The small space in my closet.

Today, my husband mentioned wanting to buy me a pair of Adidas sneakers—a very comfortable model I’ve had my eye on for a while—but I keep putting off the purchase because food prices are skyrocketing every day, so shoes just aren't a priority.

Anyway, I've been thinking for a while about not buying any new clothes for quite some time and instead donating the items I no longer need—the ones that just clutter up my closet and get in the way whenever I’m looking for something comfortable to wear. Dressing "elegantly" has become a chore, given the heat and my growing indifference toward formal attire, which feels less and less necessary these days.

The truth is I didn't own many clothes in my younger years, I wasn't particularly vain, nor did I obsess over every new fashion trend. However, after a few years—once I started working in environments filled with meetings and business trips—I felt compelled to put a little more effort into my appearance to fit in with the corporate culture.

The result was that the clothing racks ended up piled high with items I’d barely worn once... all while my husband complained that his own closet space was becoming increasingly cramped, small, and uncomfortable.

So,finally,I have a closet bursting with clothes I’m sick of—garments that fill me with guilt over the money I once spent so unnecessarily. To make matters worse, I used to lie to my husband about the actual price I’d paid; after all, men think everything is expensive, whereas for us, accumulating clothes is a deeply feminine, holistic necessity.

And if only it were just about clothes—think of all the things we acquire throughout our lives, becoming sentimentally attached to them with such misplaced tenderness. We struggle to grasp that they are merely the byproducts of our emotional clutter. So many drawers filled with nostalgic feelings—all for nothing.

I’m not going to be too hard on myself about it, but I think I’ve finally found the energy to confront the conflict of interest posed by a closet that no longer reflects who I am—because I realize I started filling it years ago, and I’m no longer the same person who put that first item on the pile. In the end, I think a single change of clothes will be enough to reach the other side and be welcomed in grand style through the only door that lets you in.

Closets change with our tastes, our means, our opportunities, and the passage of time—and with the things we ultimately decide we no longer need.

Although—and I really mean this—I still haven't ruled out buying those Adidas sneakers... because they are incredibly comfortable.

Namaste.

Espanish Version

Namaste.
