Today is Saturday, and after many busy days, I finally had time to visit our garden.
I honestly missed it.
For the past few days, I have been busy with different responsibilities. In farm, Church and in School activities of my daughter. I was not able to properly check our plants, give them enough attention, or even walk around the garden to see how they were doing. That is one of the challenges of having a garden while also managing many things at home. Sometimes, no matter how much I want to take care of the plants, I simply run out of time.
My husband is a farmer and a gardener, so farming and gardening are already part of our everyday life. As for me, I enjoy planting simple and useful vegetables in our backyard. I may not be able to take care of them every day, but I always feel happy whenever I see something growing.
Today, I was surprised to see that our lettuce was already ready to harvest.
Our lettuce has been one of the vegetables that gives us a lot of joy because we already have many orders for it. It feels good to know that the vegetables we grow in our own backyard are also appreciated by other people.
But honestly, we are still struggling with consistency.
There are times when we are so busy that we cannot maintain the garden as much as we want. Sometimes, when I finally get the chance to check our lettuce, some of them are already flowering. And you know what? The flowers are actually so cute!
Instead of feeling disappointed, I just smile and appreciate them. Gardening has taught me that not everything will happen exactly when we want it to. Sometimes, we miss the perfect time to harvest, but there is still beauty in every stage of the plant.
We also have string beans, cucumbers, and pechay growing in our garden. These are some of the vegetables I love because they are simple to grow and can be harvested within a short time, sometimes in just a couple of months.
We also have saluyot growing beside our rice field. I was the one who planted them. Unfortunately, I have not been able to clean the area for quite some time, so the grass around them is already very high. But seeing the saluyot still growing makes me happy.
And today, my favorite part was harvesting our lettuce and making our own fresh salad. There is something satisfying about preparing food from vegetables that I planted and watched grow. It may look like a simple salad, but for me, it represents time, patience, hard work, and the little effort I put into our garden.
Our garden is not always perfect. Sometimes it is messy, sometimes I forget to check it, and sometimes we lose a few plants.
But every harvest makes me why I keep planting.
We are not just growing vegetables. We are growing food for our family, creating a small source of income, and learning to appreciate the simple blessings around us. Today, I made a fresh salad from our own lettuce.
