It seems to be an important and essential requirement, and many of us can say with certainty that at some point in our lives we’ve said, “I’m ready.” We recognize that it’s a process—a path you can carve out for yourself to reach a destination with the success you desire. Among the variety of methods and ideologies, the common factor usually points toward what we want, and we don’t think as much about preparation—something that should be the main foundation upon which we must have a clear and defined stance in order to understand that preparation is continuous and progressive as long as we never stop growing and moving forward throughout our lives.
How do you know when you’re truly ready? Obviously, the first thing that comes to mind is the level of knowledge and skill we possess, but if we look at things from a more human perspective, the question also revolves around how we feel when we’re ready—or not. The fact is, through our emotions we can convey a message linked to what we do or don’t know about something specific—something that isn’t necessarily linear or applicable in the same way for everyone. One of the most common reactions we see is fear, whether because we don’t know something or because we have the knowledge but don’t know how to convey it, thereby opening the door to other emotions as well.

Fear is not a definitive answer to the question of how little preparation we have. Even with all the knowledge and experience we can acquire, fear is still present, and yet that doesn’t mean you know absolutely nothing. Rather, fear is an internal response that we must learn to listen to, and the more aware we are of it, the easier it will be for us to manage it—especially when we have to speak or teach based on what we know. That’s why it’s also wrong to expect or believe that those who become good teachers, instructors, or speakers don’t feel fear, since what has allowed them to control and manage it to their advantage has been precisely their preparation.
On a broader level, life itself can lead us into situations where we feel we know a lot and, in others, very little—which is both normal and necessary. To be honest, our lives aren’t long enough to get us up to speed on everything that’s happening around us right now, so it’s reasonable that we feel prepared for some things and not for others. Having a clear and realistic perspective also gives us the peace of mind and confidence to know that it’s okay to say, “I’m not ready for that,” and that instead of feeling embarrassed or guilty, we can see it as a starting point for exploring new things in our lives.

There is no absolute blueprint for preparation, just as there is no template for our emotions. If we say that preparation is the foundation of a path, it need not be perfectly identical to another’s, even when we are pursuing a common good. I emphasize all those things that, as human beings, enrich our lives and about which we must make our own decisions. This reminds me of the example of preparing a good meal or a specific dish: there are basic ingredients that you cannot omit or substitute, while others are up to your discretion—as long as they do not alter the dish’s core essence. The lesson? Well, for us, there are fundamentals that we simply must not omit or change, but it is within our power to add that original touch that gives our actions their unique character.
All of this makes me think and wonder about what preparation really means in our lives. How would you illustrate it? Surely that can also offer a glimpse of what we cannot see but can sense through our emotions. The connection between what we know and what we feel is more special than we can put into words, and in my opinion, it’s something we must prepare for every day so that we never stop pursuing what gives true meaning and purpose to our existence.
