Hey guys, I am back with "Obsession," the movie that's been dominating conversations everywhere. To be honest, I do not get enough free time to watch movies. When I do, I only watch if it's a good story, something that gives me goosebumps and stays in my mind for a long time. Obsession did exactly that. I can't believe it was made on a small budget, I'm truly impressed by the story from the beginning to end. As you can see as a proof that if you have enough potential then you will not need millions of dollars to make a movie that reaches people all over the world.
Spoilers ahead!
I have been feeling disturbed lately as many people misunderstood the concept of the movie, for that reason I wanted to clear it out. So, yeah spoilers ahead. If you don't want any spoilers then it's better to skip. Let's start! People think Obsession, is about a girl becoming too possessive of her boyfriend and people feeling sorry for the guy. But that's not how I saw the movie. From my point of view, Bear is the main culprit in the entire movie. I did not like him from the start. He is the main villain who started the problems, too self obsessed and made selfish choices, he is the one to blame who had ruined everyone's life around him. So, the movie is much deeper than simply blaming one emotional girl.
Bear knew how it was going to end and he kept thinking about himself only. He manipulated everyone, telling lies and made Nikki seem the bad person. Instead of taking responsibility, he was making things worse. He is an actual rage bait and I hated his character the most. I think that is exactly what the filmmakers wanted. So, Bear is the kind of character who keeps making terrible decisions and I got pulled into the story because of the frustration I have felt while I watched everything he does. The moment I hated the most when Nikki was asking for Help, but Bear didn't bother instead he asked, "What's so bad about being with me?". Like who would ask these kind of things in their right mind? He refused to let Nikki go, never truly regretting his actions until everyone's lives had been shattered.
Another character I disliked was Ian, he knew how Bear felt about Nikki but he remained silent. He didn't do anything about it, instead he tried to make Bear seem like a weirdo. If he had told everything as a friend then I think Bear would have avoided doing anything further. In the very first scene it was seen how Ian was acting weird as soon as he found Bear wants to date Nikki. So, I think he was not a good friend at all. He also interrupted the moment when Bear was about to confess to Nikki. Ian deliberately did everything. Everyone in the story had some sort of problems, as they did not know how to confront their feelings to the other person. All of them were lacking this in their characters. I think that's how people are in real life, we never say anything directly we prefer doing indirectly and give hints.
I have to praise the actors and actresses. They all gave performances that felt honest and believable. I must say Inde Navarrette gave her best performance, switching emotions in the blink of an eye and making every moment feel completely real. Whether it was sadness, love, anger or fear she nailed in each one of them. Didn't expect each actors and actresses to perform so well in a low budget movie. Their hard work is one of the biggest reasons why the movie feels so real.
However, I am happy for their success it has reached audiences across the world. As you can see great storytelling is more important than a huge budget. Such strong writing and acting, can make people easily connect with the movie, it doesn't matter where they are from. This movie depicts how one selfish person can damage many lives. It's not only about obsession of a girlfriend. It's about how lack of responsibility can destroy relationships which could leave everyone else to suffer, how one man's lies and selfishness is enough to destroy lives.
Overall, I truly enjoyed Obsession. I believe whatever happened to Bear, he deserved it. But Nikki was an innocent girl, she didn't deserve to be treated like that, she trusted Bear and he broke it. I think Bear never loved Nikki, because how can you watch someone go through hell when you love them? He didn't have the courage to end it all, he was still having a second thought in the end of the movie because he was selfish and a coward person. This movie made me angry at the right person. For me Bear will always remain the main villain, and I believe people who only see the story as a possessive girlfriend are missing the bigger picture. I would happily recommend watching it, but don't watch it with your kids, it's a R rating movie. There are many disturbing scenes. So, watch it at your own risk.
Rating: 100/100
