Ever seen a movie and it feels like you know how it will all end because you've seen a movie that's almost like it? The titles are different, storylines are different, you can only see a few similarities but you're almost sure you know how the movie will go.
This movie I'm about to writing on made me feel that exact way. I felt reluctant to see this movie because it was animated and I don't like seeing just any kind of animated movie unless recommended. Well, my sister recommended and I decided to see it and it was just what I wanted at the time I saw... Comedy loaded animated movie.
Thanks to Director/writer Chris Appelhans, we get to see an emotional Chinese spin of Aladdin (Yeah, a rip-off of Aladdin) but before you say, you can't see a movie that has almost same storyline, read this review because you'd have a reason to see the movie. It might also interest you to know the movie was produced by the popular and incredible Chinese actor "Jackie Chan". Wish Dragon is 1hr 38mins 2021 Chinese animated movie for kids and family with packed in comedy to get you laughing so hard.
Just a fun question, why are Chinese movies easy to detect even when they use the English language in them? 😅 Or am I the only one noticing that? I was able to tell almost immediately that it was a Chinese based animation. Well, back to the movie...
About the movie "Wish Dragon"
The movie tells about a young college boy who is finding ways to reconnect with his childhood best friend. Their memories as children and the promises they made to each other, the young boy couldn't wait to be reunited with her again even though it was almost impossible as he wasn't from a wealthy family like the girl. Through his delivery works, he got to meet a god in the most haggard form who gives him a teapot instead of payment for his deliveries. With ignorance of what he has, he takes off to go see his childhood friend (A picture of her on a large bill board) and out of a sad heart, he wished to be reunited with his friend again.
And that brought the teacup emitting out a colorful and powerful wish Dragon who was bent on making the boy wish away so he could go back to the spirit world as it was his last duty to grant one more "Three wishes" before he could leave the world. With a dragon in haste to be free from his wish granting duties and a boy in a quest to find and be reunited with his childhood friend, the two sets out for an adventure that taught a prideful and arrogant once king to be humble, loving and kind to a fellow.
Did the young boy used all his wishes with right purposes? Was the dragon able to grant all his wishes? What exactly happened to the dragon after completing his duties? You'll have to see the movie to find out.
Movie characters and my thoughts on the movie
Long, the wish Dragon who I feel is too beautiful to be called a dragon haha, voice by John Cho. He was once a king who had so much wealth but never loved his subjects, and he ruled as one of the worst kings in history but never felt he was. His time of death, he wasn't allowed to enter the spirit world until he completed a duty of serving humans by being a wish Dragon. His last master happened to be a young fellow who later made him realized what he had been ignorant of because of the powers that wealth gives.
Like we must have seen or guessed already, this movie is almost like the Aladdin story we know. And I must say this dragon part is so much like the Genie in Aladdin whose part is so full of life and comedy, and also that part of acting like they've really lived a thousand years is interesting to see.
Lina (voice by Natasha Liu Bordizzo) and Din (voice by Jimmy Ding), two friends from childhood who got separated after Lina's father moved from the neighborhood in search of greener pastures which Lina never wanted as much as she needed his fatherly love. We could remember that the princess in "Aladdin" was also treated less by her father because of a bad adviser he had (Some similarities here too right?)
One major difference I couldn't help but notice is that Din, the rip-off Aladdin character has family and friends unlike Aladdin who was even mistaken to be a thief. The two friends got in contact with each other thanks to Din's second wish but their lives took another turn when the magic tea pot is being wanted by Lina's father.
The adventure of the dragon and his little master, Din was both funny and emotional as the dragon doesn't seem to know a lot of things about the world's innovation, his mediocre thinking of humans in need of wealth and power only and his quest to get Din wish away quickly so he could go back to the spirit world.
Some scenes I enjoyed most was when the dragon had to act as a human personnel assistant to Din and as a guide during Din's date with Lina, it was so hilarious that I kept rewinding back to the scene. Of course, it isn't a Chinese movie without displaying some kung-fu, their traditions and colorful cultures, the bad guys and a large family.
I'm recommending this movie to families with kids, and to those who doesn't mind seeing an almost replica of another movie, I'm
the movie a rating 7/10... It isn't so unique but it was worth seeing and I enjoyed it.

La película trata sobre un joven universitario que está encontrando formas de reconectarse con su mejor amigo de la infancia. Personajes de la película y mis pensamientos sobre la película
Largo, el dragón de los deseos que siento es demasiado hermoso para llamarlo dragón jaja, voz de John Cho. Una vez fue un rey que tenía tanta riqueza pero nunca amó a sus súbditos, y gobernó como uno de los peores reyes de la historia, pero nunca sintió que lo fuera. En el momento de su muerte, no se le permitió ingresar al mundo de los espíritus hasta que completó el deber de servir a los humanos siendo un Dragón de deseos. Su último maestro resultó ser un joven que más tarde le hizo darse cuenta de lo que había ignorado debido a los poderes que otorga la riqueza.
Como ya debemos haber visto o adivinado, esta película es casi como la historia de Aladdin que conocemos.
