One day may not be enough to break a curse, but it is enough to experience what one has been waiting a year for, to see relatives who are still far away, or to return to the human world, even if only for a short while.

People approach them and look at them, not with fear, but for amusement. They are the perfect and most spine chilling decorations in the city. There is no other place quite like it; there are no more hair-raising macabre smiles than these, nor any more tormented or suffering faces that capture so well the festival of the dead and those who return from the other world on that day.
Children and adults wander through the aisles, marvelling at the spectacular figures, some of which are for sale, on display in that large shop. Amongst the many decorations and accessories, they have placed these almost life-size, inanimate figures. There is much talk of Halloween all over the world, in some places more than others, but there are certain hidden truths that people will never know
Characters and dolls serve as decorations that can even be bought, but others will remain in place until they are packed away in huge boxes and stowed away until the following year. No one suspects the reason behind the realism of those faces, or the key ingredient that makes them so striking and perfect. They attract attention without meaning to and can only be found in one shop, a very large one, where people flock from all over the city to see them and do their shopping.
No one knows where they come from, whether they are from here or from another world; only the shopkeepers see or sense strange things when the place is completely deserted. Certain sounds that sound more like sighs, those that stem from the resignation of times long past, when the dead could rest in peace and journey to the afterlife, their souls simply moving on.
Sighs that encapsulate an eternal sadness that goes beyond comprehension and defies explanation. Some speak of an ancient spell cast by a powerful being from the other side, someone who wished to make the festival feel real and vivid. A curse that trapped young souls, who had not yet walked the path towards the light, within decorations delicately designed and handcrafted by this dark artisan.
The truth is that these figures change their expression just one day a year, on Halloween, when they seem to lose their realism, their power and their terror; they no longer inspire fear but rather disappointment. On that one day, they lose that essential ingredient, those trapped souls and the souls are free to travel the world, searching for what is lost, visiting what no longer exists. Time has passed as years have turned into centuries, but they will continue in the same cycle.
They will never fade, nor break or grow old; these decorations remain intact thanks to the ingredient of trapped souls. Stored away in boxes days after the celebration, where the souls have already returned, unable to escape the fate that binds them to every face, every doll, every sigh of desolation.
