📷 Finally Back: Mushrooms in the Tauber Valley

Hello dear friends,

For a long time this year, there were absolutely no mushrooms to be seen here in the Tauber Valley. And so far, the haul in my main hunting grounds has also been extremely meager. I’m happy to repeat myself here: The Tauber Valley is dry. Very dry. It always has been. It’s one of the driest regions in Germany. And of course, that has a particularly noticeable effect in a year like this one. The day before yesterday, I was out deep in the Spessart Forest with the kids. There, the situation regarding mushrooms looked quite different. But even here in our area, I’ve at least been able to find a few species by now—albeit still very sparsely scattered. The weather remains relatively warm, and ground frost isn’t on the horizon just yet. So there’s still a chance for new mushroom growth here in the Tauber Valley as well. I haven’t seen any of the typical late-fall mushrooms yet. I’ve seen them in the Spessart, but not in the Tauber Valley.

Hallo liebe Freunde,

The earthstar—presumably a sessile earthstar—pictured on the cover is a species that’s easy to photograph. However, this mushroom is not Essaber._

🍄 🍄 🍄 🍄

A porcini mushroom right next to some fly agaric mushrooms. That's a classic combination. I picked the porcini and ate it. Delicious!

🍄 🍄 🍄 🍄

Ein Steinpilz direkt neben Fliegenpilzen. Das ist eine klassische Kombination. Den Steinpilz habe ich geernet und verzehrt. Lecker!

The shaggy ink cap is also edible and tastes very good when fried. However, the mushrooms must be young and should not have started to turn into ink.

🍄 🍄 🍄 🍄

I'm not sure, but these are probably inky caps. I'm just taking pictures of them, because they're problematic when combined with alcohol.

🍄 🍄 🍄 🍄

In one spot, the larch bolete is once again growing in abundance. The mushroom is edible, but not everyone can tolerate it. I leave it where it is, but I'm very happy that I was able to find such beautiful specimens.

🍄 🍄 🍄 🍄

Luckily, I was able to find plenty of chanterelles in early summer. I’ve already eaten the false chanterelle (Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca). It didn’t make me sick. Today, it’s described as mildly poisonous. In any case, you’re not missing out on anything culinary-wise if you leave the mushroom in the forest.

🍄 🍄 🍄 🍄

The same applies to green-leaved sulfur caps. In our old mushroom guide, they are still classified as inedible. Today, they are considered poisonous mushrooms. We find this mushroom in abundance around here.

🍄 🍄 🍄 🍄

The slimy spike cap (Gomphidius glutinosus) is a delicious edible mushroom. However, it is covered with a slimy skin that should be removed first.

🍄 🍄 🍄 🍄

At the end of the tour, I take a break at one of my favorite spots.

Ha, after a year with almost no mushrooms, finding them out in the Spessart must feel like a real win. That porcini sounds lovely, did the humid soil deep in the forest make all the difference?

  • @mers(73)· 3d

Wow!

What an interesting mushroom adventure, mate!

Glad you're finding mushrooms again despite the dry weather. The earthstar really caught my attention with its unusual appearance. I'd probably stick to photographing mushrooms rather than eating them since I'm not confident identifying them, haha.

Great photos, and hopefully more mushrooms will appear soon!

It sounds really tough finding anything in such a dry region. I always find it fascinating how a nearby forest like the Spessart can look completely different just a short distance away.

After a year with almost no mushrooms in the Tauber Valley, finally finding some out in the Spessart with the kids must have felt like a proper win.

It looks like you made the right move to go deep into the forest to find some humid soil, as mushrooms like it! And looking at your photos, you had a very successful fungi hunt... 😃 So many different varieties in one forest... As you were speaking about the dry valley, imagine how it looks here in Southern Spain with all the sun and rocky soil... 😀 We are happy when we spot 1 mushroom after a heavy rain, and I think I never saw more than 2-3 types in a day... and that was when we travelled inland... 😃

Great photos, btw! I like that bicycle wide shot!

Some of the species are the first I've seen, the first picture and the red mushroom are strange and beautiful.

  • That's a lot of mushrooms grow in your country, I'm amazed of some mushrooms, it's really new to my eyes!

  • @ruffatotmeee(78)· 4d

Ohh, those are amazing find, but do you eat them raw? That porcini? Right on the spot where you find them?

  • @tahastories1(72)· 4d

Such a wide range of variety you encountered.
