of Jeremy Renner was fine, but neither gives us a special performance or outside of what he usually does. Elizabeth Olsen does it well, her character is credible even though the film does not delve into even a little about her character or her past. The rest of the performances are acceptable, however, I do not think the film has any performance that is excellent or magnificent.

Basically it is a film that tells a simple story, but it is the small details that make the film slightly raise its level. A murder carried out under very harsh weather conditions, an FBI agent, the small local police department, and a hunter who has taken the matter personally, the clues are few, but solving this crime is not very difficult either.

The film serves as entertainment but not much more, it raises a reflection on the treatment that has been given to the Native American population and their living conditions, but I am not sure that it does it in the best way.

    Trailer

    Score

    7/10

Acceptable direction, good script, good performances, and a well done photography work. It is acceptably entertaining, but neither does it have anything necessarily special. At the time of publishing this review the film is available in the Netflix catalog for the following countries: Canada, United Kingdom and the United States.

  5. Review Film: WIND RIVER (2017)@film-trail2960d

Isolated, cold, quiet, often struck by a violent blizzard. Wind River, reservation of the Indians in Wyoming is indeed the perfect stage telling the mystery of murder. Script director and scriptwriter Taylor Sheridan uses the characteristics of the location to build the atmosphere, explains the psychics of the characters, also spreads an obstacle for them. A meticulous approach that harmonizes with other Sheridan works such as Sicario and Hell or High Water. Despite having the main menu of solving the case, Wind River is not a conventional mystery while giving more spotlight on the victims and the beloved figure left behind, Opened by the sight of the sheep lurched by wolves, a chatter of billionaire millionaire millionaires was consumed, and then closed the fact that the absence of exact data on the number of missing Indian women, Wind River became a symbol of the strong (corporate, murderer) prey on the weak (Indian, ). Similar allegories had Sheridan apply in Sicario, the difference now the sheep are not helpless. Despite their predation, they launched their best resistance, as Natalie (Kelsey Chow), an 18-year-old girl who was found dead frozen after running about 8 kilometers without shoes and a cold protector. Before he died, it was suspected he had experienced violence and rape.

FWS (United States Fish and Wildlife Service) agent, Cory Lambert (Jeremy Renner) is the first to find the body of Natalie, while in charge of hunting lions predators of livestock citizens. The case restored Cory's bitter memory, prompting her to assist Jane Banner (Elizabeth Olsen), an FBI agent. Cory is also a victim, but like the Indians on the Wind River who remain standing upright, he is unbreakable. As a hunter of a hunter (lion), Cory devotes all his skills to tracking down the whereabouts of Natalie's killer. In her best performance since The Hurt Locker, Renner is like the Wind River, calm outside, churning on the inside.

Similarly, the Sheridan script, rarely overflowing with emotions or surprises but has a remarkably solid structure. A smart dialogue line that always attracts the charm of each sentence, the clarity of each character's motivation, to the precision of the placement when leading the audience to the question, when to provide a sufficient answer, not too stingy that would bring frustration rather than tension, nor too much to disenchance attention . Like food, Sheridan understands the true shape and time of the appetizers present an interest in the story, the main dish in the form of conflict "filling", and dessert that closed everything with a sense of satisfaction.

Directed by Sheridan himself, the power of the Wind River script is fully channeled. Walk not so fast but tightly, supported by the flow of conversation that sometimes serves to play emotional dynamics or imply facts. In addition to Renner, the ranks of other actors also carry out this character-driven task well. Like Blood's Kate Macer in Sicario, Jane is like a sheep in a flurry of wilderness. But different from Macer, Olsen was able to emphasize that the character among the ignorance chose to try to adjust and grow stronger. While Gil Birmingham as Martin, Natalie's father, appears only on two occasions that maximize the utmost expression of grief and contemplation, In addition to the gripping mystery show, Wind River added value thanks to his invitation-related respect for life. The actual murder case is the way to convey the message. To condemn murderers who deprive life, emphasize the victim's struggle for life, and the power of the post-abandoned relatives keeps trying to continue, re-establishing life. Cold, dark, nan pierced on the surface, Wind River in fact keep the warmth of hope.

    RATING (8/10)

    wind2.jpg IMG

  7. Review Wind River (2017)@showflix3196d

Taylor Sheridan rolled out the small details gradually, which then accumulated, and before we realized it, he had become a giant snowball.

