[TV] East of Eden (2026) Chapter 1: Brothers

Chapter 1: Brothers

I decided to watch this series, intrigued by a review from user @jcrodriguez. One particular phrase about a character struck me deeply: "a woman who didn't even love her own children." That statement resonated in my mind, leaving me with a burning question: How is that possible? What kind of mother doesn't love her own children? To avoid spoiling the experience, I tried not to look up too many details beforehand, as the premise had already completely captivated me.

The story is based on John Steinbeck's celebrated novel. This adaptation, titled East of Eden, is a miniseries adapted by Zoe Kazan and directed by Garth Davis alongside Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre. Released in 2026, it features a stellar cast led by Florence Pugh (as the enigmatic Cathy Ames), Christopher Abbott (as Adam Trask), and Mike Faist (as Charles Trask).

From the very first minute, the opening is deeply unsettling. A female voice narrates the beginning of the plot, using words that resonate powerfully and with chilling logic. Her arguments revolve around the origins of evil, attempting to define it or make sense of what she herself perceives as evil. It is a disturbing introduction that gradually draws us into the dense universe about to unfold.

In this first chapter, we meet Adam and Charles Trask, two young men growing up together as brothers under the shadow of Cyrus—an abusive father who rigidly trains them for military life and shows a marked preference for Adam. Upon reaching adolescence, their father decides to send Adam into the army, leaving Charles in charge of the farm; a decision Charles silently resents, though he remains subdued by the fear he holds for his parent. Feeling rejected by his brother, Adam chooses to remain in the army for years. It is not until the war ends that he receives a letter from Charles asking him to return, allowing the two to finally reunite, make peace, and restore their family bond.

However, fate would soon pit them against each other once more. This time, the catalyst would be Cathy Ames, a woman who bursts into their lives in a chilling manner, changing everything. To my mind, Cathy arrives just as ill omens appear to the wretched: as the embodiment of evil hidden behind the face of a beautiful woman with an angelic appearance, destined from the very first moment to bring about their ruin. image.pngsource

I’ve finished watching it now; it’s one of those series you can't stop watching until you've seen the whole thing. However, I’m going to write a review for each episode because it’s honestly worth it, and it also helps me learn a bit more about the characters' psychology—which I’ll then share with you all. I highly recommend it.
