We are continuing with @wiseagent's initiative—Horror and Halloween Month—and this time, I’ll be reviewing the famous anime Perfect Blue. I was looking for horror anime to participate in the initiative, and two were recommended to me:
Paprika—which I already reviewed for the initiative—and the other, Perfect Blue. I have to confess, I didn't know what I was getting myself into. Paprika was truly mind-blowing, but Perfect Blue left my head spinning. When I first started watching it, I thought it was just a simple story about a girl feeling let down because she hadn't fulfilled her true dream: being part of a girl group.
As the story progresses, a series of inexplicable murders begins to occur. These killings are linked to the artistic choices Mima makes in her career; people close to her at work start getting murdered, leaving Mima psychologically shaken. At times, the plot became a bit confusing because reality blurred with Mima's dreams and thoughts—to the point where I couldn't say for sure whether the person acting was Mima herself or the characters from her dreams. She felt this way too, conveying the anguish of not knowing exactly what was happening.
As the story unfolds, a mysterious stalker appears, implying he is behind the murders and obsessed with Mima; yet at other times, it seems as though Mima herself has a split personality. It all concludes in a mind-blowing way, revealing that Mima was simply a girl searching for answers, and that the people around her—those she trusted—were not who she thought they were.
It’s an incredible anime, friends, featuring a profound story and a high level of psychological horror. If you love psychological horror and suspense, this anime will blow your mind—I highly recommend it.
