    Plot / Trama

In 1974 a massacre shocked Amityville, a town located in a county of New York, since a man named Ronald DeFeo Jr. murdered his entire family with a shotgun while they slept, the man said that in the house he heard creepy voices that prompted him to commit the crime. A year later the Lutz family moves to the house with the illusion of having a great home without knowing what they would face since not only the ghost of Jodie DeFeo lives in the house, but also indigenous people since Kathy discovers that the house It had previously belonged several centuries ago to a reverend who tortured Native Americans, so these ghosts also appear in the house. At first everything was calm, however, as the days go by, Chelsea, the little girl of the Lutz, begins to see the spirit of Jodie DeFeo for what her parents believe is an imaginary friend, and George begins to be tormented by the voices and spirits. from the house so he begins to become violent.

After experiencing several paranormal events in the house, Kathy Lutz goes to a priest and asks him to bless the house for protection, but he leaves when the ghosts manifest. Convinced that the house is possessed, Kathy tries to get her children out of the house, but the possessed George tries to kill them all, so Kathy manages to knock him unconscious and takes him out of the house with her children. Far from home George is freed from demonic possession and the family leaves the house permanently. Only staying in the house for a total of 28 days, the movie ends with Jodie standing in the house screaming as the household objects rearrange themselves and then disembodied hands drag Jodie under the floor.

    Mi Opinión / My Opinion

This movie was the first movie to really scare me the first time I saw it, I remember that after seeing it I didn't sleep well for several days because I had nightmares hahaha it's based on a real event since the murder of the DeFeo family at hands really happened there of one of the sons of Ronald DeFeo Sr. in the 70s. And also George and Kathy Lutz lived there with their children and the house is considered one of the most haunted houses in American folklore which has been modified to avoid the curious tourists. I don't know if it really belonged to a reverend torturer of Native Americans, but in an extra of the DVD of the film I was able to visualize the testimony of Lorraine Warren) worldwide known because the paranormal cases that she and her husband Ed Warren have experienced inspired the Conjuring movies) in which she claims to have been in the house and that really is very possessed.

I really liked the photography and special effects of the film, the makeup of the specters is really creepy since those creatures managed to scare me the first time I saw it hahaha but thank God now I can watch it without being scared, although the film does not It was recorded in the original house since they had to build a temporary one to add the famous "eye" windows that were modified in the original. I'm still curious to visit the real one but not to find out if it's really haunted hahaha. It should be noted that the story was modified in the film since in real life Jodie was not the spirit of a girl but manifested in the form of a pig (or something like that I read) and in reality none of the victims had that name.

It also has many really terrifying scenes, like the one in which one of the Lutz family's children goes to the bathroom at dawn and when he is in the toilet an Indian spirit appears next to him, or in which George walks through the basement of the house where he sees the scenes in which the reverend tortured Native Americans. Also the scene where Jodie appears in the closet to Lisa the babysitter and forcibly inserts her finger into the wound her brother caused when he killed her. When I saw this movie for the first time I was 14 years old, so it managed to scare me, but then I saw it again several years later and it didn't scare me so this second time I was able to enjoy the whole movie without screaming from my armchair.

Although this movie is a remake of one previously released in 1979 and received many negative reviews, in my opinion it's not bad to have a good time of horror and jump enjoying it. I liked the story in general and in fact it also aroused my curiosity to find out the true story. I really like movies based on true events and today I would like to recommend this one to everyone who hasn't seen it yet. The last thing I found out when I read about this case was that the murderer Ronald DeFeo Jr passed away last year and his cause of death is unknown, also the house is currently totally unrecognizable and was recently sold.

    My Opinion / Mi Opinión

Well, what can I said? When I first saw this movie, I remember that I scared so much, many scenes scared me a lot, and I remember that since I saw it at night, I couldn't sleep afterwards. The images stayed in my mind hahaha which made me like the movie because in the horror genre there are many that in the end are not scary at all and very boaring, and I as fan of terror movies I like the ones that really scares. This one totally exceeded my expectations at that time.

Released in 2005, the film stars Ryan Reynolds, Melissa George, Chloe Grace Moretz, Jesse James and Jimmy Bennett as the Lutz family. What caught my attention the most was the real story of this case, because although in the movie the story was edited a little bit, it made me very curious and I decided to investigate what really happened. I was surprised that Ed and Lorraine Warren had worked on this case as well. Today it is one of my favorite movies and even though I have seen it before it still scares me in several parts. I recommended it to fans of horror movies.

  3. The Amityville Horror's Review - RyanReynoldsChallenge (14/48)@ykretz1640d

    The Amityville Error

I don't know how this is humanly possible to do 2 of the worst movies in the world in a row. And to be honest, Blade Trinity had way more qualities than this one.

