Hello film lovers, today I want to talk to you about one of the remakes of one of the most famous stories about spirits and demons in the USA, I'm talking of course about "Horror in Amityville" a book written by the Lutz family based on their experiences at 112 Ocean Avenue in Long Island. Several films have been made about it but today I want to talk specifically about the 2005 version which was the one that my mum, my sister and I (lovers of the horror genre in film and literature) went to see with great enthusiasm to the cinema, but we left the theater terribly disappointed for some reasons.
Hola amantes del cine, el día de hoy quiero hablarles de uno de los remake de una de las historias más famosas acerca de espíritus y demonios en USA, les hablo por supuesto de "Horror en Amityville" un libro escrito por la familia Lutz basado en sus experiencias vividas en el número 112 de Ocean Avenue en Long Island. Se han hecho varias películas al respecto pero hoy quiero hablarles específicamente de la versión del 2005 que fue la que mi mamá, mi hermana y yo (amantes del género terror en cine y literatura) fuimos a ver con mucho entusiasmo al cine, pero salimos de la sala terriblemente decepcionadas por algunas razones.
This version shows us a family, the Lutz's, who as in the original story are looking for a new house, so they suddenly get a huge property in Long Island at a very low price, however the real estate agent reveals that the reason for the price is due to the violent events that occurred a few years ago when Ronald DeFeo shot his parents and siblings, Even so, the Lutzes keep the house, but step by step they begin to experience paranormal events, but the worst of all is that George Lutz (the father of the family) begins to have abrupt changes in his behaviour that lead him to a dangerous emotional abyss.
Esta versión nos muestra a una familia, los Lutz, quienes al igual que en la historia original están buscando una nueva casa, es así como de pronto consiguen una enorme propiedad en Long Island a muy bajo precio, sin embargo la agente de bienes raíces les revela que el motivo del precio se debe a los hechos violentos que ocurrieron unos años atrás cuando Ronald DeFeo le disparó a sus padres y hermanos, aún así los Lutz se quedan con la casa, sin embargo poco a poco comienzan a experimentar eventos paranormales, pero lo peor de todo es que George Lutz (el padre de la familia) comienza a tener cambios abruptos de conducta que lo van conduciendo a un peligroso abismo emocional.
First of all I want to clarify that if you are a lover of the horror genre and you see this film without having read the book, without knowing the details that made the original story more interesting, then yes, you could enjoy it because in general it is a pretty good film, it has a well worked cinematography, the performances were also good in my opinion, but the reason why I was disappointed was precisely because of the physical characterization of the character George (played by Ryan Reynolds) and of course the story.
En primer lugar quiero aclarar que si eres amante del genero terror y ves esta película sin haber leído el libro, sin conocer los detalles que hacían más interesantes a la historia original, entonces sí, podrías disfrutarla porque en materia general es una película bastante buena, tiene una fotografía bien trabajada, las actuaciones también estuvieron buenas en mi opinión, pero el motivo por el que me decepcioné fue precisamente por la caracterización física del personaje George (interpretado por Ryan Reynolds) y desde luego la historia.
First of all we have the physical characterisation of George, Ryan Reynolds is even the mental image I have of the character when I read the book, however there is one detail where the characterisation department failed, George Lutz didn't even have a beard, his appearance was quite neat at the beginning of the story, and the beard started to appear as a sign of the decline of his neglect about his personal image, the character stops shaving, stops bathing and becomes more and more pale, anxious and violent. In the film, these physical traits are hardly noticeable, but only towards the end when we see him becoming paler than usual and of course violent.
En primer lugar tenemos la caracterización física de George, Ryan Reynolds es incluso la imagen mental que tengo del personaje cuando leí el libro, sin embargo hay un detalle donde el departamento de caracterización falló, George Lutz ni siquiera tenía barba, su apariencia era bastante prolija al principio de la historia, y la barba comenzó a aparecer como un signo del declive de su descuido acerca de su imagen personal, el personaje deja de rasurarse, de bañarse y cada vez se pone más pálido, ansioso y violento. En la película estos rasgos físicos casi no se aprecian, sino casi al final donde lo vemos más pálido de lo común y desde luego violento.
But this is something that also happened in the 1979 film and ironically this version by George Lutz was even used for the cover of the edition of the book I read, but I think that if the physical description of the character had been respected in both versions, this would have generated a greater impact as the disdain that the character feels for his family, his work and of course for himself would have been perceived in the most graphic way.
