[Music] My take on "Me cuesta tanto olvidarte" // Mecano [Eng-Esp]

Today is “oldies” day in Spanish, and boy, for this journey, the variety and quality go way beyond mere musical delight. Before I know it, I’m listening to songs by Laura Pausini, Karina, and others from that golden age, and I come across a song that’s always been one of my favorites: “Me cuesta tanto olvidarte” by the group Mecano. This beautiful acoustic ballad was first released in the mid-’80s, a time when I was just a kid who’d been drawn to this kind of music from a very young age. That’s the advantage of growing up around adults who love good music.

This song has two main elements that make it a true classic: a balance between time and quality that blends perfectly. With this song, I realize that time practically stands still when you listen to it; instead, it flows from the purest of feelings. It lasts just a few seconds—not even three minutes—but boy, every second is worth it. So much can be said with just a few phrases, but this song feels like an enigmatic message that tries to explain the kind of departure that also hurts—and that we rarely talk about. We’re used to talking about and listening to songs that deal with goodbyes caused by unrequited love or betrayal, but it’s hard to find songs like this one where the person who’s leaving admits that it isn’t easy and that it’s going to be hard for them to get over it.

Seeing this group perform live must have been one of those experiences that become a gem in time. One such gem—to name one of my favorites—was when they sang at the opening event of Viña del Mar. After an interactive performance, everything seemed to indicate that the show was over, but the audience “demanded”—through cheers and applause—that it end on a high note, and Ana treated us to a performance of the kind that touches the very depths of every spectator’s heart. I have no doubt that it was a memorable night for that audience, who had the good fortune to see the band Mecano at the height of their career.

When you feel connected to a song’s lyrics, that’s when you realize it’s not just any song. This happens to me with certain specific songs where you feel the emotions and sing along at the same time, in perfect harmony. In my case, I don’t have anyone I “find hard to forget,” or anyone I “swore to that there won’t be a second chance,” but I understand the message perfectly, and that’s something that never fails to feel special every time I listen to this song. The song feels like a riddle that only the heart can decipher—it’s hard for me to grasp that one part of the song says something like “forgetting fifteen thousand charms is a very sensible thing to do.”

How could I describe this topic? As a mystery to the hearts of those who leave without denying that they still feel and love. Because there are those stories in which feelings and reason go their separate ways while the heart looks in both directions. You can never speak ill of someone when you truly love them, and so it’s better to accept that sometimes “it’s so hard to forget.”
