China funding UK research and sending it to Beijing's spies, MI5 warns

"More than 100 academics linked to British institutions have unwittingly assisted China's espionage operations against the UK via a front company working for its intelligence and security services, MI5 has warned. In the highly unusual public alert, the UK's internal security service warned universities and academics that continuing ties with China General Technology Research Institute (CGTRI) could ultimately lead to criminal charges for aiding a foreign state. [...] UK academics have contributed to CGTRI-funded projects on topics including AI, cyber-security, covert communications systems and steganography, which means hiding a secret message or file inside an ordinary message or object [...] The security alert said that many academic institutions and individuals will have engaged with the CGTRI "in good faith" because the link back to Chinese state security had been "obfuscated""

--- Phhh... If you work together with a Chinese entity, particularly including projects on cyber-security or covert communication, you can bet that your research results will go directly to the CCP. In good faith here either means total idiocy or treason.

"A spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in London said the accusation was "imaginary and purely fabricated"."

Spain and China are cosying up - to the anger of many in the EU

"Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has visited China's President Xi Jinping four times in as many years. He's urged the EU as a whole to improve relations with China since Donald Trump's re-election two years ago."

--- Moron. But sadly, he's not the only European politician using Trump as an excuse for cozying up with a commie dictatorship.

"Realpolitik is a thing. If I get closer to China because that attracts Chinese investment and bolsters my economy, then that is strategically more appealing than supporting allies who are also only looking out for themselves."

--- Yeah, because the CCP is so trustworthy. & they will be truly grateful for you giving them access to the EU. & they definitely will not stab you in the back at the first opportunity.

"Spanish society now has a far more favourable attitude towards China than towards the US, its traditional ally. According to a Pew Research Center poll published this summer, 54% of Spaniards said they had a favourable opinion of China compared to 30% who viewed the US favourably"

--- Morons, the lot of them. Although you can partially blame Trump's stupid policies for that.

Beijing warns of retaliation if Europe imposes curbs on Chinese businesses

"China will “respond firmly” if the EU introduces restrictions on Chinese businesses or products, the Chinese commerce ministry said in a statement late Tuesday, according to a CNBC translation of Mandarin. The ministry said such actions, while China and the EU are engaged in trade talks, would “seriously undermine mutual trust”"

--- I only hope that the EU doesn't trust China, anyway. &, about the "firm response": That's to be expected. Nothing to be afraid of.

Inside the Ukrainian military unit training fighters from China

"Many Ukrainian military units have their own brands and public presences as they compete with each other for funding and new recruits. But in this case, the commander of the unit, which focuses on reconnaissance, asked that its identity be withheld because of the sensitivity of the Chinese volunteers project."

--- Not sure that's a good idea.

"Some people worry that the Chinese soldiers in Ukraine could provide useful military intelligence to Beijing. An officer from another brigade said he would “think twice” before taking someone from China."

--- Exactly. Even if they are only in frontline drone units, they could be there to familiarise themselves with drone tactics. Which then could be used in case of a war with Taiwan.

US sees Chinese invasion of Taiwan unlikely in 2027 despite 2027 timeline

"The main reasons include delays in military readiness amid the Chinese Communist Party’s anti-corruption campaign as well as Beijing's eagerness to see the results of Taiwan’s 2028 election, which some Chinese officials hope could usher in a government more amenable to bringing the island under Chinese control"

--- Well, I don't know. Military readiness is one thing, but emperor Xi's urges quite another. If he feels his time is running out, he will order an invasion even if the military tells him it's not ready.
