Rehabilitation or Punishment?: The Lot Of Offenders

There is a reason why some people prefer jungle justice; tackling issues there and there, and according to the weight of the crime.

They are aware that once the appropriate authorities step in, the justice they seek might not be what they will get.

There is one bitter fact that most people don't like to admit: once someone succeeds to offend you or the society, the only thing that can be done is to punish the person, but even if you take that person's life, what the person has done can not be undone.

My father used to tell me something: “It's not as if people who see trouble coming and run away from it are not strong; they are only acting based on wisdom because if they should confront that trouble and end up being victims, the best they will receive at the end of the day is “sorry.”

And if it happens to take your life, then you just become another story for people to talk about.”

I don't know why I am starting this way, but if it lies within our power to escape getting hurt or cheated by people, we should not hesitate to grab the opportunity, even if we feel strong enough to defend ourselves or retaliate.

The best the government can do is arrest the person who hurts you, but the damage the person will cause you can never be made right again. Why face the damage then, if it's something you can avoid?

It is a sad reality that there is nothing anyone can do to go back in time to change what has happened. Since I was born to date, I have never seen such a miracle occur.

Punishments are good and sometimes make people realize their shortcomings, but it doesn't always solve the problem.

I am not saying this to side with offenders, but what will brutal punishment change at the end of the day, seeing that the person has already done the deed?

The majority of people think that taking offenders to jail/prison is not enough punishment, as most of them don't receive the kind of punishment expected for the kind of offense they committed, but that is obviously coming from emotions.

Except you just want to kill the perpetrator due to the pain they have caused you, separating someone from society, from their dreams, family, and life is one of the worst things that can ever happen to anyone.

I have seen the condition of some Nigerian prisons, and honestly, I don't pray for anyone to find themselves there.

There are certain crimes that people commit that I feel like their lives should just be taken from them, or they should be given a permanent injury, but come on, will even that still heal you from what the person has done?

The truth is, in prisons, perpetrators are not mostly treated with brutality as we may want. They don't get flogged or tortured unnecessarily.

They are just kept from society so that they can regain their sense of humanity and understand the weight of their offences.

You may think that's not enough for certain crimes, but imagine being shut in an unconducive environment for years and being compelled to do activities you never desire to do, daily.

It may not sound big, but that's the worst torture in life; just imagine someone with a life sentence, living under monitoring, no privacy, poor feeding, inmate bullying, and so on, for the rest of their lives. I mean, some people would wish to just die instead.

For a fact, those perpetrators deserve to be treated like the kind of hearts they carry, but it's not everything that violence can resolve; some of the terrible tortures in life don't even need physical contact.

I guarantee you that prisoners are both being rehabilitated and punished at the same time. Most people would not see it that way, but honestly, those guys are not enjoying life there.

The only problem I used to have is that most times, when they come out, they don't even genuinely repent; they commit crimes again, so I wonder if the rehab is truly solving the issue or making it worse.
