¿Puede una película cambiar tu perspectiva sobre algún tema de la vida? Realmente sí, y aunque no esté basado en hechos reales ciertamente la trama puede envolverte en el papel de cada uno de los personajes principales y más si estás haciendo frente a una grave enfermedad. "Still Alice" es una película que roza entre lo sensible que podemos ser ante un enemigo que de pronto aparece y empieza a robarte, no solo la vida, sino también los momentos y recuerdos de quienes forman parte importante en ella. Se trata de la vida de una profesora universitaria llamada Alice Howland (Julianne Moore) que se entera de lo que considero la peor de todas las enfermedades: Alzheimer.
"Still Alice" nos muestra el rango general de lo que implica sufrir algo como el Alzheimer y no solo por lo que puede afectar de manera directa sino de como la familia también sufre las terribles consecuencias. Etapas de negación, preocupación, miedo y resignación son las que en cada escena nos muestran a una Alice cada vez más afectada por su enfermedad. Incluso ella misma ante la triste realidad que afronta asume que habría sido mejor si en vez de Alzheimer hubiera sido cáncer, demostrando que no está preparada para semejante reto y es entendible ya que nadie está preparado para enfermarse y mucho menos desde esa magnitud que prácticamente día a día se va llevando parte de lo que por mucho tiempo ha sido. De hecho, para Alice el peso y la culpa llegan a ser mayores al saber que en el caso de sus hijos quienes también podrían heredar dicha enfermedad.
Can a movie change your perspective on a certain aspect of life? It really can, and even if it isn’t based on real events, the plot can certainly draw you into the role of each of the main characters—especially if you’re facing a serious illness. "Still Alice" is a movie that explores just how vulnerable we can be in the face of an enemy that suddenly appears and begins to steal not only your life, but also the moments and memories of those who play an important role in it. It tells the story of a college professor named Alice Howland (Julianne Moore) who learns she has what I consider to be the worst of all diseases: Alzheimer’s.
"Still Alice" shows us the full scope of what it means to suffer from a disease like Alzheimer’s—not only in terms of how it directly affects the patient, but also how the family suffers its terrible consequences. Stages of denial, worry, fear, and resignation are depicted in each scene, showing us an Alice who is increasingly affected by her illness. Even she herself, faced with the sad reality she’s confronting, assumes it would have been better if it had been cancer instead of Alzheimer’s, showing that she isn’t prepared for such a challenge—and this is understandable, since no one is prepared to get sick, much less with a disease of this magnitude that, practically day by day, takes away a part of who she has long been. In fact, for Alice, the burden and guilt become even greater when she realizes that her children could also inherit this disease.
La película muestra las maneras desde las que cada uno de nosotros pudiéramos afrontar esta difícil experiencia y como el entorno familiar se ve afectado por esto. Entre los hijos de Alice, la menor es la que toma un rol particular. Lydia Howland (Kristen Stewart) es una joven con sueños de triunfo en las obras teatrales, algo que su madre no puede ver con buenos ojos y que por el contrario desea que su hija vaya a la universidad y asegure su futuro. Por otra parte, vemos a un esposo que parece tomarse las cosas con cierta frialdad pero que muy en el fondo se siente herido al ver a su esposa prácticamente desmoronarse poco a poco. Jhon Howland (Alec Baldwin) quiere pensar que las cosas de algún modo pueden marchar bien, sabiendo que su compañera tiene una enfermedad que ya no tiene marcha atrás.
Como siempre, me gusta destacar una escena que marca la diferenciación dentro de la historia de la película. En este caso, me quedo con la parte en la que Alice ya con una enfermedad avanzada y con la dignidad de profesora universitaria bastante maltratada logra dar un discurso al cual considero como un triunfo para ella y en nombre de tantas víctimas que hacen frente al Alzheimer. Me parece una bonita referencia que toca los sentimientos de cualquier persona que en su justa apreciación reconoce la lucha y las batallas que hoy muchos como la misma Alice deben asumir. También hay una escena en la que ya Alice muy al final ni siquiera reconoce el lugar a donde solía ir para comer helado con su esposo, dejando un mensaje claro y a la vez desgarrador.
The film shows the ways in which each of us might cope with this difficult experience and how the family environment is affected by it. Among Alice’s children, the youngest plays a particularly significant role. Lydia Howland (Kristen Stewart) is a young woman who dreams of success in theater—something her mother does not approve of; on the contrary, she wants her daughter to go to college and secure her future. On the other hand, we see a husband who seems to take things in stride but who, deep down, feels hurt as he watches his wife gradually fall apart. John Howland (Alec Baldwin) wants to believe that things can somehow turn out all right, knowing that his wife has an incurable disease.
As always, I like to highlight a scene that stands out in the film’s narrative. In this case, I’ll single out the part where Alice—already in the advanced stages of the disease and with her dignity as a college professor severely compromised—manages to deliver a speech that I consider a triumph for her and on behalf of the many victims who are battling Alzheimer’s. I think it’s a beautiful moment that touches the heart of anyone who, with fair judgment, recognizes the struggles and battles that many people—like Alice herself—must face today. There’s also a scene near the very end where Alice no longer even recognizes the place where she used to go for ice cream with her husband, leaving a message that is both clear and heartbreaking.
Reconozco que a través de esta película pude conocer un poco más sobre lo que es el Alzheimer y todo el daño que este puede traer. Por un tiempo pensé que el cáncer era la enfermedad más terrible de la cual alguien podría morir pero después de ver Still Alice mi punto de vista cambia totalmente. Saber que cada día tu mente se empieza a vaciar es algo que transmite desdicha y tristeza, y como en cuestión de poco tiempo la persona va perdiendo su sentido de propiedad y de ser una persona totalmente independiente para los hábitos básicos de la vida. Desde mi reflexión, incluso me atrevo a decir que quienes padecen de Alzheimer enfrentan una batalla algo injusta por el hecho de que ni siquiera pueden comprender el daño que esta enfermedad les ha estado causando de forma mortal y silenciosa.
Desde mi punto de vista la película es un tanto cruda por hacer honor a una enfermedad que incluso puede ser peor pero por la trama principal la recomiendo con la certeza de que en algún punto lograrás reflexionar un poco más sobre la vida misma. "Still Alice" es un sorbo de oxígeno que nos hace ver la realidad de un cruel enemigo pero también nos presenta un tema que nos puede llevar a valorar nuestra vida misma con mayor interés y comprensión.
I admit that through this movie I was able to learn a little more about what Alzheimer’s is and all the damage it can cause. For a while, I thought cancer was the most terrible disease anyone could die from, but after watching Still Alice, my perspective has completely changed. Knowing that your mind begins to fade away every day is something that brings misery and sadness, and in a short time, the person loses their sense of self and their ability to be fully independent in the basic activities of daily life. Based on my reflections, I would even go so far as to say that those suffering from Alzheimer’s face a somewhat unfair battle, given that they cannot even comprehend the damage this disease has been causing them—a damage that is both fatal and silent.
From my perspective, the film is somewhat raw in its portrayal of a disease that can be even worse, but because of the main plot, I recommend it, confident that at some point it will make you reflect a little more on life itself. “Still Alice” is a breath of fresh air that makes us see the reality of a cruel enemy, but it also presents a theme that can lead us to appreciate our own lives with greater interest and understanding.
