I have wanted for some time to review this beautiful novel by Gabo (Gabriel García Márquez)—the story that portrays the lives and love of Florentino Ariza and Fermina Daza. Theirs was a love that was practically forbidden, as Fermina’s father—disapproving of the relationship—separated them and forced the young woman to marry a renowned doctor, Juvenal Urbino, who offered her financial stability and social standing. Yet, Florentino never gave up on that love; he kept it alive for more than fifty years, until, following Juvenal’s death, the two lovers were finally able to be together.
Hace un tiempo que y quería reseñar esta preciosa novela del Gabo (Gabriel Gracia Márquez) la novela que retrata la vida y el amor de Florentino Ariza y Fermina Daza, este amor es prácticamente prohibido pues el padre de Fermina los separó y no estaba de acuerdo con la relación, obligando a la muchacha a casarse con un médico de renombre (Juvenal Urbina) el cuál le ofrecía estabilidad económica y orden social, sin embargo Florentino no desistió de ese amor y lo mantuvo vivo por más de cincuenta años, cuando, tras la muerte de Juvenal, ambos amantes finalmente pueden estar juntos.
In this novel, love is portrayed in its various stages: romantic, youthful love; passionate love—impulsive and knowing no bounds; and finally, the tranquil love found in the companionship of old age—at least on Fermina Daza's part, whereas Florentino remained more passionate, impulsive, and far more idealistic.
En esta novela el amor se muestra en sus distintas etapas, el amor romántico y juvenil, el pasional que no conoce medidas y es impulsivo y finalmente ese amor tranquilo que haya complicidad en la vejez, al menos por parte de Fermina Daza, Florentino por su parte era más pasional e impulsivo, mucho más idealista
However, one of the novel's most beautiful premises is that—even as time passes, places and people change, and our own bodies alter (weakening with age)—true love remains intact or can even grow stronger, especially after enduring hardships like those this couple experienced.
Sin embargo una de las premisas más hermosas de la novela es que a pesar de que el tiempo pasa, los lugares cambian, y las personas también, a pesar de que nuestros propios cuerpos cambian (se debilitan con la vejez) cuando el amor es verdadero este permanece intacto o de hecho puede fortalecerse aún más, en especial luego de haber pasado dificultades, como todas las que pasó esta pareja.
It is quite striking that during the "exploration" or "quest" Florentino Ariza undertakes before his final reunion with Fermina, he is involved with many women—including one who is little more than a child. Yet, such relationships are a common theme in García Márquez's novels; the one that surprised me the most was the relationship between Aureliano Buendía and Remedios Moscote in *One Hundred Years of Solitude*, though it was actually quite common for the era (the 19th century).
Algo que llama bastante la atención es que en esa "exploración" o "búsqueda" que tiene Florentino Ariza ante de su reencuentro definitivo con Fermina, él está con muchas mujeres y una de ellas es casi una niña, pero es bastante común en las novelas de García Márquez leer sobre este tipo de relaciones en sus personajes, en especial, la que más me sorprendió fue la relación entre Aureliano Buendía y Remedios Moscote, en Cien Años de Soledad, sin embargo era algo incluso común en aquellos años (el siglo XIX)
And well, another element we can find in this novel is a strong critique of the social conventions of Caribbean society at that time; in fact, the novel is, to some extent, the story of the author's own parents, for they too fell victim to the prejudices of their era—which sought to keep them apart—yet their love proved more resilient and steadfast.
Y bueno, otra cosa que creo que podemos hallar en esta novela es una fuerte crítica a los convencionalismos de la sociedad caribeña en aquellos años y en aquella época, de hecho esta novela es un tanto la historia de los padres del propio autor, pues ellos también fueron victimas de los prejuicios de su tiempo e intentaron separarlos, sin embargo su amor fue más resistente y obstinado.
I invite you to read this beautiful story because it is truly full of deep emotion and is one of Gabriel García Márquez's loveliest works.
