Si el talento está, ¿qué falta? | If the talent is there, what’s missing?

In a previous post I talked about Argentine cycling. I was wondering why there are no Argentine riders in the Tour de France, for example. Because when we talk about the big international events, like the Vuelta a España, the Tour de France I just mentioned, the World Championships and a bunch of other international races, there are very few Latin American cyclists, and even fewer Argentines. Argentina is a rich country in every way, and of course that goes for sports too. Just look at football: it’s a huge supplier of raw talent for big international clubs. So why doesn’t the same thing happen in cycling? And this whole reflection comes from some posts I saw about Argentine athletes who have suffered, so to speak, from being abandoned by the institutions that are supposed to support them.

Back in April this year, the Argentine Road Championship was held in Río Cuarto, Córdoba, Argentina, and the guy who put on the elite champion’s jersey was Nicolás Tivani, from San Juan. So far, just another sports story, but what rubbed me the wrong way, and the reason I wanted to write this post, is how he and his teammates got to that race. Just a few days before the trip, the San Juan riders were told there was no money, no cash at all. A really hard blow for athletes who sometimes come from very humble backgrounds, and all because, due to a paperwork issue, the provincial federation didn’t have its documents in order to collect a subsidy that was supposed to come from the State. Every rider had to pay for their own travel, lodging and food; we’re talking about something around 500,000 pesos each. And of course, some of the kids were able to go and others weren’t.

Now, picture this situation. You train all year round, you get up early to go out for your long rides, and sometimes the weather doesn’t help: the cold, the wind, the heat. You simply eat whatever you’ve got, and when the most important race in the country comes around, maybe the most important of your life, they tell you that support isn’t going to happen. Do you guys really think athletes riding for teams in the Tour de France, for example, have a different diet than a guy from San Juan who trains on his own? Despite everything, the riders gave it their all in the races. For example, Tivani won the elite race after 160 km in the rain, at an incredible pace, finishing off a breakaway at the end, with a really impressive time of 3 hours and 31 minutes. In another discipline, the time trial, another San Juan rider, Mateo Kalejman, won the title again, covering 38 km at an average of over 50 km per hour. Over 50 km/h! Truly incredible. Personally, I think I could only hold that pace going downhill with a tailwind… and praying 😅.

That time around, San Juan’s medal haul was a big one: three golds, five silvers and three bronzes. The thing is, the talent is there, and even without getting any support, these athletes are hungry to win. Personally, I think that beyond the lack of support for these events, what’s really missing are structures that actually work. I don’t know if football has the ideal structures; I’d guess some clubs do, but with so much money involved, those structural problems sometimes go unnoticed. I’m talking about the clubs that take in these cyclists, where sometimes the training facilities aren’t good enough or aren’t properly maintained. And I also mean structure when, all of a sudden, an athlete needs psychological support and there’s nobody there to help them. That’s why these kids’ achievements deserve twice the applause, because despite all the ups and downs, they still get results.

While in Europe everyone’s talking about the latest aero bikes and the routes for the 2027 Tour de France, which is coming in hot, here we have champions who, before winning, had to do the math to see if they could even afford a place to stay. Honestly, I’m not saying this out of anger, but with pride, and also with a little bit of sadness, so to speak, because they truly deserve a bit more. So from this post, my humble tribute and deep respect to Tivani, to Kalejman, to all the San Juan cyclists, and to everyone who was left out and couldn’t make the trip. They’re part of this championship too. Cheers to everyone and, as I always say: let sport be part of your life! Have a great day.
