Despite my passion for cycling, I have to admit that running is a sport I enjoy immensely. I can explain it to you in a thousand ways, but unless you experience it yourself, you won’t be able to understand me. To give you an idea, you finish your run and head to the shower; as the warm water runs over your body, you feel alive and completely fulfilled. You’ve activated all your internal systems—and, of course, very few sports can achieve that. Running is a fundamental sport, and we all need to do it. If you’ve never done it before, I suggest you start with walks and then move on to running.
As many of you know, Zuni is going to run the 2027 Saoconi Cross-Country Race, and of course, she’s always running as the second runner in her training sessions. She’s already completed the necessary long runs of over 30 km, and through December she’ll continue maintaining her fitness with intervals in Zone 2, interspersed with bursts in Zones 3 and 4, and of course she’s keeping up her physical conditioning through Pol Sports. If there’s one thing she excels at, it’s her discipline with nutrition, which is why—as long as she maintains her basic training levels—I believe she’ll be in excellent shape for the race. I don’t know if I’ll be able to join her, but for now, I’m sticking to my training. As I said, running is a foundational sport, and we need to make a conscious effort to practice it. In cycling, for example, I feel like it gives me great lung capacity, and my breathing stays steady even when the going gets tough. That’s thanks to running.
In my case, it’s hard to stay on track with my diet, since everyday events sometimes lead me to eat a little too much. This week was our friend “El Negro” Braian’s birthday—he’s a guy—and of course we were enjoying some delicious homemade pizzas he made himself, washed down with a Fernet and Coke, as is customary. Every birthday has cake, so we had some of that, too. The problem is that it happens late in the evening, and that takes its toll later when you go to sleep with a full stomach—and whatever isn’t burned off ends up in places you don’t want it to. But hey, as my mom used to say, “Go cry in the field,” and keep working out to burn off the extra calories.
My friends at the gym are a little lost right now, but luckily, with the old pro—my friend Óscar—we’re still working out three times a week for just an hour each time. If there’s one thing we’ve learned over the years in this field, it’s that nothing happens overnight. Being consistent and persistent is what helps you improve day by day. Sometimes you feel like you’re taking a step back, but deep down, believe me, you’re actually growing. Obstacles are part of growth. That’s how you have to look at it—or at least that’s how I try to.
Thanks for stopping by, and remember: we should always stay connected to sports.
Have a great day 🧉
