I'm still working through the issues that have popped up after leaving the car sitting for three months. A few days ago, I shared how I worked on the brake system. This time around, I had to deal with one of the power window regulators—specifically on the front passenger side. Since the window hadn't been rolled up or down for so many days, it got completely stuck, to the point where the motor couldn't even budge it.
I started by pulling off the door panel—something I’ve done plenty of times on this car, so I practically know it by heart. I’ve actually documented the process here in the community on how to fix the door handles and other parts, hoping that knowledge might help someone else out. I’ve had issues with the window regulator before, but back then it was the internal motor gear. Since it’s made of plastic, the teeth just wear down over years of use.
To my surprise, this time it wasn't the gear at all—it was the cable, which had never happened to me before. Somehow, it stretched out and popped off the pulleys. That caused it to bind and tangle around the main drive pulley connected to the motor. As a result, the cable got completely kinked and deformed, and since it’s made of braided steel wire, bending it back to its original shape is practically impossible.
Even so, I did my best to straighten it out so it would fit back into the central pulley attached to the motor. As you can see in the photo, right near the end stop, a few of the wire strands snapped, which is a clear sign that it’s time for a full replacement. But for now, just to be able to roll the window up and down while I source a new cable, I managed to get it seated like this.
That wasn't the only damage caused when the cable derailed, though. One end of the cable sheath—the tapered tip that seats into the track guide that slides up and down with the glass—snapped off. When the motor pulls the cable, it now slips inside the track and rubs against the pulley, bogging down the whole system. On top of that, all that friction generated enough heat to melt a small section of the pulley itself.
For the time being, I managed to reassemble everything. I can roll the window up and down if I guide the glass by hand so the motor doesn't strain. If I don't, the current draw spikes and it blows the fuse. Doing this bought me some time to hunt down a new assembly, but the seller swore the power window regulator fits three Chery models: the X1, the A18, and the S12 (which is what I drive). Turned out they were wrong—they're not identical. So my best bet now is to have the original unit rebuilt by replacing the cable and broken parts, but I haven't tracked down a shop that does that kind of work yet. Once I get it sorted out, I'll post an update.