Pero esto es algo que ocurrió también en el film de 1979 e incluso irónicamente esta versión de George Lutz fue usada para la portada de la edición del libro que yo leí, pero considero que si se hubiese respetado la descripción física del personaje en ambas versiones esto hubiese generado mayor impacto al percibir de la manera más gráfica el desdén que el personaje va sintiendo respecto a su familia, su trabajo y desde luego por sí mismo.
Another thing that really disappointed me was the story, at the beginning everything was fine about it but then everything started to change in the plot God! 🤦 they weren't even changes for the better, what need did they have to change the scary pig demon Joddie for a ghost girl? 🤷, I won't deny that the appearance of the ghosts is terrifying and there is even a scene with Joddie that I think it's particularly creepy but I reckon that if we had seen the pig's footprints in the snow, heard his squeals in the distance and subsequently seen it behind the girl in the window, watching George Lutz as its terrible red eyes glowed malevolently it would have been ten times more shocking and terrifying.
Otra cosa que de verdad me decepcionó fue la historia, al principio todo iba bien respecto a esto pero luego todo comenzó a cambiar en la trama ¡Dios! 🤦♂ ni siquiera fueron cambios para bien, ¿Qué necesidad tenían de cambiar al aterrador cerdo demonio Joddie por una niña fantasma? 🤷♀, no les voy a negar que la aparición de los fantasmas es aterradora e incluso hay una escena con Joddie que me parece particularmente escalofriante pero considero que si hubiésemos visto las huellas de cerdo en la nieve, escuchado sus chillidos a lo lejos y posteriormente lo hubiésemos visto detrás de la niña en la ventana, observando a George Lutz mientras sus terribles ojos rojos brillaban de forma malévola hubiese sido diez veces más impactante y aterrador.
I don't want to say that Jodie's appearance as a ghost girl wasn't creepy, it was, but I think that using Jodie as it looks in its literary version would have been great. Below is the scene I found most shocking in the film with Jodie as the little girl.
No quiero decir que la aparición de Jodie como niña fantasma no haya sido espeluznante, lo fue, pero creo que haber utilizado a Jodie tal como luce en su versión literaria hubiese sido genial. A continuación les dejaré la escena que me pareció más impactante en la película con la niña Jodie.
Another thing that disappointed me was to see where the film was going in terms of the story, that is, while in the original story we see that George is heading towards his own decline and that he even becomes very rough with his family, if I remember correctly he never chased them with intentions of killing them, he was very irritable because of the cold he felt at home and that he could not relieve with the heating, he was also constantly tormented by the demons of the house and especially by Jodie near the end of the story, He could feel their sharp legs walking on his chest and sometimes he could hear as if a band was playing in the lower floors of the house, but the climax of the story is more shocking when we see that the Lutz run away terrified when they start to see the demons, even the one that scared them the most was the anthropomorphic figure coming out of the stairs, but in the film version both 2005 and '79 (especially this one) we only saw George acting as a more modern version of Jack Torrance from the movie "The Shining".
Otra de las cosas que me decepcionó fue ver hacia donde se dirigía la película en cuanto a la historia, es decir, si bien en la historia original vemos que George va dirigiéndose a su propia decadencia y que incluso llega a ser muy brusco con su familia, si mal no recuerdo nunca los persiguió con intenciones de matarlos, él estaba muy irritable a causa del frío que sentía en su hogar y que no lograba aliviar con la calefacción, además era atormentado constantemente por los demonios de la casa y en especial por Jodie casi al final de la historia, podía sentir sus patas afiladas caminar por su pecho y a veces oía como si una banda estuviera tocando en los pisos inferiores de la casa, pero el climax de la historia es más impactante cuando vemos que los Lutz huyen despavoridos al comenzar a ver a los demonios, incluso el que más les asustó fue la figura antropomórfica saliendo de la escalera, pero en la versión cinematográfica, tanto 2005 como en la del 79 (especialmente en esta) solo vimos a George actuar como una versión más moderna de Jack Torrance de la película "El Resplandor".
In conclusion I can tell you that I don't consider it a bad horror film, but a bad adaptation of the novel, it is even a bad remake of the 79 version that although it also has very isolated parts of the original story, at least it has more similarity with it, we can even see a text with the epilogue on screen, which makes you feel that you are indeed watching a material "based on real life".
En conclusión les puedo decir que no la considero una mala película de terror, sino una mala adaptación de la novela, incluso es un mal remake de la versión del 79 que aunque también tiene partes muy aisladas de la historia original, por lo menos tiene más similitud con ella, incluso podemos ver un texto con el epílogo en pantalla, lo que te hace sentir que en efecto estás viendo un material "basado en la vida real".

Even if we cannot notice that in most of the movie, he's always wearing these contact lenses with red veins in it and that kind if details is really working in that movie.
