Paz interior: un regalo anhelado // Inner peace: a longed-for gift

I once heard about someone who was diagnosed with a disorder that basically kept him from sleeping. After several tests, it turned out that it was all a buildup of anger and stress that he had experienced over many years. The strange thing is that, upon learning this, that person said that if he could go back in time, he would probably make the same decisions—but with one small yet very significant difference: taking the time to cultivate inner peace. Perhaps some might think that eliminating problems makes things easier, but the truth is that every day we continue to expose ourselves to situations that simply rob us of our peace. What is the real key?

Peace is not a place we can all reach, and it becomes even easier to attain when you understand that it’s not about living without any difficulties. In fact, someone might project a calm and serene demeanor but still lack that inner peace, which, in my view, is the primary source on which we should focus our attention. I once heard someone say, “Between having peace and being right, I prefer the former,” and that automatically makes it clear that it’s entirely up to you whether you cultivate your own peace or give in to a situation that may even come hand in hand with stress and despair. This is how we come to understand that peace is not a special gift that only a few can develop, nor is it something that lies beyond our reach.

What is the price of inner peace? For some, there’s always that one thing missing that would finally give them the peace they need, but even for those who already have everything, that peace of mind doesn’t seem to come. If we relate peace to the protection we may have, it’s interesting how many people go beyond the limit and, even when they feel overprotected, realize they aren’t at peace. If you have few possessions, you allude to this lack of peace, and after getting what you longed for, you then realize that peace doesn’t depend on the things we have. On both sides, the key is knowing how to manage the present and not letting anxiety about the future or frustration over certain past mistakes end up condemning you to a pace of life where there doesn’t seem to be even a small space for tranquility.

What is that moment when you truly find peace? In my case, I discovered a long time ago how good it makes me feel to listen to music while I work at home. I’m not one of those people who thinks peace equals absolute silence; rather, I believe that doing what you long to do should fill you with immense inner peace. I recognize that being in touch with nature is an element that easily triggers that harmony deep within our emotions, and although this has been thoroughly proven and confirmed, some people still don’t dare to give themselves the chance to go for a walk in the morning—or, why not, visit a park or the countryside on the weekend? After all, if we have time for things that don’t bring us as much peace, why not invest in what actually contributes to our well-being?

Ironically, we all want peace, but the world is becoming less and less peaceful. If you take a look at what’s around us, you’ll see how everything seems designed precisely to make us believe that inner peace is like that missing link that has never been found. Perhaps we can talk about and explore everything related to mental and emotional peace, but how hard it is for us to enjoy such moments in our lives on a consistent basis. Can you imagine a world at complete peace? What would our days be like every time we wake up? Well, if that beautiful idea has found its way into our hearts, it’s because it’s not an impossible dream but a reality we can all achieve.
