The Tomb of Diomedes - Watercolors on Paper
Hello to all my dear Hivers friends and welcome back to my blog. The painting I’m sharing today depicts a cave located on an island in the Ionian Sea. This cave, a popular destination for travelers, is, according to Greek legend, the tomb of one of ancient Greece’s bravest and wisest heroes, Diomedes. During the Trojan War, Diomedes managed to wound two gods fighting on the side of the Trojans, Aphrodite and Ares. Thanks to his alliance with Odysseus, he succeeded in conquering Troy. Upon his victorious return to Argos, he discovered his wife’s betrayal and, overcome with grief, took refuge in Italy, in the region of Daunia, now known as Puglia. Diomedes is unanimously considered the founder of Western civilization; he founded many cities and taught people how to domesticate horses and navigate. It was during a voyage with his trusted companions that Diomedes hurled three large boulders into the sea, which transformed into the three Tremiti Islands. But unfortunately, during a storm at sea, he drowned, and his loyal companions buried him in a cave on the island of San Nicola in the Tremiti archipelago.
Legend has it that his companions, overcome with grief at the loss of their beloved leader, transformed into Diomedee or Albatrosses, large seabirds that nest on that island and, at night, when there is no moon, emit cries that sound like the cries of newborn babies.
I experienced the calls of the Diomedee firsthand, listening to them at night from the cliffs overlooking the sea, and I must say they are impressive, even though they sound like those of newborns. So, for my upcoming exhibition on the Tremiti Islands—or the Diomedee—I decided to create this watercolor depicting the cave and the albatrosses circling Diomedes’ tomb.
The sea is present even inside the cave; it encloses the remains of the Greek hero forever. I’m sharing all the steps of the creative process with you, and I send my best regards to everyone. Armando.

La tomba di Diomede - acquarelli su carta
Ciao a tutti cari amici Hivers e bentornati sul mio blog. Il dipinto che condivido oggi è la rappresentazione di una caverna che si trova su un'isola del mar Ionio. Questa caverna, oggetto di molte visite di viaggiatori, secondo la leggenda greca è la tomba di uno dei più valorosi e saggi eroi dell'antica Grecia, Diomede. Nella guerra contro Troia, Diomede riesce a ferire due Dei schierati con i troiani, Afrodite ed Ares. Grazie al sodalizio con Ulisse, riesce a conquistare Troia. Al ritorno vittorioso ad Argo, scopre il tradimento della moglie e in preda al dolore si rifugia in Italia, presso la Daunia, la Puglia. Diomede è considerato unanimamente il promotore della civilizzazione occidentale, egli fondò molte città ed insegnò ad addomesticare i cavalli ed a navigare. Proprio durante la navigazione insieme ad i suoi fidati compagni, Diomede scagliò in mare tre grandi massi che si trasformarono nelle tre isole Tremiti. Ma purtroppo durante una tempesta marina egli morì per annegamento ed i suoi fedeli compagni lo seppellirono proprio in una caverna sull'isola di San Nicola nelle Tremiti. La leggenda racconta che i compagni in preda al dolore per la perdita del loro amato capo si trasformarono in Diomedee o Albatro, grandi uccelli marini che nidificano su quell'isola e di notte, in assenza di luna emettono dei versi che sembrano pianti di neonati.
Ho avuto la prova dei versi delle Diomedee, ascoltandoli di notte, sugli strapiombi di falesie sul mare, e devo dire che sono impressionanti per quanto sembrino quelli di neonati. Così per la mia prossima mostra sulle isole Tremiti o Diomedee ho deciso di realizzare questo acquarello che raffigura la caverna e gli Albatro che volteggiano intorno alla tomba di Diomede. Il mare è presente anche dentro la caverna, esso racchiude i resti dell'eroe greco per sempre. Vi lascio tutti gli steps del processo creativo ed i miei migliori saluti a tutti. Armando.
