What do I see? What do I feel about this image? What do I remember? What do I think I know about this image?

Upon seeing this image, I saw a beautiful elderly lady whose candid, lovely, and delicate face conveys charisma and a profound peace.

The first thing I felt when I saw it was nostalgia, a lot of nostalgia. I immediately thought of my beloved grandmother, María de Jesús García Medina, a lady in every sense of the word and the sweetest and most patient woman I have ever known. My grandmother died in 1988; today marks 38 years since her passing, and without exaggeration, I mourn her as if her death were yesterday.

Resigning myself to her death is a chapter of my life I haven't been able to fully close, because I loved her and still love her so much. Seeing her suffer unspeakably from colon cancer until she finally lost the battle has been one of the hardest and most painful experiences I've ever had to endure, and not just me, but also my mother, my aunts, and the rest of my cousins, because she loved all her grandchildren equally and gave us all so much genuine and unparalleled love.

My memories from as far back as I can remember until I was 19, when I had the privilege of having her physically in my life, are filled with my grandmother "Chua," as we affectionately called her in the family, with all her unconditional love and devotion. Coincidentally, her room had a window very similar to the one in the picture, and she styled her hair in that way, with a single braid to one side or two braids, one on each side, with her long, pearly white hair.

Her hair was also styled in a turban up, another favorite hairstyle. The thing is, in all three of the aforementioned ways, and even with her hair down, fresh from the shower, my beloved grandmother looked simply beautiful.

I also remember how she spoiled us all. She knew what each of her grandchildren liked to eat and made sure there was always rice pudding, sweet breads, and sugarcane juice in the kitchen to please everyone's tastes. From the money my uncles gave her for food and groceries, she always set aside a few cents to buy us treats and spoil us in the late afternoon and evening after dinner.

I loved my grandmother so much and I miss her terribly. I can't understand how so many elderly Venezuelans are living in such heartbreaking loneliness today. I speak specifically about Venezuela because it's a situation that is palpable every day, and I personally think it's one of the worst consequences of the mass migration from my country.

I don't understand how children and grandchildren have emigrated from the country, leaving their parents and grandparents completely "alone" or in the care of a third party to whom they send money to "feed and care for" them.

Some of these people fulfill their obligations, but that's all it is: fulfilling a commitment or a pre-arranged "business." True loving dedication to these grandparents, who have been left not only physically abandoned, but worse, emotionally abandoned, is practically nonexistent.

Screenshot_20250708-112959_3.png

Some grandparents have not only raised their own children, but also their grandchildren, and yet, these grandchildren, now that they have emigrated, are unable to make a phone call to them or, failing that, to answer any calls they may have. This display of a lack of love and evident disinterest subjects them to a profound loneliness that has nothing to do with how many people they have around them, but rather with the bottomless abyss that overwhelms them.

They can even be surrounded by many people and still feel completely alone because their loved ones are absent, and their physical absence is the least of it; it's an emotional absence that wounds, that kills slowly.

Some of these elderly adults are physically and organically stable; however, their health deteriorates because the loneliness and neglect they experience from their loved ones devastates them in every tissue, every cell, every fiber of their being. Their illnesses have no physical cause; they are emotional and manifest themselves as a result of the abandonment in which they have been immersed.

I don't rule out that the beautiful old woman in the image is one of those grandmothers who opens the window of her lonely house and is inspired to look into the distance at the horizon with the sun illuminating her face and a warm smile (even if it's fake) to see if in it they can find the faces of their loved ones and see in them a smile that gives them back the will to live and the essence to their sad and abandoned soul.

My daily prayers, of course, include them and the aforementioned situation, which I would love to eradicate with a magic wand. However, I must say that those I pray for most (without intending to judge) are those loved ones who emigrated and left these grandparents literally "alone" or "alone even when surrounded by others."

May God touch their hearts and help them understand that money provides purchasing power and perhaps a better quality of life, but it doesn't provide the human warmth, love, and true care that our beloved grandparents need, who are now "truly dead," since being forgotten means the real death of a person.

That concludes my contribution, and I'm pleased to invite @emily2021 and @zhanavic69 to observe, analyze, and describe this image proposed by the aforementioned initiative, which speaks for itself.

Photographs are my sole property, captured with my Go 2024 tech device.
