Apocalypse Z: New World, the sequel to Apocalypse Z: The Beginning of the End (2024), tells a new story centered on “Roberto,” who is living in the Canary Islands when the TSJ virus outbreak begins. Six months after the world has been overrun by zombies, he and others suffer all the consequences of their home becoming humanity’s last refuge. One of those consequences is compulsory military conscription, which will lead him on a suicide mission that may be linked to his past—specifically to his father, who is accused of having caused the virus outbreak.
Although I found the film that kicked off this franchise entertaining at times, I still don’t consider it that good, primarily because it dragged on as it tried to delve into the protagonist’s trauma and depression, giving it greater dramatic weight—a weight that is completely erased when he later transforms into the typical leader/hero of this type of production. Surely for this sequel, they wanted the pace to be more fast-paced, which is why this film runs just over an hour and thirty minutes and features more action scenes—which isn’t necessarily a bad thing—but the execution, the script, and the acting make the whole thing completely inconsequential.
Carles Torrens returns as director in this sequel, which, as I mentioned earlier, was intended to make the action the main focus; in my opinion, it shows that this director failed to convey anything positive at all, since the scenes are generic or simply boring and predictable. Watching the movie, it felt as though everything was completely improvised; it’s as if the characters are acting on a whim and no one knows what to do, and if they do decide to do something, it’s absolutely terrible. I was surprised that it looked so bad because, in the third and final act of the previous film, I’m absolutely certain they did a better job.
The screenplay was written by Ángel Agudo, who also wrote the screenplay for the first film; this time around, I hold him directly responsible for how bad this sequel is; it’s possibly the worst screenplay of the entire year, as he created characters who are beyond boring, with motivations for their actions that are completely insane—motivations that are masked by morality or the need to be heroes, something I personally found no justification for, despite this being a zombie movie. Its characters are weak, its dialogue is empty, and at times I even thought I was watching a satire of this genre of films; but to be fair, it does offer certain elements that I consider well-done, such as its critique of politics—in this case, Spanish politics—and the creation of the character who embodies that very aspect; I think that’s the only thing the film gets right.
I have no hesitation in naming Apocalipsis Z: Nuevo Mundo as one of the worst movies of the year. It’s more than just boring—it has the worst characters I’ve ever seen, a protagonist who lacks any sense of leadership or heroism, and a story that contributes absolutely nothing. I wasn’t expecting originality; in fact, my expectations were very low—I just hoped to be entertained—but this time, none of that happened. I think that, if you analyze it in depth, you can find even more major flaws in the script and thus be quite critical of many decisions. I agree that the underlying theme is morality—deciding what is good or bad—but it doesn’t work because there’s no truly compelling reason for the characters to make certain decisions. My advice is not to watch this movie—it’s not a good sequel; don’t waste your time.
