After being away for a few days due to personal matters, I’ve decided to get back in the swing of things with one of my favorite communities and their terrifying initiatives. This time, they’re bringing us [Halloween 2026 with Art and Stories in Spooky Zone! 🎃 Initiative](https://peakd.com/hive-196487/@zonadeescalofrio/halloween -2026-with-art-and-stories-in-spooky-zone-initiative-es-en), which also came courtesy of my wonderful friends @popurri and @issymarie2, who were kind enough to invite me to participate—for which I’m grateful. So, following their example, I’m inviting my friends @actioncats and @annafenix. Now that the intro is out of the way, let’s get to my terrifying story.
The Halloween Girl
The long-awaited night of Halloween had arrived; that October 31st was terrifyingly unforgettable for the González family… But let’s start at the beginning. The González family had emigrated from their home country, Venezuela, from a small town where Christian traditions were deeply rooted, so they didn’t celebrate Halloween; they had an adorable little girl about 3 years old named Irina; it was just the three of them against the world, and they had moved to McMullen, Alabama, near the Appalachian Mountains, where there weren’t many people; they preferred it that way to keep a low profile, since they didn’t want to draw attention to themselves.
That night, as was their custom, they had an early dinner and put little Irina to bed. Unlike the other children in the small town, she wouldn’t be dressing up or going out to go “trick-or-treating” at the few houses in town. Although there were few residents, many relatives and friends had come to visit that night; the bustle was unusual. Mom and Dad, as they usually did after putting their little girl to bed, went to their room to catch up on their daily routines; they were already almost falling into a deep sleep when they felt someone knocking on their front door very softly, yet firmly…
Both remained silent, waiting for the brief “knock knock!” to sound again, when it repeated itself, but this time more insistently. Dad, seeing that it was almost midnight and that the commotion had long since died down, thought it might be a drunk or something similar, so he grabbed his baseball bat—which he kept on hand for such unexpected occasions—and went out, followed by his terrified wife, right behind him. As he peered through the peephole in the door, he could see a beautiful little girl, wearing a little dress full of antique lace and tiny black shoes that sparkled in the moonlight; her big green eyes stood out against her pale face. She wasn’t wearing a coat—which caught his attention even more, since it was snowing unusually outside at that hour, especially since the climate there was usually warmer.
Dad stopped dead in his tracks; he couldn’t understand how that little girl was out alone at that hour of the night. Mom pushed her husband aside and saw the pale little girl at the mercy of the cold; instantly, her maternal instinct kicked in, and she flung the door wide open. By the time they opened it, Even Dad, still suspicious, looked around in all directions, expecting someone else to jump out from the bushes, but to his amazement, no one came out. So Mom took charge and asked the little girl what she wanted; she just whispered, “Trick or treat.” Since they didn’t celebrate Halloween, they didn’t have any candy to give her, so they decided to give her an apple they had in the kitchen.
The strange little girl, upon seeing this, frowned in annoyance and, with a look that didn’t seem like that of a child, glared at them with a malice they couldn’t fathom in such a young girl, then quickly walked away from their front door. The Gonzalezes, deeply unsettled, didn’t dare ask the girl any more questions; instead, with a strong chill running down their spines, they closed all the doors and windows of their house, went to check on their little Irina—who was sleeping peacefully—and sighed with relief. The next morning, Mom and Dad got up and went to wake Irina, but to their surprise, their little girl wasn’t in her bed; instead, there was that apple with a small bite taken out of it, and next to it, on a sheet of drawing paper, was written, “trick or...”
The Gonzalezes, beside themselves, called the police and their neighbors because their little Irina was nowhere to be found; friends and strangers alike began searching for her, and no matter how hard they looked, Irina didn’t turn up… Only after searching for a long time did they find, by the local river, a little girl’s dress covered in antique lace, along with a pair of shiny black shoes, and next to them, another piece of drawing paper that read “Candy”…
There are stories that seem like they’re made up, but they actually happen… This is my entry, dear friends! Best wishes to all of you!
