I know I'm a bit late to the Pluribus party, but free time is hard to come by and there's just so much content to get through. I honestly don't have an excuse; I just got distracted by other things despite the massive hype I had for it when it premiered. I'm a huge fan of Vince Gilligan's work on Breaking Bad, and I love that Rhea Seehorn is the lead. I've been really looking forward to this series because I'm a big The X-Files fan and love Gilligan's work as a writer, producer, and director—and I get the distinct impression this show has a bit of that style to it.
So far, I've only watched the pilot episode, which kicks off with the mystery of a global hive mind triggered by an extraterrestrial signal and a lab experiment. Individuality vanishes, and only 13 people are left unaffected. One of them is the author Carol Sturka, a bitter, short-tempered woman who actually detests her own books. Throughout the episode, Carol witnesses society collapsing and discovers that everyone is now united as one. While they're completely incapable of harming her, they desperately want her to integrate with them peacefully.
I could spot Gilligan's DNA everywhere right away—fittingly enough, the alien virus that alters humanity does so right down to the genetic level. You can't miss that signature slow-burn style either, with dialogue-free scenes of meticulous routines building up a sequence piece by piece. Watching Carol checking trembling people in a bar, only to go outside and do whatever it takes to try and save her partner, right up until the moment she realizes everyone has changed—that was classic Breaking Bad. Entire episodes would unfold around a single methodical activity, serving as part of a larger whole to give the plot more depth.
Carol is brilliantly played by Rhea Seehorn. I finally understand why she won that Emmy she so richly deserved. The logline for the show says humanity has to be saved by the most despicable person possible, and that's precisely what we get. The character rubs you the wrong way almost immediately, which speaks volumes about the performance because it totally nails the goal.
It's not entirely clear yet, but it feels like the core theme is going to be a choice between being part of a collective versus living as a fully independent individual. It's way too early to call it, but you can already sense a subtle critique of how human beings sometimes act exactly like everyone else anyway, completely stripping away their own personalities. I'll have to see how it all plays out, but so far, I'm really digging what I've seen.
