[ENG] I had promised myself a solid bike ride this week, and yesterday I finally pulled it off. The weather was hit-or-miss, but I managed to thread the needle and find a wide enough weather window, though I narrowly escaped getting drenched right out of the gate. Pure coincidence delayed my departure by a few minutes: while prepping the bike and checking tire pressures, I realized my electric pump was completely dead. I quickly plugged it in to top it up, and in those few minutes, a rainstorm swept directly over Mons. Had the pump been charged, I would have already been out on the road getting soaked.

[ENG] A quick look at the weather radar prompted me to head south, where I had the best shot at dodging the rain bands moving swiftly across Belgium. I rode toward the French border without actually crossing over. At one point, I was riding along a road that literally forms the borderline: Belgium sits on one side of the street, while France is on the other. Residents there can literally peer into their foreign neighbors' living room windows across the road!

[ENG] The loop turned out to be fairly undulating, serving up a few nice climbs early on. Later, just as I assumed the return leg would be smooth sailing downhill, I ran into a short, punchy 11% cobbled climb. Surprisingly, it wasn't too bad; what really rattled my bones was a subsequent 1.5-kilometer cobblestone sector. I stumbled onto it entirely by accident, having completely forgotten it existed—even though I had the questionable pleasure of riding it a few years back. Had it not served as a direct shortcut back home, I definitely would have turned around and taken a paved detour.

Thank you for you miticulous description of your ride. Out of curiosity: are you an engineer or a doctor or an accountant?
