I lost count of how many times I started watching Severance and dropped it because I got caught up in something "more exciting." Truth is, I couldn't get past the first two episodes. I liked what I was seeing and appreciated the premise, but the pacing felt a bit slow, so I never really pushed through. I finally decided to sit down and finish the first season, and man, I was blown away by how good it actually is.

No sé cuentas veces comencé a ver Severance y no la continuaba porque me enganchaba con algo "más emocionante". Lo cierto que es no pasaba de 2 episodios, me gustaba lo que veía y su premisa, pero le sentía algo lenta y por eso no terminaba de avanzar. Así que finalmente decidí completar la primera temporada y y he quedado impresionado con lo buena que es.

Honestly, I don't fully regret not finishing it back in 2022. Having to wait three full years for Season 2 would have driven me absolutely insane. That's because the Season 1 finale drops one of the single best cliffhangers I've seen in a long time. What impressed me most about the show as a whole is its dynamic pacing—it brilliantly transitions from a slow-burn opening four episodes into a relentless, twist-filled second half.

Sin embargo no lamento del todo no haberla terminado en 2022, porque esperar 3 años para tener la segunda temporada me hubiera decepcionado y desesperado muchísimo. Eso se debe a que el final de la primera temporada, el último episodio tiene uno de los mejores cliffhanger que he visto en bastante tiempo. Eso es lo que más me impresionó de la serie en general, sus cambios de ritmo son muy buenos, pasamos de 4 primeros episodios lentos, a 4 más con giros y ritmos más acelerados.

I was thinking about what genre Severance fits into, and it's definitely a sci-fi psychological thriller. While the plot seems character-driven on the surface, the true core is what's going on inside Lumon Industries—a bizarre, mysterious corporation that subjects its employees to a surgical procedure, inserting a chip into their brains to radically separate their personal memories from their work memories. This way, the work self (the "Innie") knows nothing about the outside self (the "Outie"), leaving them with zero context for the strange, monotonous tasks they perform during their shift.

Pensaban dentro de que genero encaja Severance, y definitivamente es un thriller psicológico de ciencia ficción. Aunque la trama parece concentrarse en sus personajes, creo que el eje central es lo que ocurre en Industrias Lumon, una corporación misteriosa y extraña que somete a sus trabajadores, a un procedimiento quirúrgico, introduciendo un dispositivo en sus cerebros, para separar radicalmente sus recuerdos personales de los laborales. De esta manera el "yo" de la oficina o intus, no sabe nada del "yo" de afuera o exus, así que no tiene idea de las extrañas y monótonas tareas que realiza durante su jornada laboral.

The show leans heavily into minimalism. Most of the scenes take place in cramped rooms and endless, stark hallways to build a claustrophobic atmosphere—something I personally love, because it frees the creators from relying on flashy sets and puts all the weight on the narrative and writing. Over time, I’ve realized that some of the best stories use this exact framework. On top of that, you get a sharp, dystopian satire on corporate life and how soul-crushing it can be—to the point where you'd do anything to escape it.

Está serie apuesta por lo minimalista, la mayoría de las escenas son en pasillos y cuartos estrechos, para generar una atmósfera claustrofobica, que personalmente me encanta, porque permite a los creadores no enfocarse tanto en el escenario y dar más peso a la narrativa y guión, con el tiempo he descubierto que las mejores historias suelen tener este formato. Además a esto le sumamos la sátira distopica sobre la vida corporativa y lo pesada que puede ser, así que quieres evadirla a toda costa.

Around the same time, Helly Riggs (Britt Lower) arrives as Petey’s replacement, fiercely rebelling against the captivity of her new job.

Speaking of that finale: it delivers one of the absolute best cliffhangers I've ever seen. The episode, titled "The We We Are," is a masterpiece in suspense, utilizing a real-time countdown effect to perfection. Back at the office, the team hatches a plan to trigger their Innies in the outside world. It’s Dylan (Zach Cherry)—who easily became my favorite character—who sneaks into the control room to hold down two switches required for the "Overtime Contingency" protocol. His three teammates awaken on the outside, sparking a thrilling, simultaneous climax where they uncover truths that are mind-blowing for us as viewers, yet deeply disturbing for them.

Dicho final les decía, cuenta con una de los mejores cliffhanger que he visto. El episodio final llamado The We We Are, es una obra maestra de la tensión televisiva usando el recurso de la cuenta regresiva. En la oficina se pone en marcha un plan para activar a sus yo de la oficina en el mundo exterior. Es Dylan (Zach Cherry) mi personaje favorito, quien se infiltra en el control de las mentes, para mantener dos interruptores activos del protocolo que se conoce como Overtime Contingency. Sus tres compañeros despiertan afuera, dando pie a un climax simultáneo donde descubre verdades geniales para nosotros pero a la vez perturbadoras.

The performances across the board are unforgettable, especially given the challenge of playing two distinct personalities while making sure the audience can instantly tell them apart. Patricia Arquette as Ms. Cobel and Britt Lower as Helly nail this balancing act brilliantly. Tramell Tillman as supervisor Milchick is another standout whose performance grows on you exponentially. He doesn't have the Innie/Outie split like the others, but he has to maintain meticulous control over the floor to ensure no outside details spill in.

Las actuaciones de todos los personajes son memorables, especialmente porque deben representar dos personalidades y que el espectador logre diferenciar una de la otra. Esto para mí lo logran de maravilla Patricia Arquette con su personaje de La Sra. Cobel y Britt Lower con Helly. Tambien es muy bueno el personaje del supervisor Milchick por Tramell Tillman que va de menos a más, no tiene la separación como los demás con un intus y exus, pero debe sostener una atención al detalle dentro de la oficina para no revelar nada del exterior.

The rest of the cast is equally fantastic. Overall, the series has it all: a fiercely original storyline, razor-sharp writing blending satire and drama, and a constant sense of suspense as you itch to uncover what's hiding behind Lumon's corporate facade. It’s an absolute must-watch for anyone who considers themselves a cinephile or TV buff.

Todos los demás lo hacen igualmente genial, y la serie en general lo tiene todo, buena historia la cual es es bastante original, un buen guión lleno de sátira y drama, sumado al suspenso constante de querer saber que se oculta tras esa fachada corporativa de Lumon. Definitivamente es una serie que recomiendo ver a todo el que se considere cinéfilo.
