Greetings, fellow nature lovers! I wish you all an excellent and blessed week with your loved ones. I am happy to share with you a striking plant that I hadn’t seen for many years. During my childhood, one of these grew in our backyard, and it always caught my attention because of the curious spikes on its trunk. After all this time, I encountered this plant again—known in Venezuela as the Jabillo Hura crepitans.

I was running some errands with my son when we spotted it and decided to pause. I briefly told him how, as a child, I used to play around this tree—specifically with its spikes. We walked closer to examine the trunk and the spikes, and we even took a few photographs. The tree is quite large, with a trunk that splits into two main branches, all of which are covered in spikes.

After spending several minutes observing the trunk, we moved toward the lower branches to take a closer look at the leaves; they are a beautiful shade of green, heart-shaped, with rounded edges. As we continued to explore the plant, we came across some structures that we initially assumed were its fruit. However, after doing some research online, I discovered that they are actually the male flowers. Further along, we found another type of flower—the female flower—which, once fertilized, produces a fruit often called "dynamite" (or an "exploding" fruit). When it dries out, it bursts open, scattering its seeds to give rise to new plants. To be honest, I had completely forgotten about the flowers; as a child, we were only interested in playing with the spikes! The male flower is quite striking, featuring a cluster of red inflorescences that cover the stalk.
