Liquid Courage Reunion

IMG_2817.jpeg

(Edit: meant to post under Silver Bloggers Community. Apologies.)

Got a little hammered yesterday evening. Well, let me rewind some. Started the day off going to breakfast with my old Marine vet friend Rick. After a greasy breakfast at Waffle House we dropped some Toys for Tots collection boxes off at a few businesses. Yep, it's that time of year again.

Anyway, after dropping me at home, did a little piddling in the garage. After which took a couple hour nap. It's after this nap that things went off the rails a little. But kind of in a good way.

The beers just started going down too easy. I started loosening up my fingers and dial pad. Next thing you know I'm contacting old Marine comrades that I haven't communicated with in a long time. It really lifted my spirits.

Started reliving old times and talking about them with the wife as I texted and messaged back and forth. Even had a call with one. Then I got added to a text group of one of my old platoons and linked up with more I hadn't been in contact with in a long while. What an evening and night.

Sometimes it takes a few beers to break down those walls. The ones that keep you from reaching out. The ones that make you think too much about what to say or whether they even remember you. Turns out they do remember. And they're glad to hear from you too.

We all get busy. We all let time slip by. We tell ourselves we'll reach out later. Then later becomes years. Don't wait. Pick up the phone. Send the text. Even if it takes a little liquid courage to get you started.

Hoping to keep up the momentum. Not sure what the plan is today, but reaching out to more is part of it. While sober this time.

When's the last time you reached out to someone you'd lost touch with?

  • Last time I had some of that liquid courage, I ended up (very briefly) escaping from the Louisville jail. I retired after that, didn't want to find out what else I could do with enough courage. One of your posts a couple months ago reminded me of a friend I hadn't heard from in a while, he'd gotten blown up a few times in Iraq and struggled with TBI and PTSD and didn't seem to be doing too good the last few times I'd seen him. We'd lost touch, but your post got me to track him down. Unfortunately, he's doing a five year bid in E-town for a little fleeing and evading, been 'fixin to' write him ever since, thanks for the reminder.

I have found that reaching out to people I lost touch with doesn't usually result in very much. Just a rather uncomfortable list of what we have been up to. This is more futile in my situation than other people though because I live 12,000 miles away from all the people I know from way back when.

  • That looks like a very good dutch beer. Having too much liquid courage got my kidneys rejected for the black market. I'm just kidding! I'm actually drinking less these days.

Ah...you just reminded me to engage as much as i can despite being busy. We'll never have any free time, so we might as well make time to check on people. It's nice to actually catch up, it really feels good.. and I'm glad you're having a good time, Joe.

Glad you did that. Luckily, I'm pretty good at staying in touch with people that matter in my now. It's fun to connect with the past from time to time, but besides one good friend, it just doesn't fit daily schedules.

I don't reach out. I'm always available, but I don't reach out. People know that, and I hope they don't resent it. It's just my personality. So...last week I thought about my brother and sister-in-law. Both not doing very well. I sat down, looked through my pictures and found two quite sentimental photos. I purchased a customizable card on Amazon, uploaded an appropriate photo for each and wrote something sincere. Those cards cost me $17, each. Plus a lot of work. It's easy for me to do that. But I won't call them.

According to Amazon tracking, the cards arrived on Tuesday, this week. Interesting that you and I are reaching out, in our own ways, to those we care about.

I'm glad you enjoyed your telephonic and in-person reunions.

I love it! I'm glad you got to reconnect with your old platoon!

I'll bet that lifted their spirits quite a bit as well! 😁

It's definitely interesting how things can be lubricated a bit with liquid courage!
