I recently read a novel that really hooked me: *The Murmur of Bees* by Sofía Segovia. It tells the story of a newborn boy abandoned due to a facial deformity (a cleft lip); Nana Reja found him under a bridge, completely covered by a mantle of bees. Surprisingly—at least to the reader—the bees did not harm him but instead protected him, a hallmark of magical realism. The Morales family adopted him, naming him Simonopio, and he used his ability to connect and communicate with the bees to protect his loved ones—all set against the backdrop of the dawn of the Mexican Revolution. As Simonopio grew up, a rivalry emerged between him and Espiricueta, a resentful and treacherous farmhand on the estate.
Últimamente leí una novela que me enganchó, es de Sofía Segovia y se llama "El Murmullo de las abejas" se trata de un niño recién nacido que fue abandonado por causa de su deformidad facial (labio leporino) la Nana Reja lo encontró debajo de un puente y estaba completamente cubierto por un manto de abejas pero lo sorprendente (al menos para el lector) es que las abejas no le hacían daño sino que lo protegían, algo muy propio del realismo mágico, la familia Morales lo adopta llamándolo Simonopio pero usa sus habilidades de conexión y comunicación con las abejas para proteger a los suyos, y todo esto ocurre en los albores de la revolución mexicana. Simonopio crece y pronto surge una rivalidad entre él y Espiricueta (un peón de la hacienda) este último es rencoroso y traicionero.
This novel is incredibly sensory, featuring descriptions that make the reading experience deeply immersive—scents, sensations, and sounds such as the fragrance of orange blossoms or wet earth, and above all, the constant buzzing of bees. Magical realism stands out in particular: those fantastic, mythical, and almost dreamlike events that somehow intertwine with real, historical occurrences. This makes for a fascinating read, as the absurd somehow becomes part of everyday life. How can bees cover a newborn without harming him?
Esta novela es increíblemente sensorial pues destacan descripciones que hacen que la experiencia de lectura sea muy inmersiva: olores, sensaciones y sonidos como por ejemplo olor a flores de azahar o a tierra mojada y sobre todo el zumbido constante de las abejas, sobre todo destaca el realismo mágico, esos hechos fantásticos, míticos y casi oníricos que de alguna manera se entrelazan con los hechos reales e históricos, esto hace que sea muy interesante de leer porque lo absurdo de alguna manera se vuelve cotidiano.. ¿Cómo pueden las abejas cubrir a un recién nacido sin hacerle daño?.
In a way, Simonopio represents the less fortunate segment of the population—those marginalized and rejected by society—yet he possesses an immense power that the others lack. It is this power that makes him special and drives him to protect his family to the point of becoming indispensable; he embodies light and spiritual wisdom, whereas Espiricueta represents darkness. As for the bees, I believe they symbolize protection as well as teamwork, unity, and community—a metaphor for how society ought to be: inclusive, non-judgmental, and mutually supportive.
Simonopio representa de alguna manera al sector menos favorecido de la población, a los marginados y rechazados por la sociedad, sin embargo tiene un enorme poder que todos ellos no, y ese poder es el que lo hace especial y protector con su familia hasta el punto de volverse imprescindible, el es la luz, la sabiduría espiritual mientras que Espiricueta es la oscuridad. Las abejas por su parte yo creo que son una representación de protección pero también de trabajo en equipo, de unión y comunidad, una metáfora de como debería ser la sociedad en realidad, sin excluir a nadie, sin juzgar, apoyándose los unos a los otros.
