For Night Will Come

Let's talk about horror and teen drama. That's the combination this film offers. A film that, beyond its fantastical elements, tackles several important themes, not only about teenage life, but about the stage of life in which certain situations are experienced with greater intensity.

A seemingly normal family: husband, wife, and children. They appear to be one of those typical families, in this case French, who arrive in a town where most people know each other and expect to be welcomed. From the beginning, we notice something strange about them; they place great importance on acting normally, on their son going unnoticed, on him fitting in.

The film is intriguing from the start; we want to know what's happening, and the answers come very quickly. What matters here is the drama of Philémon, the protagonist of the story, that peculiar son of the family, who has an immense need to be normal, to be accepted. He's tired of a lifestyle that torments him. The conflict will erupt when he meets Camila, his young neighbor, a teenager like himself.

So far, nothing original, just a teenage romance, but their differences, especially Philémon's, will be the biggest obstacle. On the one hand, she wants to escape the routine of a boring town where nothing interesting or exciting ever happens. And on the other hand, there's Philémon, who wants to fit in, have friends, and, of course, like any teenager with raging hormones, falls for this pretty girl and wants to do what we all love: dance.

The film was the first feature film by French filmmaker Céline Rouzet. The problem is that, since its release three years ago, the director has done practically nothing else. I checked her Instagram and she hasn't posted anything since the end of last year, and I didn't see any sign that she's working on a new project. I don't know the reason, but this drought could have many causes; perhaps she's taking her time before embarking on another project, or maybe she simply doesn't feel like doing anything anymore, it's that simple.

I saw an interview she gave during the film's promotion, and it's surprising how personal the story is to her. You might wonder how that's possible. It's fiction and fantasy; none of it happened in real life. It's certainly fiction, but through it, she narrated aspects of her family life, drawing inspiration from her own family, from herself, and above all, from her brother, who, as she mentioned in the interview, suffers from an illness that caused him a lot of rejection during his adolescence.

This is where I see that she wants to convey a clear message. The fear of the unknown and the rejection suffered for being different, for having a disability, an illness, etc., is what the filmmaker wanted to capture with this story, adding a fantastical element that also falls within the horror genre. If you watch the trailer, you'll understand what I mean, but I prefer not to reveal it here so as not to spoil the experience for those who haven't seen it.

The ending didn't quite convince me. Everything happens too quickly, and some scenes didn't quite fit together. I would have done things differently, but it's not my kind of film, so I have to accept what the director offers.

It's a French horror film, a teen drama with a touch of romance. For me, it has good ingredients and is entertaining. I prefer it to any commercial Hollywood garbage. Yes, I've seen it too, but Hollywood bores me so much that I don't even feel like recommending the latest films I've seen from the capital of cinema. That's why I prefer to bring you films from other places, even though I know most of you don't like them.

Hablemos de terror y drama adolescente. Esa es la combinación que ofrece esta película. Un filme que, más allá de los elementos fantásticos, aborda varios temas importantes, no solo sobre la vida adolescente, sino sobre la etapa de la vida en la que ciertas situaciones se viven con mayor intensidad.

Una familia aparentemente normal: marido, mujer e hijos. Parecen una de esas familias típicas, en este caso francesas, que llegan a un pueblo donde la mayoría se conoce y esperan ser bien recibidos. Desde el principio, notamos algo extraño en ellos; le dan mucha importancia a actuar con normalidad, a que su hijo pase desapercibido, a que se integre.

La película intriga desde el principio; queremos saber qué está pasando, y las respuestas llegan muy pronto. Lo que importa aquí es el drama de Philémon, el protagonista de la historia, ese hijo peculiar de la familia, que tiene una inmensa necesidad de ser normal, de ser aceptado. Está cansado de un estilo de vida que lo atormenta. El conflicto estallará cuando conozca a Camila, su joven vecina, una adolescente como él.

Hasta ahora, nada original, solo un romance adolescente, pero sus diferencias, especialmente las de Philémon, serán el mayor obstáculo. Por un lado, ella quiere escapar de la rutina de un pueblo aburrido donde nunca pasa nada interesante ni emocionante. Y por otro lado, está Philémon, que quiere encajar, tener amigos y, claro, como buen adolescente con las hormonas revolucionadas, se enamora de esta chica guapa y quiere hacer lo que a todos nos encanta: bailar.

La película fue el primer largometraje de la cineasta francesa Céline Rouzet. El problema es que, desde su estreno hace tres años, la directora prácticamente no ha hecho nada más. Revisé su Instagram y no ha publicado nada desde finales del año pasado, y no vi ninguna señal de que esté trabajando en un nuevo proyecto. Desconozco el motivo, pero esta sequía podría tener muchas causas; quizás se esté tomando su tiempo antes de embarcarse en otro proyecto, o tal vez simplemente ya no tenga ganas de hacer nada, así de simple.

Vi una entrevista que dio durante la promoción de la película, y es sorprendente lo personal que es la historia para ella. Quizás te preguntes cómo es posible. Es ficción y fantasía; nada de eso ocurrió en la vida real. Ciertamente es ficción, pero a través de ella, narró aspectos de su vida familiar, inspirándose en su propia familia, en sí misma y, sobre todo, en su hermano, quien, como mencionó en la entrevista, sufre una enfermedad que le causó mucho rechazo durante su adolescencia.

Aquí es donde veo que quiere transmitir un mensaje claro. El miedo a lo desconocido y el rechazo sufrido por ser diferente, por tener una discapacidad, una enfermedad, etc., es lo que la cineasta quiso plasmar con esta historia, añadiendo un elemento fantástico que también se inscribe en el género de terror. Si ves el tráiler, entenderás a qué me refiero, pero prefiero no revelarlo aquí para no arruinar la experiencia a quienes no lo hayan visto.

El final no me convenció del todo. Todo sucede demasiado rápido y algunas escenas no encajaban bien. Yo habría hecho las cosas de otra manera, pero no es mi tipo de película, así que tengo que aceptar lo que el director ofrece.

Es una película de terror francesa, un drama adolescente con un toque de romance. Para mí, tiene buenos ingredientes y es entretenida. La prefiero a cualquier basura comercial de Hollywood. Sí, yo también la he visto, pero Hollywood me aburre tanto que ni siquiera me apetece recomendar las últimas películas que he visto de la capital del cine. Por eso prefiero traeros películas de otros lugares, aunque sé que a la mayoría no os gustan.
