Me ocurrió mientras dormía.
A couple of weeks ago, I clearly remember having a very interesting experience. It happened while I was sleeping. I dreamed that I was with a group of people (all strangers) and we were talking about something related to a party. Suddenly, a girl stood up and, in a reaction that was completely out of context, started saying, “It’s time to go. 5… 4… 3… 2… 1…” and the moment she said that, the alarm on my phone started ringing. It was 5:30 in the morning, the time I usually get up to go to work. I admit that at first I didn’t pay much attention to it, but later that day I started thinking about what had happened. What happened? How could my brain have put all that together?
It all seemed to me as if my brain had timed the scene from my dream to coincide exactly with the moment the alarm would go off. Even if it had been later—assuming the possibility that I might have overslept and not heard my phone—it’s still amazing because it means that, in a matter of seconds, everything in my mind came together to create something that would wake me up. I know that for a long time I’ve had certain dreams in which I’m aware of what’s happening, and so I try to handle them differently than I would in reality, but in this case, it’s as if my brain had acted on its own and done something I’d never experienced before.
My mom used to say, “You have to sleep so your brain can rest,” and to a certain extent that makes sense given what sleep does for the body—but it doesn’t necessarily mean the brain literally stops working. We sleep, but our brain doesn’t stop working. It’s simply a machine that, no matter how many advances and discoveries we make, will never cease to amaze us. On this topic, I recently read an article that highlighted a point to consider regarding our bedtime habits. It mentioned that it’s not a good idea to leave your phone too close to where you sleep, since your brain is aware that the device is there and it can even influence certain mental processes while you sleep.
I’m sure many people will have similar experiences—or even more impressive ones than the one I’m describing—which reveals a rather compelling truth: we know very little about everything our brain is capable of achieving and generating within us. It may be too complex for us to fully grasp, but when we go through situations that leave us practically speechless, we can also open the door to a fascinating discovery that each of us can make about ourselves. I’m sure there are many things that can go unnoticed by our conscious mind while we remain oblivious to what our mind is doing “without telling us.” If that’s the case, what other things can we achieve through our own minds?
It’s possible that the best answer isn’t out there somewhere, but has actually been with you or me all along. It’s probably just us who believe we can’t do or achieve something, but it’s been proven time and again that the limits and capabilities of our brains surpass every degree and superlative aspect. I have no doubt whatsoever that the most powerful weapon that could possibly exist lies within us, and how wonderful it is to be able to grasp the magnitude of everything we could achieve in our lives. For even with all that we can see today, I’m certain there are still greater and more marvelous things within a master mind that never stops innovating. They’re like secrets within our brains that we hope to discover and fully understand.
