I had a neighborhood grocery store for more than 15 years in the city of Ezeiza, Buenos Aires province, Argentina. And there was one date you got ready for in every possible way. It was like, all of a sudden, I had to have everything in stock and stay open 24/7, no matter what. The week before Mother’s Day is something truly spectacular for all of us who sell, one way or another, around that time. I came to the conclusion that people sell even more than for the December holidays. Because a mother is a mother... And for her, everything. And when I say everything, I mean everything. Even going into debt to make a wish or a surprise come true...
My posts always tell what happens on Mother’s Day itself, but this time I want to talk about the week leading up to Mother’s Day. All the back-and-forth, people rushing everywhere... It even reminds me of those moments right before Argentina’s national team plays in a World Cup. People are in a hurry, eager to get things: the meat, the clothes, the cake and everything that comes with organizing an event. And it’s not just any event... It’s Mother’s Day.
And the turning point of this post on my blog is: what do you give a mother? In my childhood, living in the countryside out in Paraje Álamos, Goya, Corrientes, I don’t remember my father going crazy trying to buy some kind of gift for my mom. Maybe he did, but honestly, I don’t remember. As I grew up in the city of Goya, in another family, I noticed that the man of the house always gave her useful things for the home. A stove, a washing machine, a TV, chairs, and I could go on... But for some time now, it’s kind of frowned upon to give those things to a mother, and here comes the painful question: why have Mother’s Day gifts changed, or why do they tend to change?
I have no doubt that we’re indoctrinated by the market. They persuade us to consume every single day and to melt our income away in debts everywhere. Because a washing machine is something every home needs, and it’s something for work. We’re supposed to give her something just for her, something only she gets to enjoy. My mother would have been happy if my father had given her a new washing machine to make the chores easier. But nowadays, no... Honestly, dear friends, I feel the market plants these ways of thinking in us so that, besides having all the things a home should have, we also buy other things from other markets. What do you think?
It’s true that some of us men wanted to kill two birds with one stone and bought something useful for the house. But let’s not go to the other extreme either... I feel that you should give what you truly feel. If I think the little electric oven isn’t working well, and I want to give her an electric oven with a grill that she once told me she’d like to have, I should do it. People say maybe a perfume would be something more personal for her. I don’t want to read comments telling me to do both. Because obviously, if you can, you do.
My idea with this post is to spark some kind of debate on the subject. My stance may be a bit radical, but the intention is for you to feel encouraged to join the tertulia. Now, is it really necessary to give something material? Who came up with this idea that you have to give something to show some kind of affection? They made us believe that when you give something material, something has to come back to you by default. I think I’m already walking along the ledge, and I don’t want anyone to push me, because, honestly, the wall is really high 🫢.
*In some countries, people call their parents “jefe” or “jefa” (boss), I think it’s in Mexico. When I heard it, I liked it, because in a way I think that’s true. Now, that jefa is very different from, for example, the head of a department at the company where you work. Still, and with this I’ll wrap up, I feel that a mother deserves a lot, and when I say a lot, I truly mean a lot. Of every kind... Both material and, of course, emotional. Talking about mom, for any human being, I think is indescribable. I feel that everything you do for her, and not just on this day, is fine. As long as you do it with love... If you want, give whatever you like (a washing machine too) and give her lots of love that day and every day of your life.
Happy Mother’s Day to everyone.*
