  1. Wonderland – Facing Death: Artificial Intelligence? [En-Es]@neruel681d

Technology can be a subtle response, but it is also a drama that ends up causing pain if it cannot be controlled. A girl who sees her dead mother through a mobile phone, and a flight attendant woman who clings to the desire for her boyfriend to wake up from his coma. Wonderland is a heart-wrenching fantasy.

Suzy and Park Bo-gum star in a story together for the first time. A 1 hour and 53-minute film is available on Netflix, directed by Kim Tae Yong. Science fiction is the defining element of this plot, which blends emotionality, technology and human emotions perfectly.

I want to be thorough and directional with the fact that human beings are not prepared to face death. I dare say that mankind does not face the notoriety that we are all born to live and then die. It is under this argument that each of the scenes in Wonderland is composed.

There are two stories in the film. The first is between Park Tae Joo (Park Bo-gum) and the young stewardess Jung In (Suzy). A romance between two young people who are paralysed because Park Tae Joo is in a coma. The second is that of Bai Li (Tang Wei) and his daughter, who is unaware that she has died.

These two stories have two things in common: the absence of a loved one for someone. The plot of this film focuses on a video call service that recreates the client's deceased loved one. Interesting? Interesting enough.

¿Interesante? Lo suficiente.

An even more appealing aspect is that the film does not focus on artificial intelligence as a threat to humanity like thousands of recent productions; rather, director Kim Tae Yong focused on highlighting the reflection of the meaning of death and the value of human life through emotions such as grief. That grief is evidenced by the loss of a loved one.

The director plays with the process of assimilation of the loss of a human life and also with human nature itself, caused by the existing bonds and connections. Can a human bond be easily erased? The answer is no.

Visually, Wonderland is an aesthetically well-crafted film. There is a futuristic setting, but it does not undermine reality. I would even go so far as to say that it relates very well to what we see today. There is a remarkable balance between science fiction, technology and emotionality. That interconnectedness stands out and makes the film unappealing.

The performances of Suzy, Park Bo-gum and Tang Wei are exceptional. Each of their performances sticks to the reality that any human being can live.

Ethically, Wonderland depicts that artificial intelligence can decide whether to be important to a human being and deal in the rudest way with the fact that they are not real people. Even more interestingly, the film envisions the possibility in the future that artificial intelligence could feel human emotions. It's complex, but not impossible. We might get to that point at some point.

There is a question that the film raises: Is it moral and ethical to recreate the deceased with artificial intelligence? In the film, there is a harsh shock on the part of the characters, it is very hard for Bai Li's mother to face that she is dead, and she talks to a paid artificial service to hide the truth from her granddaughter.

The same goes for Jung In, who is confused between the clash of real and virtual when her boyfriend Park Tae Joo wakes up from a coma, and she still maintains video calls with the Park Tae Joo created with artificial intelligence by Wonderland Company. Reality is distorted, and so are emotions.

A boy who has awakened from a coma and does not understand what is happening, feels his emotions confused and has no clear perception of his surroundings. Time has passed, and he has aged. Those are the directional messages of the film... While his girlfriend does not understand the clash of emotions of the person she claims to love, reality is mixed, and he thought the cheerful guy without any problems always was. The truth is that Wonderland was an illusion.

All in all, this is a film with a lovely message. There are two stories, that of a mother and that of a couple struggling despite the difficulty. A science fiction story that is romantic and maintains a captivating, moderate drama.

  2. Film Review: Wonderland (2003)@drax764d

    (source: tmdb.org)

John Holmes, the most iconic male porn star of the 1970s, has left an indelible mark on popular culture. His life and persona served as an inspiration for Dirk Diggler, the fictional protagonist of Paul Thomas Anderson's celebrated 1997 film Boogie Nights. In 2003, James Cox's crime drama Wonderland brought Holmes back to the screen, with Val Kilmer portraying the real-life character.

The plot of Wonderland revolves around the darkest event in Holmes' relatively short life. On July 1st, 1981, Los Angeles was shaken by the news of a brutal quadruple murder that occurred at an address on Wonderland Avenue in Laurel Canyon. The film, told through various and sometimes conflicting points of view, attempts to reconstruct the events before, during, and after the murder, while exploring Holmes' role in the crime.

Comparisons between Wonderland and Boogie Nights are inevitable; the 2003 film is much darker and less pleasant to watch. This is primarily due to its depiction of a vicious violent crime that was never formally solved, leaving the victims' families without proper closure. The unpleasantness of the subject matter – the descent of a quasi-celebrity into a pathetic, amoral, and almost irredeemably immoral drug addict who associates with the lowest criminal scum – was not well-received by critics, who saw it as unworthy of serious drama. Other critics were dissatisfied with the complicated narrative and some of Cox's creative decisions, which made certain scenes disjointed, confusing, and generally unpleasant to watch.

While these criticisms have merit, most of the film's flaws are compensated by its flawless period reconstruction and, more importantly, by the excellent acting. Val Kilmer delivers one of the best performances of his career, portraying the seemingly shallow Holmes as a complex character. He is a pathetic coward, a despicably abusive partner to his girlfriend Dawn Schiller (played valiantly by Kate Bosworth), and at the same time, a skilled manipulator who somehow manages to sidestep the investigation and emerge from the affair almost unscathed.

In addition to Kilmer's standout performance, Wonderland features memorable portrayals by Eric Bogosian as Eddie Nash, a nightclub owner and big-time cocaine dealer whose apparent celebrity fascination with Holmes sets in motion the events that lead to the bloodbath. Lisa Kudrow, still associated with her role in Friends at the time, also gives an excellent dramatic performance as Holmes' ex-wife Sharon Holmes, the only "functional" character and the closest thing to a moral anchor in the film.

Wonderland may not be an easy watch and its dark subject matter and complex narrative may have deterred some viewers, but for those willing to engage with the material, the film offers a powerful and thought-provoking exploration of the human psyche and the consequences of our actions. With its exceptional performances and meticulous period reconstruction, Wonderland is a film that lingers long after the credits roll.
