Welcome, Hivers, to this new post. This week is Bullying Prevention Week, so that’s what we’ll be talking about on the show. We’ll connect via Telegram so we can discuss this very important and timely topic. There are lots of movies out there, but I’ve chosen two that touch on this issue without being too heavy-handed: The DUFF and Lilo & Stitch. We’ll analyze these movies, and I look forward to reading your posts.

The movie follows a young woman who discovers she is the DUFF, the Designated Ugly Fat Friend. We see how that label begins to influence her, even though she denies it, and how it affects her relationships without her wanting to talk about it.
It’s a movie that shows us how bullying situations can start unintentionally and silently affect the people around us. Likewise, we see how support can transform us and how the relationships around us allow us to become the best versions of ourselves. This leads us to ask:
How much does what others say to us affect us?
Do we hide our feelings until we explode, or can we talk about our emotions surrounded by people who care about us?
When do we realize that everyone else is also struggling with their own insecurities?
The story follows two sisters, Nani and Lilo, who have lost their parents and are trying to stay close. At that moment, Nani manages to convince Lilo to adopt a “puppy”: Stitch, who turns out to be an alien wanted for his destructive tendencies.
In this movie, we see a more childish form of bullying from Lilo’s classmates, who reject her, forcing her to seek support elsewhere. Although at first it seems like a purely childish issue, we can see the full impact that bullying has on young children’s social relationships. So I ask:
When we were children, was there a time when you felt so rejected by your peers that you sought support elsewhere?
Were you free to speak your mind as a child, or were you afraid that saying something would upset others? How much of that still affects you as an adult?
What have you decided to do with what you learned as a child?
