July 9 marks the Independence Day of the Argentine Republic. It is a national holiday. In the city of Luján, in the province of Buenos Aires—a place we often visit by bike—we drove there this time to participate in the third edition of a half marathon. I wasn’t the one who ran; my partner @zutodoterreno did. Of course, we went to enjoy the event, and honestly
9 de julio, se conmemora el día de la independencia de la República Argentina. Es una fecha patria y por lo tanto es feriado nacional. En la ciudad de Luján provincia de Buenos Aires, donde con bastante asiduidad concurrimos en bicicleta, esta vez lo hicimos en auto, para participar de una media maratón en su tercera edición. No fui yo quien corrió, lo hizo mi compañera de vida @zutodoterreno. Por supuesto, fuimos a disfrutar del evento y la verdad con gratas sorpresas.
They call it Argentina’s largest charity run, and boy, was it ever. One of the requirements for participating was to bring non-perishable food items to help various organizations that provide meals to those most in need. Luján is about to celebrate its 400th anniversary, so just imagine all the stories that have unfolded in this place. As soon as you arrive, you can feel the energy—and even more so at these major sporting events.
Lo denominan la carrera solidaria más grande de la Argentina y vaya que así lo fue. Uno de los requisitos para participar de la misma, ir a llevar productos no perecederos, para luego ayudar a diferentes entidades que se encargan de dar de comer a los más necesitados. Luján está a nada de cumplir su 400 años, así que imagínense las historias que han pasado por este lugar. Cuando uno llega ya la energía se siente y mucho más en estos grandes eventos deportivos.
Our friend Braian, along with his girlfriend Sol, was kind enough to drive us there and spend a wonderful day with us. We arrived very early, as we always do at these events where there will be a lot of people, and picked up our kits, then set out to explore the inside of the church and drink some mate while we were at it.
El amigo Braian, junto a su novia Sol, tuvo la gentileza de llevarnos y compartir con nosotros un día maravilloso. Llegamos muy tempranos como acostumbramos a hacer siempre en estos eventos donde concurrirán muchas personas y retiramos el kit, para luego disponernos a recorrer la iglesia por dentro y tomar unos mates mientras tanto.
It was really cold all week, but the universe stepped in and gave us a holiday Thursday with perfect running weather—almost spring-like. We also met up with our 91-year-old friend, who came to show her support because she’s an icon for every Argentine athlete, especially those from Buenos Aires. She’s recovering from hip surgery and so couldn’t participate, but she was on stage singing the national anthem on this national holiday.
En la semana hizo mucho frío realmente, pero el universo se complotó y regaló un jueves feriados con una temperatura ideal para correr, casi primaveral. Nos encontramos también con nuestra amiga de 91 años, que fue a hacer presencia porque es un emblema para todo deportista argentino y sobre todo bonaerense. Ella viene de una operación de cadera y por lo tanto no pudo participar pero sí estuvo en el escenario cantando el himno nacional en esta fecha patria .
Every time I see an elderly person playing sports, I wonder what I'll look like at that age, and I'd like to take this opportunity to ask you: What do you think you'll look like at 91? Believe me, that day will come.
Cada vez que veo una persona de avanzada edad hacer deporte, me pregunto cómo me veré a esa edad y aprovecho para preguntarte a vos ¿Cómo te ves a los 91 años? Créeme, que ese día va a llegar.
It makes me so happy to be part of these crazy sporting events in Zuni, because even though I didn’t actually run, I experienced every moment as if I had. The event was supported by the municipality of Luján, which is why it rose to the occasion. There were celebrations everywhere, live bands playing, lots of gifts for the participants, and anyone could run—and there was so much more.
Me hace muy feliz acompañar estas locuras deportivas de Zuni, porque más allá que no participé corriendo, viví cada momento como si lo hubiese hecho. Un evento que tuvo el apoyo del municipio de Luján y es por eso que salió a la altura de la circunstancias. Fiestas por doquier, banda sonoras en vivos, muchos regalos para los participantes, cualquier persona podía correr y mucho más.
Meanwhile, our oldest son put on his No. 10 jersey and baked the classic pastries for these national holidays. Our oldest son, Genaro, is a genius.
Last but not least, the World Cup returns to our lives today with a fantastic match between Spain and Belgium. We’re looking forward to tomorrow, when Argentina plays Switzerland again. Although we want our national team to win, we’ll always cheer for good play and hope the best team wins. But as we always say, it’s soccer, and the best team—or the one that deserves to win—doesn’t always come out on top.

Mientras tanto, nuestro hijo mayor se puso la 10 y realizó los clásicos pastelitos de estas fechas patrias. Un genio nuestro hijo mayor Genaro.
Por último y no menos importante, el día de hoy vuelve el mundial a nuestras vidas con un partidazo, entre España y Bélgica. Esperando el día de mañana que juega nuevamente la Argentina frente a Suiza. Pese a que queremos que nuestra selección gane, siempre pregonaremos el buen juego y que gane el mejor. Aunque como siempre decimos, es fútbol y no siempre gana el mejor o el que se merece.
