In times of war... Play Ball! And a story in which a group of women accepted a manager's daring proposal to do something that, until then, had never been done before: a women's baseball league. With a cast of beautiful women led by Geena Davis (Dottie Hinson), Lori Petty (Kit Keller), and Madonna herself in all her splendor and beauty, “A League of Their Own” offers us a lovely story of brave women who venture into the exciting world of baseball, and in which several subplots unfold from the main storyline, showing us the love and rivalry between two sisters: Dottie and Kit.

Y una historia en la que un grupo de mujeres se unieron a la osada oferta de un gerente para llevar a cabo algo que hasta ese momento era un evento nunca antes visto: una liga de béisbol femenina. Con un elenco de hermosas mujeres encabezadas por Geena Davis (Dottie Hinson), Lori Petty (Kit Keller) y la misma Madonna en pleno brillo y belleza, "A League of their own" nos trae una bonita historia de valientes mujeres que incursionan en el apasionante mundo del béisbol, y en donde varias tramas se desarrollan desde el plano principal que nos muestra el amor y la rivalidad entre dos hermanas: Dottie y Kit.
The success of a good team starts right from the bench, and that’s how Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks) is tasked with turning beauty queens into queens of the field. I think this character’s arc throughout the film is very well done, starting as a man of little interest who’s initially cold toward the idea of coaching a women’s baseball team, only to later become deeply involved in the story’s main plot. It’s worth noting that the film features the line “No crying in baseball,” which Jimmy himself says to one of his players after she makes a mistake on the field—a line that became memorable for capturing the passion experienced on the field.
In this story, Dottie and Kit shows us the very special bond that can exist between sisters who share the same passion: baseball. But in life, it’s not all about natural talent for sports, and this is where Dottie’s character also shines through her intelligence—she refuses to let anything or anyone separate her from the deep love she feels for her little sister. As for Kit, you can sense her drive and desire to compete with her own sister, yet without ever losing the respect and affection she’s always felt for her. In many scenes in this movie where the two manage to talk, you can see the maturity of one and the rebelliousness of the other—but without ever forgetting what matters most: their sisterly love.
El éxito de un buen equipo nace desde el mismo banquillo, y es así como Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks) es el encargado de llevar a las reinas de la belleza a convertirse en las reinas del campo. La transición de este personaje a través de la película me parece muy buena, empezando con un hombre de poco interés y actitud fría a la idea de manejar un equipo de béisbol de mujeres para luego llegar a estar involucrado en la trama principal de la historia. Cabe destacar que en esta película se hace mención de la frase "En el béisbol no se llora", la cual es usada por el mismo Jimmy hacia una de sus jugadoras después de haber cometido un error en el campo y que se hizo memorable por la idea de proyectar la pasión que se vive en el terreno de juego.
Dottie y Kit nos muestra dentro de esta historia la relación tan especial que puede existir entre hermanas que comparten una misma pasión: el béisbol. Pero en la vida no todo se trata de un talento natural por el deporte, y aquí es donde el personaje de Dottie se muestra también desde su inteligencia para no dejar que nada ni nadie la aparte de ese gran amor que siente por su hermanita. Por parte de Kit, se percibe ese ímpetu y esas ganas de competir con su misma hermana pero sin sobrepasar el respeto y cariño que siempre ha sentido por ella. En muchas escenas de esta película en donde ambas logran hablar, se nota la madurez de una y la rebeldía de otra pero sin olvidar lo más importante: el amor de hermanas.
From my point of view, this movie shows what society had long condemned with both force and indifference: the sight of a woman trying to do or participate in something that is usually done by men. That’s why I like the idea it conveys right from the start: with the men off at war, would that be the end of baseball? Obviously, someone had to step in to save the day, and that’s what we see at the beginning—a man who took a huge risk, which resulted in a resounding success that ended up filling the stadiums and winning over the hearts of the fans.
"A League of Their Own" features a great soundtrack and several flashback scenes that draw us right in from the very first minutes of the movie. My favorite scene? If we’re talking comedy, I’d obviously pick the one where Jimmy yells, “There’s no crying in baseball,” but if there’s one scene that I find particularly meaningful, it’s the final conversation between Dottie and Kit right after the championship game. Overall, there’s not a single dull moment in this movie, as it strikes a great balance between comedy and drama. My favorite character is Kit because, even though I’ve always been the oldest brother in my family, I’m really curious to know how younger siblings feel when they try to emulate their older siblings without losing that sibling bond.
So far, I can say that I've seen many movies based on extraordinary stories about teams and players, but even so, I feel that "A League of Their Own" holds a very special and unique place among those movies that I never get tired of watching and would never hesitate to recommend.
Desde mi punto de vista, esta película muestra lo que por algún tiempo la sociedad condenaba con fuerza e indiferencia, y es el hecho de ver a una mujer tratando de hacer o participar en algo que por lo general lo hacen los hombres. Por eso me gusta la idea que transmite desde un inicio ya que al estar los hombres en la guerra, ¿Sería el fin del béisbol? Obviamente alguien tenía que salir al rescate y eso es lo que también se muestra al inicio, a un hombre que se jugo una carta bastante pesada y que dió como resultado un total éxito que terminó llenando los estadios y ganándose el corazón de la fanaticada.
"A league of their own" cuenta con una buena banda sonora y varias escenas que a modo de flashback nos meten de lleno desde los primeros minutos de la película. ¿Mi escena favorita? Si nos vamos por el lado de la comedia pues obviamente tomaría la de Jimmy gritando "En el béisbol no se llora", pero si hay una escena que me parece muy significativa precisamente es la última conversación que tienen Dottie y Kit justo después del juego final. De forma general, no hay desperdicio alguno en esta película pues también se ve una buena mezcla entre la comedia y el drama. Mi personaje favorito es Kit pues aunque siempre en mi familia he sido el hermano mayor, me causa mucha curiosidad saber cómo se sienten los hermanos menores al tratar de imitar a sus hermanos mayores sin perder el amor fraternal.
Hasta ahora puedo afirmar que he visto muchas películas basadas en historias extraordinarias de equipos y jugadores, pero aún así siento que "A League of their own" tiene un lugar muy especial y apartado entre esas películas que no me cansaría de ver y que nunca dudaría en recomendar.