After a long time trying to convince my Girlfriend to watch this movie with me, we sat on the couch and launched it on the TV. She has a way lower tolerance than me because after something like 30 minutes she wanted to stop it because it's unbearable. Instead of that we made things easy and watch few episodes of Brooklyn Nine-nine to relax.

To be quick, the Movie relates the events on the Amityville haunted house. In 1974 a family's father killed his wife and kids because someone (a spirit) told him. And some time after that a couple decided to buy it and live here with their kids. After time the father turned crazy and tried to kill his family too.

To show you what is wrong with that movie I decided to list all the strengths and weaknesses of the movie.

    amitysrtengths.png

    Ryan Reynolds' Jokes

Yeah ! Even if the movie is at least as bad as Blade, the defects are not the same. Here Ryan Reynolds is pretty funny, and that's just confirming my humor theory I explained in last post. Here he's not making jokes but making fun of things happening with the people around him. He's not just making jokes but turning the situation to be funny. At the beggining of the movie he's cooking an omelette, and my gf and I was really thinking it was ugly and looking disgusting. One second later that's what's happening :

    image.png

They're not even saying a word, just looking at it and making that face. And that works, if you were not paying attention you did not see it.

    It's really nice

I found it really nice, the colors, the lights and the camera angles are most of time more than beautiful, the characters are too, such as the house. They succeed to make a really fancy package for the story happening in that house. Even the effects are pretty well made. I don't think there is computer processed visual effects (probably there is but not a lot like there are in nowadays horror movies) but there are practical ones. And they are pretty nice, the makeup and even the editing making some moments work which shouldn't.

    image.png

Here he's attacked by bloody hands in his bath.

image.png Even if we cannot notice that in most of the movie, he's always wearing these contact lenses with red veins in it and that kind if details is really working in that movie.

    We're done

Yep, the qualities of the movie were pretty quick. No worry the post isn't finished, there are a lot of weaknesses.

    amityw.png

    Cliché

In this movie you can see all the Horror genre Clichés.

    The weather is too perfect

The First massacre takes place during a stormy night, a lit of rain and thunder, and when Ryan Reynolds decides to kill his whole family guess how's the weather ? Yep, rain and thunder.

image.png And the thunder is really really bright !

The Sexy Babysitter for the kids

    image.png

This thing is so much a cliché there is a movie just about that named the babysitter and the only way they find to make it "correct" was to make it a comedy more than an horror movie.

Here I don't really know why they wanted to make her sexy because the only thing that changes is that the kid wants to flirt with her. She's here to learn the kids that a family have been killed here and discover that the house is indeed haunted.

    The dog Barking at nothing

To show there's something supernatural, the dog barks at nothing, but at the second time it happens I already feels like this is already too much, this is just making things slower.

    image.png

And there are a lot more clichés but I don't have enough time to write them all.

    The Priest

A priest is called to come in the house, study it and exorcise it. But the house is too dangerous for him so he has to go. And that's all, after that he disappears..

It looks like every Horror movies.

Not to mention that the story is almost exactly the same as "The Shining" the movie looks like it pretty often. The first guy killed his family and himself and the new owners are doing the same. In The Shining the boy is like controlled by the ghost, here it's the little girl seeing them and talking with them.

There are even a lot of shots that look the same, the car driving with an helicopter shot, the bathroom.. RR even destroy a wooden wall with an axe and try to pass his head through the hole, even if he doesn't want to kill someone behind, that's the same.

BUT, the Shinning isn't the only movie ! With the Screenshot in the bath above, you could see some similarities with the grunge with a hand coming out of nowhere in a shower :

    image.png

There's even some things we can see in movies which are younger than this one, but unfortunately the best version of the scene isn't in AmityVille...

    image.png

He's looking their memory films, giggling for no reasons with his too white teeth, the exact same film we saw at the beginning of the movie, and he's discovering something strange on it, a supernatural face. Exactly the same as Sinister which is my favorite horror movie of all time and one of my favorite movies.

Once again, there are a lot of other examples of things they took from other movies. But if you wanna see them, watch the movie 😉

    The movie is bad

Yes ! This is my argument ! The movie is bad for too much reasons ! Everything is too fast, I mean they start to live in the house and only 7 minutes later he is menacing one of the kids and many ghosts already appeared ! TAKE YOUR TIME PLEASE !

There is one sex scene and it's.. Not bad but, that's a sex scene, that's always cringe. And the musics are not helping, there are too much music all along the movie.

    Ryan Reynolds

I don't know if replacing him with someone else would be better, but he or his character is the main problem of the movie. He's becoming mean too fast and it's always too much. And as I said for Blade trinity, they're trying to show how muscular he is and make you wet.

    image.png

Just imagine, you're a 7 years old little girl, it' 3 in the morning, and your step dad comes in your room like that after you saw him under the rain outside talking to the dog by the window. That's exactly what happened, this is probably the most terrifying and cringe moment of the movie. Why didn't he put a shirt on ?

