Every artist is born with the hope and dream of one day becoming the best of all, and, without a doubt, some manage to stay at the top of their game, but few are born to remain forever at the pinnacle of history—like a singer who may no longer be with us, but who managed to give us a gift that goes far beyond any superlative: a masterpiece turned into a song that not only reveals the pure essence of a musical genius but also offers us a reflection on life in the purest rock-and-roll style. “The Show Must Go On” by Queen is not simply a song; in its context, it defies all categories. It’s a song you can love and, at the same time, one that can break your heart.
There are many stories surrounding Freddie Mercury and his health at the time he brought this song to life, but in the lyrics and the performance we find a man who seems to be physically falling apart and reaching that point of reflection that, at some moment in life, leads us to question our own existence—and this is something Freddie makes very clear from the very first lines of the song with the question, “What are we living for?” From start to finish, the song is a torrent of emotions that seem to well up from the depths of the soul, pouring everything into a performance that is simply unparalleled.
"The Show Must Go On" is neither a farewell nor a surrender in the face of the end. Throughout the entire song, I sense a singer who doesn’t complain or agonize over the possible end of his life; rather, I perceive a man who has come to terms with the reality of who we are and has therefore decided to say goodbye just as he always knew how to perform on stage—giving his all and proving that he is one of the greatest singers who has ever lived. Here’s a prime example: this very song, which I have no doubt we’ll still be talking about and sharing in a very special way 50 or 60 years from now. “My makeup may be flaking but my smile still stays on”—that’s how we’ll always remember you, our friend Freddie, with that unique talent you never stopped showcasing, and through which so many of us today identify with the message of your songs.
From my own experience, I’d like to highlight something a friend once told me: “Some people give in to the fear of leaving this world, while others acknowledge this reality and therefore decide to live until their very last breath with total dedication and intensity.” I confess that this is a sentiment that has brought me to tears more than once because of how much it has made me suffer, but in this song I always find the reason not to lose heart and to keep moving forward. “The show must go on” gives me a very special energy that becomes a life lesson, pulling me out of those negative thoughts where everything seems to be heading toward a sad ending. But as Freddie Mercury so aptly puts it, “I’m never giving in, on with the show.”
Thank you for taking the time to read this post.
See you soon.
SPANISH VERSION
What are we living for?".
Pero como bien lo dice Freddie Mercury "I'm never giving in, on with the show".
