Hello there, internet folks! How are you doing? Today I want to tell you about a book I recently discovered called *Criaturas de la Noche* (Creatures of the Night) by the Venezuelan writer Israel Centeno. I love it because it brings together seven paranormal tales rooted in the folklore and legends of our country, Venezuela—specifically those surrounding Mount El Ávila, or *Guaraira Repano* (its Indigenous name), an imposing mountain that encircles the entire Caracas valley like a protective titan.

Hoy quiero hablarles de un libro que encontré recientemente, se llama Criaturas de la Noche, por el escritor venezolano Israel Centeno, me encanta porque en él están condensados siete relatos de tipo paranormal que forman parte del folcklore y leyendas de nuestro país, Venezuela, específicamente del cerro El Avila o como es su nombre indígena “Guaraira Repano” se trata de una montaña imponente que rodea todo el valle de Caracas como si se tratase de un titán protector.
Each story is told with a highly compelling narrative style—as if, rather than reading, you were hearing the tales directly from the protagonists' own lips; the author’s mastery of language is evident. I was particularly struck by one of the creatures mentioned: a yellow dog that stalks the capital's population. Yet this is no ordinary dog; it possesses lycanthropic qualities and prowls the city with the aim of recruiting people into its infernal army.
Cada relato está contado con una narrativa muy convincente, como si en lugar de estar leyendo, estuvieses oyendo los relatos directamente de los labios de los protagonistas, se nota que el autor es muy hábil en su lenguaje. Por otra parte me llamó mucho la atención un de las criaturas que menciona, se trata de una perra amarilla que acecha a la población capitalina, pero no es una perra cualquiera, tiene cualidades licántropas, y merodea la ciudad con la intención de unirlos a su ejército infernal.
However, the central point—and the one that struck me most about the entire book—concerns Dr. Gottfried Knoche. He was well known in the village of Galipán as "The Vampire," as his solitary habits and work as an embalmer repelled others. Yet Dr. Knoche—who was German, incidentally, and a close friend of Dr. José Gregorio Hernández (now officially canonized)—always worked for the poor and needy. He was a man of science, however, and was obsessed with the idea of preserving corpses in good condition for many years; for this reason, he was often seen transporting bodies from the hospital where he worked to his estate. Through this work, he succeeded in developing an extraordinary formula that he used to embalm his entire family. Sadly, today only the ruins of his laboratory remain.
Pero el punto central y el que más me llamó la atención de todo el libro es el que hace alusión al doctor Gottfried Knoche, quién fue muy conocido en el pueblo de Galipán como “El Vampiro” ya que su hábitos solitarios aunado a sus prácticas como embalsamador repelían a los demás, pero el doctor Knoche, que por cierto era alemán, fue muy amigo del doctor José Gregorio Hernández (hoy en día oficialmente canonizado) siempre trabajó por los pobres y necesitados, pero era un hombre de ciencias y lo que lo obsesionaba era la idea de poder preservar cadáveres en buen estado durante muchos años, y por esta razón lo veían transportar cadáveres desde el hospital donde trabajaba hasta su hacienda. De esta manera logró desarrollar una fórmula extraordinaria con la cuál embalsamó a toda su familia. Lamentablemente hoy en día solo quedan las ruinas de su laboratorio.
It is a fascinating read, steeped in mysticism and terror—for one truly shudders at the mere thought of being stalked by some of those creatures of the night that stand in such stark contrast to the capital's urban landscape. I believe books like this deserve greater recognition, both nationally and internationally.
Es una lectura fascinante llena de misticismo y terror porque vaya que uno se estremece de terror nada más de imaginar ser acechado por algunas de esas criaturas de la noche que contrastan con el paisaje urbano de la capital. Pienso que libros como este deberían ser más conocidos nacional e internacionalmente.