    RECOMMANDATION

I clearly don't recommend anyone who wants to watch a good movie to watch this one. This is the kind of movie you have to be prepared for. The first time I saw it I didn't know and have been really happy that I wasn't alone. We were able to laugh about it.

  4. 'The Amityville Horror' (1979) Revisited: Actually, It's Not a Very Good Movie@janenightshade2444d
*I remembered the original **Amityville Horror** as a good film, but sometimes, our memories are not all they're cracked up to be.*

The original version of The Amityville Horror (1979), directed by Stuart Rosenberg and starring James Brolin and Margot Kidder as the haunted Lutz couple, is often ranked with the great late 60s-70s horror classics, like Rosemary’s Baby, The Exorcist, and The Omen. It’s certainly as famous as those films. And it's still being re-released in various formats and watched by millions.

Recently, I sat down to watch it again after many years, expecting to revisit an old favorite on a spooky October afternoon. Unfortunately, as the film started to stream, I got a sudden, shock realization: it’s actually not very good. Its legendary status notwithstanding, the original Amityville Horror kind of sucks.

First, the script: it’s meandering and repetitive. How many times do we have to see a priest or a nun get waylaid while they try to help the Lutz family? Every time Ol’ Scratch (or whatever the source of the “horror” is — it’s not clear) tries to stop them from visiting the Lutz house, the clergymen/women just give up and go away. Oh well, the devil wins again! Father Merrin and Father Karras from The Exorcist, they ain’t.

Then there’s the ever-changing nature of the reason why the house is haunted.

First, it’s the ghost of Ron DeFeo, who murdered his entire family in the house, and who’s supposedly possessing George Lutz. Then, it’s haunted because the house was built on the same site as a house that belonged to a colonial-era warlock who escaped the Salem Witch Trials (really?). Then, it’s because Native Americans allegedly used the site to bury people they considered evil. Then, at last, it’s because there’s a “passage to hell” in the basement. It’s like the scriptwriter just decided to throw together a random assortment of common 70s horror tropes — Satanic visitations, colonial witches, reincarnation, Native American folklore — and let the audience decide which one of them sticks.

Now let’s talk about the direction. Stuart Rosenberg directed several good but forgotten films (The Pope of Greenwich Village, 1984) and one bona fide classic (Cool Hand Luke, 1967). Here, he shows little talent for building up suspense and dread. Random terrible things keep happening to the Lutzes, and then they finally run away. Plus, a priest (Rod Steiger) who tries especially hard to help the Lutzes goes apeshit. That’s it. There’s no real plot and zero character development. The script also stereotypes Kathy Lutz’s northeast Irish/Italian-American family as loud, poorly educated, and super-Catholic.

There are a few very effective scenes, such as when George looks under the sofa and finds the wrapper band for the missing wad of cash his brother-in-law unaccountably lost, taunting him. And the opening scenes depicting the murders of the De Feo family are chilling. I’ll even defend the flying, demonic pig scene that everybody else laughs at. But all of these parts together don’t add up to a cohesive whole. They’re like a Halloween Haunted House tour, where random horrors jump out at you for awhile, and then you finish the tour and leave.

Then there’s the acting. Brolin is remote as George Lutz and never really connects with the audience. No one cares when he starts to lose his shit while supposedly being possessed by Ron DeFeo. Kidder looks pretty, and that’s about it. Steiger is totally embarrassing as the ranting and raving priest; what was he on?

The cinematographer (Fred Koenekamp, Oscar-winner for The Towering Inferno, 1974) tries too hard to make the interior of the Amityville house look dark and menacing — so dark it’s hard to see what’s going on. To be fair, the exterior scenes depicting a gorgeous autumnal Long Island are stunning.

The one real bright spot is the score by Lalo Schiffrin. It was nominated for an Oscar, a true achievement -- especially when considering the traditional prejudice the film Academy displays towards horror. BTW, true story: Schriffin wrote the original score for The Exorcist, but it was rejected by studio executives for being “too dark.” Lol, imagine a “too dark” score for The Exorcist!!

For the life of me, I can’t say why the original Amityville remains a classic after all these years. Possibly, viewers are intrigued after reading the book and believing it’s based on a “true story.” (Ron DeFeo is a real person who actually did murder his family in the Amityville house.) It's worth a watch, because you can't be a true horror fan without knowing it, but it doesn't deserve to be in the top tier of great 70s horror films. It's definitely second-tier like Michael Winner's The Sentinel (1977). Now streaming on Amazon, free to Prime members.
