I keep noticing many fail at the dust threshold or are completely unaware, since it mostly affects smaller accounts I figured I'd make a mention of it to help them grow on hive.
I've also noticed that a lot of people seem to be completely unaware of shortform content on Hive, for instance @peakd's snaps or @ecency's waves, a bit weird considering they're very active posting and interacting with comments but seem to be completely missing from shortform. About the dust threshold, and there seemed to be some confusion regarding it last time I talked to someone about it, so I've double-checked and wanted to make things clear.
Curation rewards are not dust-thresholded, that means, if you vote on a post or comment, as long as that post or comment gets past the threshold ($0.02 - it fluctuates depending on price and currently it's probably the highest its ever been in terms of voting power) you will receive curation rewards even if just 0.001.
Thus the important thing is that a post or comment gets to $0.02, then everyone who's voted for it get a payout, even if the minimum 0.001 curation rewards.
However, if you vote for posts or comments which are usually the likely suspects, that don't make it to $0.02, you're basically just wasting voting power.
Now I'm not saying don't vote, a vote is often used as a form of acknowledgement that you've read a reply, etc, or agreement, etc, but if you suspect the odds that someone else will vote it after you, maybe give it a small vote in terms of vote strength. Like 1%, etc. The vote will still register and land on the comment, but if it doesn't pay out then you're not risking burning more voting mana when you can use the voting mana on posts or comments already past the threshold.
I still see a lot of people voting on comments where let's say they give them a 50-100% vote and it lands at $0.005 or $0.01 and no one else votes on it after pushing it through the threshold. At these prices that means some votes can forfeit up to 0.4 hive approximately and still not get paid out due to the threshold, which you know, if your plan here is to grow, that's 0.04 hive after 1 year by just curating and holding hp if you do it efficiently.
This is also a reason why we created commentrewarder, so authors don't have to waste too much voting power on comments but can instead forfeit a % of their posts' rewards by directing it with tiny votes that don't burn much voting power.
I understand this is a bit nitpicky and most may not care or understand, but for those who do maybe they'll appreciate being reminded about this as it may help them grow their stake.
