Comments and Opinion.
Zmora is a recently released Polish miniseries consisting of six episodes. Also known as The Torment (or El Calvario), it is a psychological crime thriller that follows Kama Kosowska, a disgraced journalist who returns to her hometown. Her arrival coincides with the unexpected reopening of the missing-persons case of Piotrek—her best friend from childhood—a mystery that has remained unsolved for three decades.
The story begins in the 1980s, with a narrative that weaves between the past and the present. We see the children and their interactions, and witness how a dark secret gradually takes shape—sparked by the disappearance of one of them—involving their parents and a web of lies designed to conceal a painful truth.
It is worth noting that, at times, the family drama and social conflict slow down the momentum of the criminal investigation. This can be a bit frustrating, as the plot unfolds quite slowly; one naturally wants to learn more, connect the dots, and understand the reasons behind the secrets and events depicted. I assume the intention is to build a sense of mystery to keep the viewer hooked—which is, after all, the point of this type of series—but I personally find the slow, gradual unraveling of the case a bit stressful! Haha
Conclusions:
The ending, however, is undoubtedly unexpected—the story takes a real turn. It’s an engaging series, though its progression is undeniably slow. Despite this measured pace, it remains compelling to watch, thanks to its settings and its "before-and-after" narrative structure; above all, the completely unexpected final stretch makes the wait well worth it.
I invite you to watch it and form your own opinions.
