[TV] Last Seen First Impressions

I decided to give Apple TV's new series Last Seen a shot. As a massive fan of investigative crime thrillers, this one looked like it had a lot of promise. It’s structured as a tight six-episode miniseries, with the finale slated to air next week on October 7th. Since my watchlist is pretty packed right now, I'll be splitting my review into two posts: my initial impressions of the pilot, and a full wrap-up after the season finale.

My first impression of Last Seen was definitely intriguing. It leans into a slow-burn opening, but it does a great job laying down the crucial exposition needed to drive the plot forward. The narrative centers on Ian Ridley (Patrick Brammall), a former detective who is now manning an emergency dispatch center. His marriage has fallen apart, and he's currently six months sober—all collateral damage from the loss of his daughter 11 years ago, who was presumed abducted and murdered.

In the aftermath of a severe storm, a dog walker stumbles upon a child's skeletal remains, unearthed by the eroding floodwaters. Spooked, he flees the scene, leaving a group of teenagers to discover the body days later and tip off the authorities. When Ian visits the crime scene, he spots canine tracks. After doing some digging, he tracks down the man, only to discover one of his dogs with a scrap of the very pajamas his daughter was wearing the day she was taken.

Laying the crime out right from the get-go is a solid hook—it definitely keeps you invested. Just a couple of episodes in, the narrative pulls a massive bait-and-switch, pivoting from a standard murder mystery to an active kidnapping investigation. I’m enjoying how the arc is unfolding so far, though I feel they could have dialed up the suspense to give it a bit more punch. With only a six-episode runtime, dropping a reveal of this magnitude might have landed better as a penultimate episode cliffhanger, saving the big payoff for the finale.

The latest episode left off on a high-stakes cliffhanger in the middle of an action sequence—only the second real set piece the show has delivered so far. So, if you’re tuning in for a high-octane procedural packed with car chases and relentless thrills, this one isn’t for you. However, if you appreciate a meticulous, step-by-step investigation where deeply flawed characters try to piece together a grim puzzle, you’ll likely enjoy the ride. I’ll be back next week to drop my final verdict once the credits roll on the finale.