The early part of Wind River seems to remind us of its Fargo Coen Brothers.Taking location in a remote outlying area, the opening scene clearly states that this will be a criminal movie. Similarity I also see from his claim: "inspired by true events". Even so, if Coen uses his "this is a true story" claim to tempt us because we know they've just made a human drama into a comedy, then for Wind River we need to be more alert. Pay close attention to the addition of the plural "s" behind the word "event". This is not a true story, but the story is much happening in the real world. The director, Taylor Sheridan admitted that the statement is a reference to "thousands of similar cases" involving sexual violence in women. Yes.Sheridan is as serious as that. Wind River is a serious movie. Seriously half dead. There's no room for a joke. This is Sheridan's third script as well as his debut directing a movie he wrote himself. I would like to know what the name Sheridan will give to the thematic trilogy which also contains Sicario and Hell or High Water . Nihilistic Western Trilogy, if possible. But it is likely to cross the movie adaptation of Cormac McCarthy novel. The American Justice Trilogy, perhaps more suitable. The three films take place in America that is far from justice, so the characters involved in it should seek their own justice.

Wind River is the name of a reservation of the Indian tribe located in the wetland area of Wyoming. Yet this is the same place as the Sicario / America / Mexico border or the Hell or High Water Texas desert; all three are equally distant, lonely, foreign, and relatively dangerous. In this place, the authorities can not do much. Sheridan was very good at building a solid sense of place . Hearing the Wind River we immediately associate it with snow. Aided by the cinematography of Ben Richardson , the scene is immersive, until we can feel how stinging the cold snow is. Pretty in the eye but deadly.

Therefore, this is not a friendly place for a girl with thin clothes and barefoot to run around in the middle of the night. He ran desperately like avoiding something terrible. Whatever it is, it must be dangerous to force it to run until the cold air damages the lungs and then kills him.

A few days later, the deceased was found by Cory Lambert ( Jeremy Renner ), a forest officer who was asked by the villagers to hunt down the mountain lions who ate the cattle. We first got to know Cory while camouflaged with a white raincoat and fired his rifle accurately on the wolf that was after the sheep. Dor! Symbolism. We know he is so close to the natives (his ex-wife is an Indian), knows every Wind River well, and a reliable person.

Cory knew the deceased. Her name is Natalie ( Kelsey Asbille ), an Indian girl her childhood friend, Emily who three years ago died with almost the same cause.Visum revealed that before he died, Natalie was raped. Here Sheridan flicked a complicated protocol and bureaucracy. Because of the crime scene of the Indian reservation, this case became a federal criminal, the FBI's authority, which then only sent one agent. Local forensics can not write rape

as the cause of death, because Natalie is technically dead because of the cold weather. If so, then the case will again be delegated to local police whose members are not more than members of superheroes.

Of course, the FBI agent, Jane Banner ( Elizabeth Olsen ) gets dizzy. Jane may have a capable capability, but she is not ready for the situation in Wind River. When it comes, he wears a fashionable blouse and high heels. "He'll be in five minutes," Cory said. The inquiry was Jane's responsibility, but she knew she needed help from the local police chief, Ben ( Graham Greene ) and especially Cory who calmly told her many times that she was the "hunter". Yeah, yes Cory, we already know.

Just as I described the set-up at length and slowly, Sheridan also presented the movie without haste. The Wind River plot is actually very simple, but Sheridan tells it quietly, step by step so we can get a strong grip on the location and character. There are not many action-oriented scenes, but the film keeps our attention with the slow-but-sure plot development, until it explodes in a sequence involving firefights and sniper gahar shots. It's satisfying because we're so late with the movie.

The film is a character-based thriller, even the Wind River village becomes its own character. Locations allow him to flick the sensitive issue of indigenous discrimination. This is a very specific place, but the social situation is universal. The character Jane, who is a woman, is not just a screen sweetener let alone romance / sex providers for Cory. It has a powerful function to give viewers the perspective of how to view cases involving the killing of a woman. Olsen gets a role similar to Emily Blunt in Sicario : a tough woman who is trapped in a hard world that she is not ready for yet.

