¡La pucha, que el ser humano es terriblemente jodido!, ¿no? La tecnología avanza y mejora en todos los aspectos de nuestra cotidianidad. Pero el vil metal, tener la primicia y la excusa que se te parezca, justifica meterte por los lugares que no deberías. La semana pasada hablamos de la gran victoria del joven ciclista francés en el Giro de Lombardía, el amigo Paul Seixas. Pero en ese evento, justo al inicio de la largada, sucedió algo realmente trascendental. Al final te cuento mi justificación de por qué no sirve estas acciones.

La pucha, human beings are terribly messed up, aren’t they? Technology moves forward and improves every aspect of our daily lives. But filthy money, getting the scoop and whatever excuse comes to mind, justifies getting into places you shouldn’t. Last week we talked about the great victory of the young French cyclist at the Tour of Lombardy, our friend Paul Seixas. But at that event, right at the start of the race, something truly significant happened. At the end, I’ll tell you my reasoning on why these actions are no use.

      Como transeúnte, como automovilista y también como ciclista, sabrás comprenderme, el nivel de adrenalina que se siente cuando un auto o un camión te pasa finito. Estos tipos están corriendo en un circuito supuestamente cerrado y una organización multimillonaria que lo acompaña para que todo salga perfecto. Por supuesto que también entiendo que puede existir un porcentaje de error. Pero cuando las personas que entorpecen al evento y la vida de los ciclistas son los mismos de la organización, sinceramente uno se queda sin palabras. Imaginate para personas comunes como yo, como vos, que un día salimos a trotar o hacer ciclismo y de repente nadie nos cuida. Solo el sentido común de las personas que manejan esos vehículos representa nuestra pseudoseguridad. Pero en estos eventos, donde los ciclistas van a terribles velocidades, se debería aumentar al máximo la seguridad de los mismos.

As a pedestrian, as a driver and also as a cyclist, you’ll understand me, the level of adrenaline you feel when a car or a truck passes you way too close. These guys are racing on a supposedly closed circuit, with a multimillion-dollar organization behind them so that everything goes perfectly. Of course I also understand there can be a margin of error. But when the people getting in the way of the event and of the cyclists’ lives are the organization’s own people, honestly, you’re left speechless. Imagine it for ordinary people like me, like you, who go out one day to jog or ride a bike and suddenly nobody is looking out for us. Only the common sense of the people driving those vehicles stands for our pseudo-safety. But at these events, where cyclists ride at terrible speeds, their safety should be raised to the maximum.

      Al no estar Pogacar en el pelotón, el que tomó la palabra fue Remco Evenepoel y expresó el sentimiento de la mayoría de los ciclistas. En eventos anteriores y también luego de esa manifestación, siguieron sucediendo accidentes causados por el hombre y ahora, la pregunta es... ¿Qué hacemos? Cualquier ciclista sueña con estar en algún equipo de tamaño envergadura y por supuesto que a veces baja la cabeza para seguir perteneciendo. Motivo por el cual, si bien esta protesta tuvo significancia porque se vio en todo el mundo, creo sinceramente que con eso no basta.

With Pogacar not in the peloton, the one who spoke up was Remco Evenepoel, and he expressed what most of the cyclists were feeling. In earlier events and also after that protest, man-made accidents kept happening, and now the question is... What do we do? Every cyclist dreams of being on a team of that size, and of course sometimes they keep their head down to keep belonging. That’s why, even though this protest was significant because it was seen all over the world, I honestly believe that’s not enough.

      No basta porque existe infinidades de intereses en el medio y cada uno defiende su cesta. Será la UCI la responsable de tomar el toro por las astas y proteger a la materia prima, y son los que verdaderamente hacen al espectáculo deportivo. Particularmente entiendo de que no depende solo de una entidad y que difícilmente se pueda mejorar esto si no se toma conciencia de la vida de las personas, de que esto es simplemente un deporte y que el negocio que existe en el medio no debería interferir. Ya lo sé... No te rías de mí. Creo en las utopías y ojalá en algún momento seamos más conscientes de eso. Sé que no va a suceder porque el negocio está primero, lamentablemente. Si Pogačar, Paul Seixas o Evenepoel deciden no ir, habrán otros ciclistas que sí estarán dispuestos a participar y el show continuará.

It’s not enough because there are countless interests in between, and everyone defends their own basket. It will be up to the UCI to take the bull by the horns and protect the raw material, the ones who truly make the sporting show. Personally, I understand that it doesn’t depend on just one entity, and that this can hardly improve unless people become aware of human lives, that this is simply a sport, and that the business in between shouldn’t interfere. I know, I know... Don’t laugh at me. I believe in utopias, and hopefully at some point we’ll be more aware of that. I know it won’t happen because, sadly, business comes first. If Pogačar, Paul Seixas or Evenepoel decide not to go, there will be other cyclists who are willing to take part, and the show will go on.

      Es bellísimo cuando en una bajada el ciclista entrega todo y pone en riesgo hasta su vida, por ganar la victoria, por el espectáculo, por la empresa que lo patrocinó, por los espectadores que estamos en todo el mundo observando ese momento, por lo que sea. El ciclista entrega su vida en cada bajada, en cada curva y me parece que mínimamente se debería considerar algo de respeto. No es el mensaje que un deporte tiene que emanar, el de entregar tu vida por el show. Diferente es entregar la vida metafóricamente, entrenando para ser mejor cada día.

Como ciclista, no quería dejar pasar esta reflexión y es por eso que lo expuse de esta manera. Y ustedes, estimados amigos, ¿qué piensan sobre la cuestión?

It’s beautiful when, on a descent, the cyclist gives everything and even puts his life at risk, to win, for the show, for the company that sponsored him, for the spectators all over the world watching that moment, for whatever reason. The cyclist puts his life on the line on every descent, on every corner, and I think that, at the very least, some respect should be considered. That’s not the message a sport should give off, giving your life for the show. It’s different to give your life metaphorically, training to be better every day. As a cyclist, I didn’t want to let this reflection go by, and that’s why I put it this way. And you, dear friends, what do you think about the matter?
