A cloudy morning might not be the best sign to start the week, but it is the perfect time to connect with those songs that transport us to the past and make our present a time for reflection. And boy, when we talk about a song like “Dust in the Wind,” we’re heading back to the twilight of the ’70s, which left us with high-caliber musical gems like “Hotel California.” What is the main message of “Dust in the Wind”? First and foremost, it’s worth highlighting that classic touch from the American rock band Kansas, because the lyrics aren’t just any lyrics—they essentially point to the reason for our existence, how brief our lives can be, and how we can be as fragile and fleeting as dust itself.
"Dust in the Wind" is one of the many songs my grandparents used to listen to on the radio. What’s interesting is that they never learned English, but they did develop a taste for and admiration of these songs. What did they like about the song if they practically didn’t understand the meaning of the lyrics? “It sounds good,” was a short yet compelling answer—so how can you argue with something like that? But I understand the concept because ever since I was a child, I’ve liked songs in English even without knowing the lyrics—as if the sound of the drums or the guitar alone were enough to know it was a really good song. It’s inevitable now to hear these songs and not associate them with memories of those people who are no longer with us.
At some point in our lives, we stop being dreamers and instead watch our dreams pass us by. We make plans with an eye toward a life without end, but we forget that only the earth and the sky have overcome the barrier of longevity. We may become the greatest thing in the world and then realize that we are simply a tiny drop of water in an immense sea that never stops growing. These and other ideas are conveyed in a song that lasts only a few minutes—enough, it seems, to reveal the truth to us: we are like dust that comes and goes just as quickly. Many people never live to enjoy a life that reaches 50 years, yet here we have a song that has endured for nearly as long and remains intact and relevant with its profound message.
One last detail I’d like to mention about this song is the line that goes, “and all your money won’t buy another minute.” We spend our whole lives as if money could add more time to our existence, until we realize there’s no benefit whatsoever in that kind of behavior. Many of us would be willing to sacrifice time and effort to have a great deal of money, but the sad thing is that such a pursuit can only reward us with something as fleeting and ephemeral as dust itself. “Dust in the Wind” is a song that speaks to the way we make the most of and value our lives before they turn into a handful of dust carried away by time.
Thank you for taking the time to read this post.
See you soon.
