A first look at Chameleon Twist - A charming even if peculiar platformer for the Nintendo 64 [ENG/ESP]

Yep, this is that one game that toys with the idea of playing as a chameleon that can use its long tongue to eat multiple enemies at once - only that the chameleon doesn't even look like one (although this is kind of explained by the intro when starting a new game, as a normal chameleon jumps into a hat and appears into the world you play at with this orb-like appearance).

Chameleon Twist is, as you might have noticed, very much a 3D platformer from the 90s, only that instead of just having a jump, you can also do quite a few things using the chameleon's tongue for movement, something the very first level will test you with.

image.png

For example, sending your tongue into a pole will freeze you a moment then pull you over there, making for a way to clear holes, although you can also press A again after the tongue hooked to instead rotate around the axis of what you grabbed. It makes for quite a neat trick if you're replaying a stage for faster times (as every stage has their time tracked on a leaderboard), but it's also a trick you'll need for some crowns placed in platforms only reachable through this.

image.png

Another move that's technically tied to your tongue (not just visually, but also not usable if you are holding enemies on your mouth) is to press Z while moving to extend upwards with your tongue. You can do it from a standstill, but doing it while moving will make the tongue act like a pole vault where jumping with A at the right moment will let you leap forward high up.

image.png

...And of course, most small enemies can be disposed of by taking them up with the tongue, turning your head bigger with the more you picked up (although also making you run slower), and then being able to spit all the enemies you swallowed like a machinegun.

That last detail is also tested by the boss of the first world, as you have to defeat him by swallowing the butterflies that spawn nearby and shooting them over and over until you get him pushed off the ledge.

image.png

And all of that is basically taught to you through the first stage, as there's five other stages awaiting, although you can choose to play them all or to play only four stages, as beating Stage 2/3 unlocks Stage 4/5, and beating either unlocks Stage 6. The first stage can be beat in like 2 minutes or so if you're optimal, but the other ones take a few more minutes.

Although if you want to test your controls outside of the main stages, there's a Training option on the main menu that acts as mini challenges that also keep track of your best time. There's 5 rooms but all of them also happen to test those basic skills you're tasked to test at the first world, only that in a single room and with the ability to get really low times on them if you're REALLY good.

image.png

But of course, on the main stages, while a couple are fairly simple, there's always at least one spot holding a crown where you're meant to use the chameleon's abilities as well as you can, like the thumbnail screenshot where you can either use the tongue to make way through the blue path or use the tongue twist to reach alternate platforms holding crowns, or here below where the path is also crowded with ants and you can make your way out to the next room...or use the ants you put into your mouth to shoot away the other ants spawning right in front or the crown.

image.png

The tongue twist move is also kind of hinted at you to be important here with a room that requires you to use it to get across the other area, making a big enemy (that can't be grabbed by your tongue) on a platform trip over when your tongue passes below it, having to do this for that same enemy appearing in other rooms after that (with poles nearby to trip them over through the twist, and small enemies you can swallow to shoot at them while tripped over), until having to fight a boss that is basically that but against an even bigger enemy, a single pole at the center, and having to spit the ants she spawns at her when tripped over five times.

image.png

The third stage, Bomb Land, goes for a different gimmick, focusing on the ability you have to spit enemies at anything that you can't actually pick up with your tongue, specifically having to eat up enemies to shoot them at walking grenades in order to destroy a block on the floor for a switch, shoot them at cracked blocks to make a path ahead, shoot them at bombs that clear the floor from this red damaging effect, and even the boss itself is basically a game of picking up the bombs it leaves behind and spit them at the segments behind its head - on top of having to dodge when it tries to charge at you.

image.png

image.png

The game itself seems to be fairly short at least judging by the average stage length (assuming you don't spend extra time trying to figure out a room's puzzle to progress or to grab crowns, let alone trying to get every crown in every stage), but even then, the unique idea and ways the game makes you use those peculiar abilities to earn your progress (and crowns) is pretty fun. The linearity at the levels (and ability to track your best times) also lends itself into trying to replay stages to aim for faster times if that's your cup of tea.

Perhaps another day when I sit through the last three levels (again, there's only six levels total) I could talk about this one again and what they entailed - what type of platforming challenges they frequented, particular crowns that took me a while to reach, and what dealing with the bosses is like. But on the note of crowns, somehow on every visit where I think I've been throrough with my search, I always end up 1 to 3 crowns short from the total, so that's another thing to maybe look into later.

All in all, a pretty "Nintendo 64 game" overall, somewhat simplistic in nature and even with the visual design, but has that charm from a game of that era in the way the enviroments aren't really meant to be a cohesive "place", as more so feeling like the game knows that its just a game, so the places you visit can look in many silly ways regardless of what their name indicates.

Thanks for reading, and see you next time.