Renner gave an interesting appearance. His character does not show much expression, but we can feel a lot of emotion he carries. This "hunt" became personal for Cory because he had a deeper motive. He knew that his mysteriously killed daughter would not be resolved, but it was possible that Natalie's case resolution would give him some kind of redemption. Probably not for him, as he claims to be aware that life should continue whatever happens, but at least for Natalie's father ( Gil Birmingham ). Birmingham has two very strong minimalist scenes.

The story may be the most straightforward in the narrative among the Sheridan trilogy, because we are presented with monologues and many poetic dialogues to capture subtext and what character it feels. The ending section seemed elongated, maybe Sheridan felt that the movie had not been completed perfectly. But there is something amazing about how to tell a story. Each image highlight, every plot development, every character interaction, all under control. Sheridan rolls out small details gradually, which then accumulates, and before we realize it, he has become a giant snowball.

  8. Wind River - Movie Review@coldsteem3220d

    windriver.jpg

I have to admit, I was intrigued by the movie trailer for Wind River. I am often not impressed by films that are highly touted at the film festivals, although I am often surprised when I get around to watching some of them. Wind River was one of those films that impressed me. Festival premieres often feature dodgy topics, unknown actors and/or experimental processes. This film had big names, from the Director/Writer (Taylor Sheridan, whose films Sicario and Hell or High Water are films I really enjoyed) to the actors (headlined by Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen).

    windriver2.jpg

I like a good thriller. Wind River delivers a deliberately paced thriller with little in the way of twists, but plenty in the way of suspense. The film felt a lot like Sheridan's other work. Slow and deliberate, with characters that can hold up to the sluggish pacing. Because the characters are good, the film works. This film also had the sense of isolation, clear cut antagonists and mildly flawed protagonists of the other films. Most of the characters seemed human, aside from the bad guys, where depth did not have time to develop. Nor was it necessary for this story to work.

    windriver3.jpg

This story paired Elizabeth Olsen as a rookie FBI agent (Jane Banner) who teams up with a grizzled Bureau of Land Management employee (Jeremy Renner, as Corey Lambert) to solve a murder. Or two. Set against the backdrop of the large, isolated, Wind River Indian Reservation, the plot unravels as Banner enlists the aid of Lambert to solve the crime. On the reservation, traditional investigation has limited application. Lambert's tracking skills are crucial to solving the crime. As new elements of the crime surface, the investigation leads in an unexpected direction. The narrative arc culminates with mounting tension before a quick action scene. The loose ends are tied together with precision, making the ending worthwhile. It is a tough film to tie together, given the subject matter. But Sheridan handles the conclusion deftly.

    windriver4.jpg

The narrative arc was gradual, but timely. The pacing seemed slow a couple of times, but that tends to be the norm in suspense films. It wasn't distracting. Particularly because I liked the characters. That was a combination of great dialogue and superb acting. Aside from the lead actors, strong performances were delivered by Graham Greene and Gil Birmingham. The story was interesting enough, not completely linear, but mildly predictable. But the delivery was satisfying. I enjoyed the way the tension built, leading to the inevitable confrontation and resolution. I also liked that some research was done. Immediately before the apex of the story, the dialogue flagged what was coming. This was an intentional flag that the reservation police chief immediately picked up on. For law enforcement or military types, the scene will ring true. I am also a "round counter." In one shooting scene, that was handled properly, although I was mildly perturbed that a rookie FBI agent would clear a house with her weapon fully extended rather than proceeding at close combat pistol. The climactic scene also went a bit too far with the round count...but I can let that one slide. For the most part, the film seemed tactically accurate.

    windriver5.png

There was a lot to like about Wind River. Some may find the pacing too sluggish, but I thought it was fine. The acting and character development assisted in my "buy in" to the film. I think the film should have chosen not to claim that this story was inspired by true events considering how utterly tenuous that claim was. I attempted to read about the true story, guided by the location. It led me to a 2012 expose about general neglect of the Wind River Reservation along with numerous issues it faces. That was not the crux of this film. While it provided a generous backdrop, to suggest a film is true (in my opinion) should require that major elements of the film have a foundation in reality. The film ended with an acknowledgment that no statics are kept for missing women on Reservations. I am not sure how that fit into the film...it seemed an awkward way to tie things together, particularly when the narrative conclusion was satisfying enough. It is poignant, but not particularly relevant. Overall, I left the film satisfied by characters I had a chance to meet and know. I experienced a story that seemed complete. I enjoyed myself. This is a film worth seeing at the theater, 8/10.
